Last week after returning from a long ride I had about 160 miles on the tripometer which I use to tell when to fill up.My 04 Kingpin was good to 120 miles before looking to fuel up, leaving fuel to spare. A couple of rides I took on my 2011 I was going 160 miles plus before gassing up. After the last trip I decided to see how many miles I could go before the low fuel light would come on. So I took a couple of short rides and I was still good at over 180 mi and went out today being sure the light would come on. Well about 10 minutes out and over 190 miles now on the tripometer I started thinking something wasn't right and not 2 minutes later the bike started to miss slightly and I knew. The friggin low fuel light never came on, though it does light up when the key is turned on. Anyway I turned around and kept swerving the bike which got me maybe a mile or so. Pulled of into a parking lot instead of getting stuck on the side of the road. Called my son who brought me some gas. Now I know I'm good to about 140 miles. Hmmm? It might have been a good idea to look in the owners manual for the tank capacity. But who knew the low fuel indicator would be faulty.:eek

I once ran out of gas and the trip odo showed 246 miles. And that was in some really twisty (switchbacks too) back roads using lower gears.

225 is my best on the Cross Country, I don't remember what the 2004 Vegas would do.

Kinda hard to tell which bike you're talking about that you went 190 miles before running out of usable gas but if it was the 2011 KP with the 4.5 gal tank of which around 4 gal is likely usable; you got 47 mpg.

I don't think that's too bad at all.

BTW; they don't call them "idiot lights" for nothing. They have never been all that reliable and certainly should not be depended on. I'm saying the lights are idiots; not the rider/driver. You're right to use the odometer. On my 04 KP I look for a gas station between 100 and 120 miles just because I know it's not good to run the gas low since it also keeps the pump cool. Especially on hot days.

Vegas my light comes on a bit over 200 kms (120 mile) got around 4 litres left.
If I ca accelerate hard and put the light out Ive got at least 2 litres left.
Vegas holds 17 litres.
XC is a different kettle of fish, supposed to hold 23 litres to the baffle, but if Im on the road and riding I can dribble another 2 litres in slowly.
XC light comes on closer to 300 kms but varies according to load, conditions, and my right hand (it's the biggest factor)
Once XC light comes on hard acceleration woint put it out so I guess Ive around 4 litres left.
I get between 14-18 kpl
All this probably means nothing to those still living with gallons and miles.
Use the trip, and dont run it dry too often.

My 2016 CCT gets about 150 miles per tank before the low fuel light comes on...this almost never varies. Loaded, unloaded, trunk, backrest, highway only, stop and go, 2-up, octance ratings, etc. She seems to be consistent across the board. The only big variance I get is during the winter with more warm-up time which makes it worse or on long trips where it gets a little better due to highway only between stops.

I am glad my fuel light comes on but I still start looking at about 140 either way.

If I'm steady cruising around 60-65 mph (100-110 kph) I usually get 315 km (196 mi) before my light comes on, on my 2013 XCT

Yes, I won't be running it that low again. The last fill up I put about 170 miles on her and the mileage came out to almost 49 mpg. That was going 50 to 55 mph in 6th gear most of the time. I'm wondering if that is too much mpg as they would say on the older bikes that over 45 mpg meant running too lean. I'm going to be installing a Dobeck fuel controller shortly in hopes that will even out my idle and recently I have noticed in 3rd and forth at a steady cruising speed a very slight surging. On my 04 I had this in 2nd gear which the addition of a controller cured. Isn't owning a bike fun. Doing work on the bike is almost as fun as riding it!

150 ish on the light for my CCT. I've pushed it to 200 before fueling. Not by choice I was not anywhere near a gas station. Oops. I tend to stop around 180 or so which is about 3 hours. Nice time for a break then back on for more.

Miles before it comes on doesn’t matter. Miles after it comes on is.
:grin Aint that the truth. My RSV we were on the road left Blue Ridge Ga heading east to Clayton/Dillard. Past the last opportunity for fuel it coughed. I flipped to reserve but the miles left to go were going to be more than I had made before on flat level ground 1 up. When I filled up I was .2 shy of what the manual said was max capacity. Yikes
So on the XCT on highway 2up with gear I usually go 2-2.5 hours and we are ready for a break. I figure about 160 miles, sometimes I'll bump that out and can usualy make about 180 miles before the light comes on.
