Metric means Metric Treads and Metric size spanners ..

Imperial is inches, like Manitowoc cranes, all treads and spanners are inches ..

So guess HD is mostly Imperial and some UK bikes ....

Then the rest of the world is Metric ...

EDIT:

History of the Metric system
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_metric_system

met·ric1
Origin

mid 19th century (as an adjective relating to length): from French métrique, from mètre (see meter1).

the unit of length, the metre, was based on the dimensions of the Earth

The US has adapted metric for its vehicles and Ma Vic is in line with that. H-D lags behind (what's new) with a mixed bag of SAE and metric. Interestingly, some things remain SAE, such as spark plugs.

metric is much simpler because everything is divisible by 10

I can remember learning the metric system in school even before high school and that was a long, long time ago for me. We also learned how to convert from metric to imperial .. some of which I still remember.
