Guys I'm at my wits end here and really need some solid advice, I realize its not a common problem as I haven't found much on the subject.

I bought this bike new from the dealer in 2016 , the dealer is 3 hours away , bought it and rode it home.

When I got it home I ordered the mods I wanted which included a 1" lowering link. I put the lowering link and everything seemed fine, did the belt adjustment ( although I wasn't aware of having to do an allignment ), when I rode once in a while I could smell rubber and always thought perhaps from my boot on the pipe.

While on a trip I have just recently been on realized the belt is riding inward on front pulley and I can see belt rub marks on the motor casing.

On the way home I stopped in at the dealer for an unrelated issue and asked the mechanic why it was intermediately rubbing and he had no idea and only took a grab of the belt to see if it was tight and basicly told me how he does the procedure.They had no time that day to do an allignment on my bike.

After spending a great amount of time I reading and downloading a good service manual with the more detailed procedure I have my belt tension adjusted and following the procedure I can have belt move on the rear pulley off either should so it basicly rides in centre, Problem is I can't get the belt on the front pulley to move outward so there's no chance of it rubbing on the motor casing. Even if I turn the left adjuster so the belt pretty much rides right on the right shoulder on the rear pulley that belt won't move.

Has anyone come across this issue before on the Cross Country bikes?

I don't know if me not doing the allignment when I added the lower link may have caused the belt to wear in one spot on the front pulley or what. Or if when I brought the bike home if they didn't set it up right, not trying to place blame , just need to get this resolved.

In the attachments it shows where the belt rides now before and after adjustment, the pic of the belt riding outward was while on the trip , and I would think if its riding outward on the rear that the front would have followed.

Please some help.

Some other thoughts not mentioned on the other forum:

1)Are you really sure that the belt makes contact with the inside engine case, because I just don't see the belt being able to do this. Take a shop mirror and look at the inside of the belt on the front pulley. My bet is that there is still some clearance between the belt and any hard contact points.

2) Looking at the front pulley, it looks as if the belt never ran to the outside since I see zero wear indication. This just might be the way this particular bikes works. I have the same wear indications, but my belt runs more toward the outside.

3) The only real adjustment relative to the belt is the rear tire alignment, which we talked about. However, the front pulley too affects belt tracking, but you can't adjust that. It's possible that there is some variability to the engine mounting points during frame welding, and if that front pulley is slightly canted to the left (because the engine is too), then your belt is going to run on the inside of that front pulley.

4) Simply align the rear wheel to the front and have proper belt tension....That is really the most you can do.

Edit: I looked at my bike again..using a mirror and flashlight to look at the inside area of the front pulley and belt. If my belt was riding on the inside area (which it isn't) then it would have even more clearance between the belt and the engine casing.

Agreed ... Just do the works ... And it will be better or even "fine"

Hi Spacecoast, yes definately was rubbing on the motor case and I did get down and see wear on the inside edge of the belt, and as you can see on the pulley definately belt never rode outward anymore than the color is showing. You have given more food for thought on the engine allignment, the only other thing that comes to mind is if the pulley is not quite seated but with the torque required as per specs I find it hard to beleive its not seated properly.
When I did check the tension it was pretty much spot on and no matter how far I send the belt riding on the rear pulley to the right , that belt on the front pulley won't move.
I'm thinking I may put the stock lower link back on just to take that out of the equation.
Is it possible I have an issue with the front pulley? Did the newer XCT's have front pulley issues of any sort?

Yes I have the procedure in front of me and Space was a tremendous help before I downloaded this manual putting it in simplist form.
You would think if rear was tracking right as far as it is then the front pulley would have to follow.

Is it possible I have an issue with the front pulley? Did the newer XCT's have front pulley issues of any sort?
Front pulley looks fine. I don't know about any pulley issues. I thought all the engines (106) were the same...and if so I don't see how there could be clearance issue. There is a ballpark amount of room between engine and front inner pulley on mine.

I go to the lower link switched and tension done, just have to do alignment now, how things change otherwise I will be making an appointment with the dealer.

With saddle bag off and rear wheel off ground. Sit on ground spin tire forward motion. Now look at belt moving or stopped is belt in straight line. That's the most important part. Now with belt in straight line adjust the belt so its on the center or right edge of the rear pulley. That should put belt in the right spot on the front pulley. Check belt tension.
Remember when you rotate rear wheel forward it steers the belt when you roll the wheel backwards the front pulley steers the belt. There might be only a 32nd or a 16th of clearance between belt and motor.
Also look at the lugs on the inside of the front sprocket cover baybe the belt is rubbing on one of them

Thanks Visionjohnny did the entire procedure again with the stock lower link back on and belt is riding the way its suppose to on the rear and tension is good, still riding in the same spot on front pulley so will just leave it for now. Regulator just too a final **** which was the reason I originally stopped by the dealer for, regulator won't charge at idle and battery now dead. Will have to make a call and see if they will also send the battery to me along with the regulator under warranty.:frown

The bottom picture is what my belt looks like. More to the right. I has some pully chirp kinda noise after riding some chipseal road about 1/2 mile and some dirt during a big trip. I checked and thought I would try brushing the pulley and washing the belt off before doing procedure. It worked. shock was at 15psi too ? connected idk.


My big fear was that the rear pulley was one of the bad ones that eventually start pitting and flaking ...falling apart. Mine has a little evidence of that but nothing terrible yet. If it happens I will have it relined with those fiberglass teeth.
