So I finally found my Hammer (2007), picking her up Saturday. I'm going to drive 500 miles to get her, so I figured I would rent a cargo van to make this trip safer. I have never tried to load a bike into a cargo van before, so if you've done it, I'd appreciate some any tips. I will have bike straps and a truck motorcycle ramp. Thinking that should get the job done, just hope I don't run into any surprises or phuck something up.

Ride it home. Take lots of breaks so you don't get too tired, give yourself plenty of time, and enjoy the new bike. First 500 miles are a perfect time to bond with your new bike. Forget the van.

strap evenly front to back side to side, when it is strapped down the shocks will be pre loaded about half. The bike should not move. When you are done, try to violently move it by hand as to see if the bike will move like when you hit a bump or serve to avoid a car. If it does not then you should be all right. http://www.harborfreight.com/motorcycle-stand-wheel-chock-97841.html this is what you should have to transport it. So it does not move on you..

Cross: I really wanted to do that, but I have to make this trip back all in one day. I'm a little scared to get cought in a storm because I don't have any rain gear, besides a riding jacket with a liner in it. If i catch rain for the first 100 miles, the rest 400 are going to be beyond miserable. Sunday does look like clear weather though, so I guess I could fly there sunday and ride it back. Still an option I suppose... I admit, that would be pretty cool.

Gibson: Thanks for that link, I actually think one of my buds might have a contraption like that. I'll have to see if I can borrow it, good thing you mentioned it.


If I go the cargo van route, my main worry is the bike falling over and getting messed up. This puppy is mint! Would hate to ruin it on the ride home. I'll have to make sure to strap it down real good from all angles.

I guess I still have about 24 hours to decide how to go about this mission. :rolleyes:

The biker stores are open today,go buy some rain gear,and ride that bad boy home. Dirt washes off,but the smile you'll have on your face won't!!!thumb up

Where are you picking it up? There may be some forum folks near that might be able to assist in a pinch.

With a 1000 mile round trip and only one day I would go for the van/trailer too. I've run a few iron butt rides and couldn't imagine doing one on a bike I didn't know well and absolutely trust. To boot, because of your schedule you will inevitably be doing some dawn/dusk night driving through some deer infested areas.

A few things I would add to the tie down suggestions:

1. You should use a wheel chock but be sure you have fender clearance for it. I haven't checked but you might be able to rent one from u-haul or a tool rental place
2. make sure the ramp has plenty of width to allow you to quickly and easily put your feet down. 1/2 way up the ramp is not the place to find out you should have got a wider ramp
3. Take some old towels along. Ramps and cargo beds can get slick when wet. Check your footing and wipe them dry if needed

You guys are really tempting me to ride it.. but i have exactly the same concerns as bart

Im so excited about getting this bike i coild barely sleep last night!

Well... must be my lucky day! Greyhound ran a $44 one way special new orleans to atlanta 9pm saturday to 8am sunday. Got my ticket! Ill sleep on the bus and have all of sunday to ride it back at my own leisure. Im pumped! How about that for a furst ride ever on a hammer ;)

That's awesome. You'll love the trip back. Just make sure you plan plenty of stops, stay hydrated, eat, rest... The key to safety is not pushing yourself, even though you will get tempted to do so.

Most bike shops also have soft tie down straps that hook across your handle bars. I got a set before I picked up my bike in Iowa and trailered it back to Wisconsin. And +1 on the wheel chock. Get good ratchet straps, and when you are strapping it down make sure to put weight on it as opposed to pulling it down with the ratchet.

I really do appreciate everyone's input. I'll be in for a long ride on Sunday. I know this is a little on a crazy side, but I actually have always wanted to do a really long ride to test myself, so this will surely be an interesting adventure. I know... there are quiet a few things that could go wrong, but the bike is mint, 1400 miles, just had an oil change and injectors flushed/cleaned. Supposedly runs like a champ! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!
