And boy was that fun.

Actually, the front tire was a very easy one to change except for one small problem, I don't have a 16 mm allen head to remove the front axle, nor does anyone else in Dayton.

I finally found a 3 pack of large allens in standard size at Autozone. As it turns out, 5/8" is just a wee bit smaller than 16 mm and works fine.

A separate trip I made to the auto store was to buy a 15 mm impact socket to loosen the shock bolt. While I was there I figured I might as well get a 1 1/16" version for the rear axle bolt. A 27 mm would do, but again, no one seems to stock them.

I had to make one final trip to the auto store to get a 13 mm deep well socket to adjust the tire alignment which wasn't very good as it's been since new from the factory.

It seems like I have picked up a gazillion tools over the years, but every time I get a different bike, it's a new boon for the tool industry. About the time I collect everything I need to diddle with it, I'll trade if for something that has a whole new set of fasteners.

Anyway, the Harbor Freight cheapie lift I bought worked fine, but I use standard floor jack as a support as there is a large overhang and the bike wiggles around a lot without the support jack. If I had to do this kinda thing more than once a year or so, I think I'd invest in a better jack, but this one will do okay for now.

I hear you on the tools but atleast it gives me an excuse to add to my collection! I've got to run to town today so I may look at adding a 1 1/16" to my collection. Was your back tire out of alignment pretty bad? My bike is wanting to go left on me when I let go of the bars and I am hoping that is the problem.

Having never done a tire change on my XR yet, I am curious as to why the shock bolt needs to be loosened or removed. Is that in order to drop the swing arm lower?

Thanks for posting the tools needed...that's a real time saver to have them at the ready. We owe you one for that.

Exactly. As I came to find out, there is a dog bone and the shock hanging vertically next to one another that both connect to the swingarm. I figured that I needed to take both out to drop the swingarm, but I was wrong. One only need detach one or the other. They are connected to some swinging linkage at the top that allows the swingarm to be dropped far enough with only one removed.

The rear wheel is a pretty big one man job. I had a buddy help me with it. It's hard to get the spacers and brake on and aligned and get the axle run back through it unless you're an octopus. Fortunately, the front tire is much easier to change.

And don't throw all the wheel spacers together unless you want to research which goes where. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks for posting the tools needed...that's a real time saver to have them at the ready. We owe you one for that.
You actually owe it to my predecessors here on the forum. I Googled and found the inch equivalent rear wheel nut and shock nut sizes listed in previous post on our forum. I'll take credit for the alignment socket and the inch equivalent conversion of the front axle removal tool though. ;)

It is very handy to have Google go out into the world and gather this stuff for us too, so I guess we should give them a shout out too. Hopefully, the OP will appear when the next guy goes tool hunting. cheers

Seemed like it was about a 1/2" out i.e. the distance from the axle center to the swingarm pivot center. I've let go of the handlebars long enough to fasten a jacket or adjust gloves and I never noticed any strong pull to either side. Then again, I do it pretty quick and I'm preoccupied with whatever I'm doing, so it's possible that I didn't notice.

Gap in spacer on front axle????

With 18,000 miles it was time for a new front tire on my 2011 XR. I never paid attention to this when I took off the tire but after installing it and torquing to specs, I saw that the spacer on the left side of the wheel was flush while the right side has a small gap. I looked in my repair manual and it looks like the longer spacer goes on the left side and that was how I installed it. After finding the gap I pulled the axle back out and made sure the threads on the axle were clean and again reinstalled with the same results. I looked at a buddy's 2012 Hardball and his also has a space on the right side but he's had his front tire fixed twice. While his has anti-lock brakes and mine doesn't, it doesn't appear that it should make a difference.

The photos are from the front of the bike.

Just seems like everything would be flush with the world but I'm just looking for a little feedback to see if I did this correct before I hit the road.

Did the front tire on my bro's bike ... same thing. Small gap on the side of the spacer. I wondered about it as well.

I changed the back tire on my XR and did not take anything loose on the back shock, didnt have any problem getting it off or on, but it is a two man job pretty much getting it back on especially.
