I have a chance to pick up a x roads with hard bags for a very good price. Is the older trans that big an issue that I'd be kicking myself. My other choice is an 11 Kingpin

No, it's not even an issue. But being the picky princesses that we are, some of us (including me) like to complain about anything and everything - too much gear noise, not enough exhaust noise, too much wind in my face, not enough wind in my armpits, etc.

My other choice is an 11 Kingpin.
They're two different animals. I have also considered both and since I take my wife along sometimes on longer trips, I went with the touring bike (XR). But if you ask me the Kingpin was the better looking bike of the two. I've now gotten so used to having the hard saddlebags, that I don't think I can ever go back to a cruiser without lockable bags.

In my opinion, the XR will be the better touring cruiser, and the Kinpin will be the better looking cruiser, even though both can tour and both are good looking.

If you're going to add after market stuff, there's more stuff available for the 'pin since it's been out longer - and less goodies are available for the cross bikes, since they're still relatively new models.

Test ride both and don't stress too much about it - one is the better fit for you, but neither bike is the wrong choice.

I purchased a 2010 XR the end of October after test riding the 2011's.

I rode the 2011 Kingpin last fall as well as a 2009 Demo Kingpin. I definitely could tell a difference in the transmission. I thought the 2011 shifter smoother. The Kingpin is also a lighter bike which is why I wanted the Kingpin.

With that being said, I went with the 2010 XR. My husband suggested I test ride a XR. Needless to say I took it home. I got a great deal and $1000 off accessories since I had rode the Demo ride. I don't know if they are offering the accessory deal now.

I didn't think the difference in the transmission was a big enough to let a good deal go by.

That is my other concern. My knees are shot - 1 rebuilt, one in need of a major overhaul. That's why I sold my ultra

Test ride them both and see what your knees have to say about each bike.

I have ridden both models in 2011. My local dealer doen't have a 10. The 2010 is 200 miles away. What I haven't done is ridden an 2010 or with a passenger.

dont forget about the extra 2000 miles between oil changes the 2011s get. I would go with the KP.
Just to be different - Go to a Vic Fuel-It demo deal and make a deal on a 2011 Cross Roads. I really like the XR but decided I wanted the radio, gauges, fairing, blah, blah, blah. You should be able to get one heck of a deal if you do your preparation and homework.thumb up

You should also be negotiating for 20%-30% off on anything bought at the dealer - written on your buying contract. I got 25% off for a year, great deal. (OEM trunk, saddlebag bars, iPod cables, heel-shifter, driver backrest, and heated grips) One guy I know got 30% off.

If you get the extended warranty - it costs the dealer $400. I got it for $440.

If I may; I'd like to answer your question with my humble opinion.

There's really only two fundamental differences between the 10 and the 11 motors. The whine the lower end makes (on the pre 11's) and the miles between oil changes. The rest of the differences are not that significant because the motor didn't change much but the transmission did to quiet the lower end down. So; armed with that knowledge you just need to decide what's more important to you. The ride of a Cross Roads (which is second to none in its class) or the light weight feel of the Kingpin which has lots of great compatible parts available these days.

Seriously; you really can't go wrong either way IMHO. Also; the 2500 mile oil change on the pre 2011 Vic's are a guideline. You can go much farther between oil changes on them; probably even 5k miles like the 2011-present because Victory was just being overly cautious and good on them for being so!

And just to add to the oil change interval discussion; the pre 11's might have had a louder lower end gear whine but didn't have the diagonal gears that make the 11's quieter but also didn't shear the oil molecules more -- so I'd feel more comfortable putting 5k miles between oil changes on the pre 11's than the 11-present. Again; JMHO.

As an addendum; I've "heard" through the rumor mill that the 2500 mile oil change interval written in the owners manual's were a misprint. You can do your own research to make that decision about whether you feel it's true or not.
