I have an 07 with 20,000 miles. The belt has about 1/2 inch of deflection to it when cold. When it gets warmed up, the tension is good. the dealer says this is because when the metal gears get hot, they expand taking up most of the deflection. This seems like a lot of expansion. Has any one else had any experience with this much expansion. Also, I live in the Phoenix area and I am currently running 20/50 full synthetic oil with 10% Lucas additive. The reason for this, when I come off of the freeway after about 1 hour running in this heat, the engine sounds almost like there is no oil in it, it is so noisy. When it is cold, it sounds quiet. It even has an oil cooler which is why I don't understand why it seems like it should be getting so hot. Any ideas. Great bike except for this and love it.

You ought to check out some test on engine oils. The Lucas does not fair to well on the info I have seen. Sorry no opinion on the belt tension.I live out in Buckeye. I have used the Amsoil 20w-50 in my air/oil cooled Triumph twin. It has over 73,000 miles on it now. Some do not like it in the Victorys because of possible clutch slippage.

Also synth oil doesn't transfer heat as well as dino oil. It does tolerate a lot more heat before breaking down though.
You might want to research your facts just a bit...

Synthetic oil has better heat transfer qualities than dino oil, so your internal engine temperatures will be lower. The better lubricating properties of synthetic in general will lead to a longer engine life as well.

As far as the belt deflection... depends on how you are measuring it. The book says the rear tire off the ground and 10 lbs of force applied to the tightest spot on the belt. Great... spend your day measuring instead of riding. Instead with the bike on the ground twist the belt and if you can turn it 45* it should be fine.

Belt deflection is normal. I have a XR and the belt has almost an inch of slack when cool and is tight when warmed up. The pullies expand when hot.

I realize this is a very old thread but ....

I find statements about 1" of deflection interesting. The manual states to find the stiffest point in the belt and adjust to 12 mm deflection +- .5 mm. That is less than 1/2 inch deflection...

Yup , and it will bind up tight when it gets hot .... Happened to me , and I set it perfectly to spec . Go on the loose side ....

At the time I had a Hammer , that's why it references 6mm deflection .....

Thanks Mags. Read the whole thread.... I think that is my problem and will test the theory this weekend. Bikes cold I don't hear anything, once it's ridden I get a 'moan / droan' from what I thought was the front end. Know I think it is the front pulley shaft because the belt gets too tight.

Yep , your belt is too tight when hot .. Get it hot and tight , then adjust it to have some deflection ... Sounds backwards , but that's how I do it , and it works !

Old thread but it's not the pulleys that expand so much, it's the belt that shrinks as it warms up. I also adjust mine on the loose side of 1/2-3/4.
