I have available, within a couple of miles of my home, numerous fuel choices. In addition to the standard 87,89,& 93 octane unleaded 10% ethanol fuels I have the following choices available at the pump:

Sunoco 260 GT, 100 octane ethanol free oxygenated race fuel
Sunoco 260 GTX, 98 octane ethanol free non-oxygenated race fuel
REC 90, 90 octane ethanol free marine fuel

Disregarding cost what would you choose and why? What are the long term effects?

I have mostly opted for the REC 90 and see no real difference in performance no matter what fuel I use. So I'm hoping for some insight into the long term affects of fuel choice will be.

100% gas vs E10 doesn't seem to make a difference in FE or performance in my bike which is stock an O2's plugged in. Octane rating is suppose to be 93 but 89 octane works well at least through spring. I tend to use the higher octane fuel in summer to help the bike run cooler. I haven't really noticed much difference there but will be watching this year in over 100 degree days with both 89 and 93 octane fuel.

Use any gas that doesn't have corn in it. If you ride mostly flat hwys you can do just fine with 87 or 89 just remember when you come to a good size hill to down shift.
Do Not run the race gas there is no benfit to it. You can go on the net and find gas station they have no corn in there gas.
Matter of fact the AMA is fighting it now in front of congris

There are a LOT of threads on "which fuel" but the OP's original postulation is a bit "odd" as it's oriented towards racing fuels and MARINE 90 (?) so I guess what he is REALLY asking is... are they a significant benefit to which the other gazillion threads to direct the reader to conclude that ..."NO, there is absolutely NO POINT in going with those higher grades". In fact, many actually run the REGULAR 87 octane the majority of the time with excellent results unless it's 100+ degrees and then most are going with the 89 or 91 octane variants. NOBODY is using racing fuel UNLESS they have a specially-tuned engine and are going for a speed record but those engines ARE specially tuned to those higher grade fuels whereas a typical Victory (yes, even one WITH Cams) is NOT designed to run on such premium fuels.

It doesn't have to be that hot for it to knock. You just have to wind the engine up a little. Use low grade fuel at your own risk. Been there, done that, and heard the metallic cacophony to prove it. The potential of doing such damage really isn't worth the $1 you save on a fill up.

Guess I will be running corn fuel. Closest station to me. 100+ miles.

Fuel threads are always interesting.

Here's some examples for ya -
2007 GL1800 Gold Wing, recommended 86+ octane. Runs perfect on 87 octane. Zero ping.

2010 GL1800 Gold Wing, recommended 86+ octane. Pings lightly on acceleration on 89 octane. Heavier ping in hot weather. Been back to the dealer twice. They checked it out and can't find anything wrong with it. Ran several tanks laced heavy with Sea Foam on long trip @ 80 mph for extended periods. No change. Sounds like a sewing machine on 87 octane.

2009 Harley Street Bob 96 cu in, 91+ recommended. Runs great on 87 octane. No ping.

2008 Harley Fat Boy 96 cu in, 91+ recommended. Pings on 91 octane. Needs 93 if you don't want the ping.

2012 Yamaha Super Tenere, recommended 91 octane. Runs great on 87. Gets crappy fuel mileage with 91+ fuel.

This is my first Victory, after more than 50 motorcycles.
Bought it a week and a half ago.
I'm currently running 89 octane fuel. No ping.

We'll see what it does after getting some miles on it.

My concern is detonation on hard acceleration on hot summer days. I dont like ethanol in my fuel. Therefore I'm left with the above choices. Unfortunatley there is no choice here between 90 and 98 octane withhout ethanol. With regard to the oxygen/non-oxygenated I'm clueless. I've witnessed low octane/high temp detonation in a high compression motor I put in a car and frankly it got very expensive and very nasty really fast. I just dont know what my victory engine can handle. Any knock or ping makes me nervous.

My appologies if this subject has been beat to death but the search function was returning only error messages this morning

My FJR is spec'd to run 87. When I do, it pings on acceleration. On a scale of "trivial" to "turn off the motor before she blows," the pinging on the FJR rates just over trivial. I've heard Gold Wings that sound the same way.

The Vic is a different beast. I had to run 87 in it once because I needed gas and that's all the station carried. I rode it home and it never complained.

With this experience under my belt, I was sure I was smarter than the Vic engineers and could use the cheap stuff at will. And so I did for some time without any of the pesky pinging I hear on my FJR.

One day I was riding home down a 55 mph back road with my wife in tow and I layed on the gas to pass a car. The engine noise pegged the "turn off the motor before she blows" scale limit. And it wasn't particularly warm out. I use premium exclusively now.

If I had to use regular it wouldn't bother me, but I'd go easy on the throttle.

I live near several lakes and have several gas stations near me that sell 100 percent gas (boat guys around here won't run ethanol blends). I have kept a spread sheet of my mpgs with time of year, gas station, octane, cost, etc. Funny thing is that my best 3 tanks of gas have been from 10% ethanol stations (and so have my worst 3). Almost half of my fill ups have been from the non-ethanol station and have been getting my regular avg of 43 mpgs. I know a lot of factors play into mpg but thought it was interesting since you would think the non ethanol place would have atleast give me on of my best 3 tanks.

When I first got my XR, I pretty much ran 93 in it because the only place with 91 was Sunoco. After a while, I figured I would try 89, simply because everyone has it and it is a bit cheaper. No problems at all using 89. It actually seemed to run better. I then tried 87. This also seemed to work well.....that is until I was loaded 2 up in the hilly twisties of Southwest NH! It really started to ping alarmingly! I pulled in to the first gas station I came to and topped it up with 93. I now run 89 with no problems at all.

Since my light comes on when I have used 4 gallons of gas I usually just get 89 octane every third fill up. That safely keeps me around 91 octane.

The rule of thumb for internal combustion engines has always been "run the lowest octane possible without sustained pinging".

The argument currently in front of congress has nothing to do with E10... it is totally about E15 and the potential for this type of fuel to do damage to motorcycle engines.

:I agree: Corn squeezins belong in a glass, not in your gas. That said, it is here to stay and many of the "Pure Gas" depots aren't really. You'll get a bump in mileage if you do run across it, and the octane rating has nothing to do with it being there.

I'll keep using the 91+ to combat the heat and because 98%+ of the time I'm two up. There are enough things to worry about in life and splitting hairs because I want cheap gas isn't one of them.

I run a bone stock set up, so I guess those with tuners and a rchend mixture could get away with lower octane. Rule of thumb is the lower the better, but I wonder how much pinging and rattling goes on before some folks actually hear it.

Miles and miles from where I live we only have 3 options; 87, 89 and 91. It ALL has 10% ethanol in it. I only have 4000 miles on my CCT and have ridden 90% of those miles with 91 octane gas. Works fine. Some experts say only run 91 octane and others say run 87 or 89. So, I guess what octane level to use will get a lot of various responses.

If you run the lower octane fuel just downshift or feather the throttle to eliminate pinging (if it pings at all).

Hmmmmm. I'm riding a Vegas 8-Ball and ride like an old man.
Oh wait ! I am !

Solo seat.

Probably easier for me to get away with lower octane than those of you with baggers and portly wives.


hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha (sorry, I was thinking Gold Wing riders - please forgive me).
