As a result of recent threads such as http://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=83482 , which broggyr started on Hyper-Lites, and http://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=84297 , which I started on the trunk light, I decided to do something, anything.

I ordered CustomLED's Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher. It came a couple days ago, and yesterday morning I installed it (took about an hour).

I just finished a write-up, with pics, step-by-step explanations, vendor links, and a new YouTube video I made that demonstrates one of the blink modes with the trunk lights. If you're interested, here's my write-up:

And I'd like to thank whoever noted in some recent post (that I can't find at the moment) that he had hooked up this unit to the fender LED array without having an issue with the cruise control (which I also verified).

Fantastic Mod, Bill! Well done! thumb up

That flashing brake light is at the right height for all the four-wheelers approaching you while you're stopped. I, like others have the Hypers installed at the turn-signal level. I really need to consider this Mod too as it would really get the distracted drivers attention.

cheers

Yeah, Dave, I decided that with the never-ending increase of SUVs that the trunk was an appropriate place for this (and considering that in 20,000+ miles I've yet to take it off)... unless I'm being approached by someone in an MG Midget or something like that, in which case messing with the fender's brake lights might be better.

Thanks for the compliments.

Another job well done Bill.
I really like it.
Thanks much, Paul. Took longer to do the write-up & video than to do the mod. Of course, what else do I have to do with four days of rain.

Thanks very much for the write up! I just ordered one last week, and look forward to recieveing it. Your video will really help!

I swear I remember another thread where someone hooked this unit up and connected it to both the trunk light and the fender light, finding both wires next to eatchother under the seat. I like the trunk light being the first choice, but I think it would be even more noticeable with both lights flashing. Anyone remember how to connect this module to both brake lights??

Daybreak: concerning wiring to both sets of LED arrays, a few comments.

I don't recall reading a post like that, but if you find it, please let me know -- I might want to do that, if it's not too much work.

I emailed Custom Dynamics a week or so ago, asking a couple of questions. One was whether they knew if anyone had used the unit on the trunk of a Victory. They didn't know of any such installs, but included this in their response:

As far as the tour pak to strobe you may need to add a second flasher unit to achieve this. I'm not 100% sure of this but on the Harley bikes we do have to add a second flasher as the harness is two separate items and do not feed together.

Well, the LED array on the XCT's trunk is one unit, unlike, apparently, H-D's TourPak (which may include two separate arrays, especially if those lights also function as turn signals). So the Vic trunk-only method is not a problem... as I confirmed in my installation. But I wonder if you would face a Harley-like problem if you tried to connect only one unit to both the fender and trunk lights on a Vic. While CustomLED's own video states that a unit can handle a near "infinite" number of LEDs, my guess is that connecting different wire runs may lead to some problems. The ECM on a Vic is a notorious fussbudget in terms of monitoring things (hence my note about the cruise-control's still working), so I have to wonder what will happen if you match up (via one flasher) both sets of brake wires. But, as I say, I'd like to learn about it, too, if it's possible.

If you wind up, like me, with one brake-light modification, note that the Vic topcase lights are about 42" off the ground. I just measured the top of the steering wheel on my Camry, and it's about 44" off the ground (and the driver's head will be higher, of course, to say nothing of an SUV or truck driver). So, for one only, I think the trunk lights are a good choice, and the wiring is certainly easy to get to.

In any case, thanks for the compliment, and glad I may have been able to help (which is, after all, why I do my write-ups, especially given the amount of help I've gotten by asking questions and reading posts here for two+ years).

Bill, This is the thread I was referring to.

http://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=9709&page=4

It's on page 4 of the thread, post #39. thumb up
Good work, Daybreak. That's going back a year and a half!

I think I'll just leave well enough alone for now, but it certainly looks do-able if I'm ever messing around in that area. Good to know, too, for folks without a trunk.

[Edit: looking over the first post in that other thread, it looks to me as if the CANbus equalizer is required if you mess with the fender LEDs... if I'm reading that thread correctly. Using only the trunk LEDs, per my write-up, I definitely didn't need to add an equalizer. The cruise works just fine -- used it a lot in a ride today -- and the flashing certainly works great. If this is the case, I'll definitely just leave well enough alone.]

If you leave your trunk on all the time (like me), I think this is a pretty easy mod, easy to get to the wires (except for the part about piercing the outer sheath), and I think that the trunk lights are the perfect height for getting someone's attention.

Thank you for the kind words.
