be carefull with x country roads saddlebags because it is easy for the locking pins to twist loose while packing gear in and out. mine flew off on highway and destroyed the bag and contents.i got very lucky in rush hour traffic. victory does not admit or cover new bag under warranty.

Ouch. Sorry to hear you've had to go through that. About Victory admitting or cover new bag, you're dreaming. That's like saying your bike fell off a cliff and it no longer runs properly - please fix my bike.

I'm sure you're not happy with this happening, especially since a saddle bag is around a grand, but you're the guilty party here. You stuffed it too much :) - Thanks for sharing with us, and hopefully we all make sure to keep our saddlebags in place. cheers thumb up

B Bob so you know you can go to any hardware store and pick up those parts for around 5 bucks.

As far as the bag falling off it must of been something you did. Harley has used the same method for holding the bags on for the last 20 years. I have taken trips and put thousands of miles and never had one come loose. When you put the pin in make sure you turn it all the way tight. You can bump it to make it come loose it just doesn't work that way.

Gotta agree with visionjohnny here... I had an Ultra Classic with the same set up and there was one time my saddlebag was loose... it was because I did not turn it so it actually caught on the latch on the other side to secure it. My fault. But it did not come off because the other one was turned right and held it.. I can imagine how I would feel if I lost a saddlebag!

True. Kinda. The Brukus hardware is machined to fit correctly and much easier to use than the straight threaded bolts you would get at the hardware store. For the price the Brukus kit is best because it's also a keyed bolt that takes a special wrench that comes with the kit to tighten and loosen the bolts. This makes it an anti-theft product as well as a security product. This is even more important on the Pleather bags because they don't lock. On the hard bags a thief can reach behind the bag and undo the pins with a washer and just take the entire set of bags with them. Can't do that with the Brukus kit (or the $5 set of hardware)

Your call but for $35 I think it's worth it for all the reasons mentioned. I've had the pin type latches come loose on a 69 Shovel, 99' FLHT, and a 2000 FLHT. I don't trust them; especially as the get older and looser.

On my 11 XC I just use the Brukus bolts at the back side of the hard bags so no matter what I still have the anti-theft and security they offer and can use the stock pin to hold the bag in and up while I position the keeper for the Brukus bolt to go in. It's slightly more effort to use the Brukus hardware (or the $5 hardware) but well worth the peace of mind they provide IMHO.

If you know someone else with the same style saddlebags you can order another key and split the cost ($40).

BBob, I went into the Brukus site and one thing they didn't show is what the bolt fastens in to that makes their device more secure than OEM. Can you, or anyone, tell me?:confused:
It's a clip that goes in the same place as the clip on your bike now. The difference is that the hole is threaded rather than just a piece of spring steel wire for the stock pin to clip on to. The Brukus hardware uses threaded bolts that are machined down in the area where they go through rubber grommets of the saddlebag.

Looks like this but the bolt is machined up near the head of the bolt. This is the hardware store version I think. (Googled it) This type works on HD's ok because the rubber grommets hole is the same size as the threads or even larger. Vic's grommets are better designed and smaller so the bolt stays in the hole when the bags are off the bike. Hence the machined bolt. A simple but elegant improvement I think. The reason I know all about this is because I did most of the product testing on the Victory's for Brukus. I didn't get anything in return except for one kit of the finished product. We mailed products back and forth until we had it right.

Not trying to be a prick but hardware store sells those extruded nuts in any size you want a long with washer and bolt for way way less then 35 bucks

2011 cross country half bagger

I had a 2003 road king with the same type pins on the bags but they where much more secure for some reason. after 50,000 miles and stuffing those bags twice as much no problem. don't get me wrong love my victory, I traded the road king for a kingpin and then traded that for my cross country. much better bike all around.I still think there is a problem with that pin set up they come loose too easy. time will tell don't want anybody getting hurt. 2011 blue cross country leather bags, knurled grips, drilled out exhaust, lloydz fuel control, high flow air filter, flip wind shield, custom pass. floorboards, chrome rear brake cylinder cover, ness engine covers, ness mirrors, and I'm just getting started.new seat should be in next week.

$35 is a small price for someone that doesn't know their way around a hardware store to pay. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what it would cost to replace stolen or damaged bags.

I'm a tightwad and I love to tinker so I'm pretty familiar with the nut and bolt bins at lowes/home depot/pep boys. When my dzus pins wear or bend I'll pick up some allen head stainless bolts and nuts and install the so they go into the bag from the mounts. I may change my mind and use shanked bolts and nut plates though. It will come down to buying the cheapest option.

One could duplicate that machined area on the bolt by placing a drill in a vice and putting the bolt in its chuck and file the threads down to the mean diameter. The width of the swath to be filed is equal to the thickness of the grommet. Or a drill press can work too. As much as I like to help small companies, I too think that $35 is a bit much for hardware store items that will come to less that $5. But then, $35 is real cheap one time insurance premium.

When I made the prototype for the Brukus kit I used a grinding wheel and turned it down the width of the grinding wheel. Then put the bolt in a drill press and used a file to finish it up.

It didn't come out nearly as nice as the machined Brukus bolts but it would have worked ok. Again, for the price, the Brukus kit is a damn good deal for quality keyed stainless bolts and the key plus U clips. The U clips are the same found at the hardware store.

Doesn't matter to me what anyone uses but I bet the OP wishes he had them on his bike before the bag came off.

Or, I bet he wishes he checked to make certain the Dzus fasteners were FULLY ENGAGED. They can give you a false reading and one much double check to make sure they are locked in.:crzy:

You can't trust a mechanical check; pushing it in and turning it isn't enough. Its easy enough to see the fastener and gives peace of mind watching to make sure it fastens correctly.

The first time I had a bag off I thought I had put it back on properly but when I pulled a little on the bag it was revealed that the forward pin had not engaged fully. So as others have said....make sure both pins engage fully by whatever means neccesary. thumb up

this is bad deal you had....a grand and nothing new....
i have noticed my locks turning a bit and just straightened them back....these days...and for the princely sum of about 400...i got the bag bars...not for this reason...just because...they are really nice.

and by the way...i just checked mine...thanks for the post


as a tangent on this..i always have stuff in the bags and have had them packed tight...especially when leather is needed....what i do is forget to latch the tops...and i get a noticible butt shake when the flip open.....gets you attention at about 70 or so....
