NOTE: Title of thread should say "last 1/4 of RELEASE"....sorry for the confusion.

I know I should probably know how to do this, but I really do consider myself a newbie.

When I pull my clutch, and let it out to engage, it seems that almost all of the function is in like the last 1/4 of the release. It seems like this has become more drastic over the last month or so.

I'm assuming this is adjustable with the cable, but not sure. And I THINK it's under the tank from what I've read here...but not sure. And I THINK it's because the cable has slipped or stretched...therefore it needs to be adjusted shorter....but not sure.

I can tell you that the last couple of times I rode it, I was coming out of second into third and the transmission grinded just a bit...but then slipped into gear. It's only done that twice now.

This is why I'm here...to pick the brains of you long-time riders.

Your cable might be getting close to breaking. Like the manual says lube the the clutch lever and cable end. That means spray some lube up in there. Once every month.
You can only adjust your cable when cold!!!!
Up at the lever grab the cable and see how far out of the housing you can pull it. The cable should only come out a 1/16th to a 1/8 inch any thing more then that its out of adjustment.
Follow the cable to the back of the bike and you'll find the adjuster. Now with two wrenches loosen the locking nut. Turn it enough to take the slack out. Go back and squeeze the clutch lever five or six times. Now pull the cable to see how much cable comes out.
If none of this does any good your clutch could be warn out.

NEVER adjust your cable if bike is warm or hot.

The clutch adjuster is beneath the tank, right side center. You'll have to remove the tank to get at it.

Also - check your clutch cable at the handlebar end - if it seems that the adjustment has changed noticeably over a short period of time, it could be that the cable end is getting ready to let go... The little barrel the clutch cable end goes into has sharp edges; these slowly rub against the cable, causing it to break. File / grind the edges down to a nice radius (round needle file works great, as does a Dremel with appropriate grinding point), and your cable will thank you.

I'd also suggest a "Save-ur-ride" emergency clutch cable kit to keep on hand - tuck it inside a side cover so it'll be there when/if you need it. (Also a screwdriver and a small adjustable wrench or an 8 mm and 10 mm wrenches.)

Took the tank off this morning. Checked the cables and adjusted as suggested. Still seems the same. Doesn't seem right. That's an awfully long pull on the clutch lever for it to only engage in the last 1/4. I suppose I'll have to get it checked out.
