I recently took a peek at the light in the topcase on my XCT, by removing the three screws (3mm hex head) on the inside of the lid. After you do that, if you take a nylon pry bar (as you would to remove the headlight ring or the speaker grills), you can push the assembly toward the rear, and it sort of pops out of its one small tab (and doesn't go far, because it's tethered to the main wire).

The assembly seems to be a one-piece affair, attached to the sheathed wire that comes into the top of the trunk. At any rate, I didn't see any other screws to mess with.

I am (or maybe was) considering attaching some blinker/flasher/thingy leads in there, but I don't know what's what with the wires that show. A test probe was no help (I think the circuit board is clear-coated or something) and neither was the shop manual (nothing at all about the light).

So, anyone happened to have messed with that light and its wires, and, if so, care to share any words of wisdom?

BTW, I'll share this bit: those three screws are difficult to remove, but even harder to put back in. Very persnickety alignment issues.

Can't help you, but I'm subscribed to learn more. I think it would be great to add some LED strips into the main light body as extra signals. My buddy recently replaced the stock taillamp setup on his KTM sport bike with some great LED strips that would work well if there is a way to insert them into the light body and wire them up.

It is a sealed assembly and not cheap. Mine went out already.
Best advice, leave well enough alone. LED's can be finicky.

Texas: thanks for the info and the advice.

I have a followup question for you. The sheathed wire that goes into the trunk disappears inside the assembly. The other end merges into a bigger bundle of wires, just behind the passenger backrest pad, where it's taped around and around.

Did that trunk-light LED assembly that you had to replace include that sheathed wire bundle (I believe there are three wires inside of it, according to the shop manual) sticking out of the LED assembly, and if so how was the other end terminated, e.g., in a connector of some sort?

2 wires IIRC, could be 3 but my memory is getting sparse and I was very irritated at the time, they connect to the light under the trunk lid inside the rubber thingy that runs down the center. Simple locking insert.
Not sure how the wiring harness plays in to it. Had that changed at the same time. Seat was crushing it and all sorts of electrical "tricks" were happening over a few month period. A mess to track for the dealer, well, because they never looked, but that is another story.

Something that might interest you though, I have hyper lights mounted to the trunk support. Kind of out of the way. I wired them to the brake light in the cord that supplies the trunk. If you go under the seat you may be able to get to the turn signal wiring with a small LED. You are correct about it being a bear to get the crews lined back up, I thought I'd never get them started.

As a result of this recent thread on Hyper Lites -- http://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=83482 -- I got to thinking (again) that I should add something that flashes. And as a result of a post in this Back-Off thread -- http://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=83602 -- and what Mike/SgtFixit said, I decided to get this $45 flasher: http://www.customdynamics.com/victory_cross_country.htm#Metric/Universal_GEN2_Magic_Brake_Light_Flasher_ . It arrived yesterday evening, and since it will be raining for the next few days, that's my project for today.

After what you said, Tex, and looking at the bike, I'm going to tap into the trunk-feed sheath in back of the passenger backrest pad (where there's plenty of slack) -- cut open the sheath, tap the wires there, and see what happens.

Thanks for steering me away from the actual assembly, in terms of trying to get at the wires there.

I don't have any experience with the Back Off system, but the hyper lights are on the third bike, same set, and still going strong. About 12 years old right now. Had them on a Venture, then a Wing, and now the XCT. They are a bit pricey, I think I paid $75 for them back then, but I figure I have my money's worth out of them.
That is what I went with and what works for me, I like simple, but the Back off has a nice following as well. Hope they are what you were looking for and work well for you.
