I know this has been discussed before but please stick with me. I have very specific questions.

I just looked down at my 13 Hardball and realized I have 550mi on it. So it is due for the first maintenance. When I first bought the bike, I told myself that I was going to take it in and then do the rest of the work myself. Well after a ton of headaches and fighting with the dealership owner, and sales guy, I really have no desire to step back in that place. I simply do not want to give them my business any longer.

I plan on doing the service myself, and wanted to ask the general audience if there is a specific list of things that need to be done / checked. I have searched around and seen a few things here and there, but I really need a hard list. Please help.

I am not concerned about doing the work myself as I am a very strong mechanical back ground.

Also what does everyone use for oil and filter? I have been a die hard Mobil 1 fan since I bought my first vehicle and it has been in everything I have owned since. Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks all!

Congratulations on purchasing a fine machine and welcome. cheers

Your maint schedule should be in your owners manual. If you did not get one, you can download...as DP pointed out.

There is a link to the shop manual for the cross bikes floating on this site somewhere. I downloaded it and did my own 500 mile service. I was able to do it all except for checking the torque on steering head or whatever they call it and the compression check. The main thing you want to do is check and probably tighten your drive belt, check to make sure there are no bolts loose anywhere and of course change your oil and filter.

Agreed definitely check your belt specs everything else is pretty simple and easy to do your self. I skipped the belt check on my 500mi and waited until my 5k and I can tell you that my belt was very, very loose.

Your dealer sounds like mine. Victory really needs to do something about this. When you have a small dealer network you can ill afford for them to alienate customers.

I had the 500 mile deal done at the dealer. Was quick and thorough. Oil, checked over bike etc. $200. That part sucked but I feel better knowing all is good so far.

Your dealer sucks! Mine included the 500 mile check just to keep happy customers and no, it was not hidden in the $9995 price of my Kingpin. Even at 10,000 miles, the service tech found an oil leak that I'd have never found. I'd find a dealer within riding distance and schedule a Saturday appointment for the 500 mi check. No warranty issues that way either.

I feel your pain. My dealer can take a long walk off a short pier. Hope they can't swim.

There should be a service schedule in the owners manual. Go by it. Find a good independent or a decent Vic shop, they say they are out there, and use them on things over your head.

Oil?!?! Use something that is reasonably close to viscosity, and wet clutch rated. Mobile 1 MC, not the V-Twin HD syrup, is good stuff, there are plenty of other JASO-MA oils out there. I don't really get how a Japanese Automotive Standard Organization sets the standard for American or any bike that isn't Japanese, but what do I know. Wet clutches have been around a long time, and Vic didn't invent them. They made them inconsistent at times, but that is an individual case.

Congrats, and Good Luck cheers

Do all my own service including the 500 Mi initial.
Using 20-40 Castrol Semi Synthetic meets all the requirements of Ma-Vic.

Tired of getting the run around from bad Dealers which is one of the reasons for owning a relatively "Simple" air cooled twin with no radiator or valve adjustment. :^)
