I recently tried to cold start my 2012 Highball on a cold morning. I guess I held the starter button down too long and fried something. Replaced a bad battery, but when I turn on ignition, all I get is some brief blinking on instruments, and no life to the bike. Any ideas on what module I may have fried?

Geez; I hate electrical problems in general so I feel your pain.

A multi-meter will be your friend here. I would start at fuse box then the ignition switch and work out from there. I wish I had better info. Maybe someone else had this issue already and found a solution.

I have checked fuses and swapped relays. the Ignition switch is fine. It acts like something "intelligent" in the bike is not working. The display flashes a couple of times then goes blank.

Cold starts are hell on starters and batteries. Here's what I do; I place a room heater with a fan close to the engine about an hour before I want to start it. That warms the oil, the engine, the starter and the battery. When starting (no matter the temp) hold the throttle open about a 1/8 turn.
Cold batteries have greatly reduced energy and cold oil can be pretty thick. That's why I use Rotella T-6, because its 5W starting weight has less resistance, circulates quickly and fill the lifters fast.
If you were starting it just to run it for a few minutes, that is a very WRONG thing to do. Even if it started, that would cause eventual damage. For one thing, it will rust out the exhaust system due to condensation left in there. Never start an engine unless you intend to operate the vehicle long enough for a total and enduring warm up, such as a half hour plus ride. That will boil off the moisture the engine oil absorbed - yes, oil is hydrogenous, it absorbs atmospheric moisture. It's best to leave a hibernating bike sleeping until that longish ride.
I'm sorry that happened, and as far as what was destroyed, I can't say - a multi-meter search will tell you that. I hope this was a lesson for others here.

Useful information. Unfortunately this was a last-minute "Plan B" attempt to get to work on an early morning. I ended up late to work. I've accepted that I am gonna have to strip the bike down and try to identify the electronic component that got fried. Hoping this forum might be able to save me some time and $ in the shop.

I'm not the expert that Rylan Vos (the Vic Shop), Lloyd (Lloydz Motorworks) and KevinX (Southern Motorworks)* are (you might want to contact them) but were I in your place, I'd start with the cheap and easy things first, like the 40 amp circuit breaker on the positive cable from the battery. For $4 you can replace it and see if that's the gremlin. Then there's the regulator, then the starter.

First off put full charge in the battery. Second you need to heat the motor overnight. Space heater works good. Have you check to see if you have gas

I'm in Chino Hills, SoCal. Done the 1st 2, but wondering why the instrument pack would be affected. I will look to the regulator. All the relays looked okay to the naked eye.

This is a 2012 Highball in Southern California. Actual motor temp isn't too cold at the moment. Just stressed it trying to crank cold (was probably 55 degrees or higher at the time.

OH well hell that isn't cold at all, at least as far as starting the bike. There are some great videos on how to troubleshoot a bike that wont' start.. if I remember right KevinX has one that goes through each step from battery to the starter.

regulator only works when bike is running. Has nothing to do with starter
