Don't fall for this trap ...

Was just a few minutes ago scrolling through one of the threads and got a popup on the screen from "Microsoft Security Essentials" stating that my computer was infected with 3 different viruses. It had a button on it and it was telling me I needed to CLean My Computer Immediately!

DO NOT DO THIS ... if this happens to you as it may screw your computer up.

How do I know this?

First of all, I am a 25+ year IT pro
Secondly, I do not use MS Security Essentials
Third, I am at work operating behind a highly secure firewall (which I setup) with triple A/V protection.

Just a little "heads up" for you folks out there who aren't too computer savvy.

If y'all haven't done it, get yourselves a good AntiVirus app and keep it updated and don't fall for warnings such as the one I mentioned that "popup" in the middle of surfing the 'net.

Good advice but it won't pop up if you use Google Chrome as your browser nor will many of the other irritating "advertisements".

That's all fine and dandy in a simple world. In business environments and working with websites designed to operate only in IE, one cannot use other browsers.

What's interesting about this "popup" is that I did not click on anything... I was simply scrolling down the screen to view the last post to a thread which is in this forum.

This is how clean my screen looks, thanks to AdBlock. Notice, it blocked 12 ads on this screen. If you don't like ads, use AdBlock. cheers P.S.: I have blocked a few other things I don't need to see everyday, like the logo of the site. More space for the good content, and less for the stuff I don't want to see. ;)

I'm an IT pro too, but only about 15 years. I have used Microsoft Security Essentials for many years (it's FREE, and from Microsoft!) when it would clean things that many paid software suites couldn't.

I have yet to see a pop-up ad for MSE, and any 'pop-ups' I see for it are those where it's already installed and actually warning me about something.

It is very possible that the malware writer is cashing in on the success of a legit copy of MSE.

There is no one program that will catch anything, but MSE caught and cleaned stuff for me that AVG, Avira, and others didn't.

[EDIT] I use it at home, but not at work ;)

Tried downloading MSE and got a msg that it wouldn't be compatible with other Anti Virus and Anti Spyware programs, so I quit. I have AVG, Malwarebites, AdBlocker, and Super Anti Spyware. so far, no problems. Discalimer: I'm a bonafide Puter Putz. I understand women more than my computer.

I am not an IT guy per se, I am an engineer, but I work in a small field office for our company. So I am the IT guy for our office.

I have a receptionist and a tech that have clicked those damn things I don't know how many times in the last few years. I want to kill the asshats that write that stuff.

Our corporate office uses hardware firewalls and all the toys to block people from going to unauthorized sites, but I just stay quite because I don't want that crap here. I think I have them broke from doing that now, but I would rather spend an afternoon fixing someones system every now and then than have our corporate office monitoring everything I do on the internet at my office. I couldn't go all day without checking the forum. :p

Do not listen to this advice, I clicked on it and won ONE MILLION dollars... I just have to give the guy in Haiti $2000 as a 'good faith' offering and then he'll transfer the ONE MILLION to my account... YEAH!!!
