I have 3 air gauges. They were all cheap-- get by stuff. Since they all were close together in readings most of the time, I assumed (and you know what happens when we assume) they were "somewhat" accurate.

I upgraded to an Accu Gauge and found out my "cheapo get bys" were off by more than I thought. My 40 lb front tire was really 36-- same for the rear.

We all know 4 lbs in a tire is a big difference and on the X bikes the shock, also. Might want to check that out. thumb up

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,What exactly makes you think the one you just spent big bucks for is accurate? Has it been calibrated after shipping?


Yea I know that will prolly start an all out brawl, but big dollars isn't always better. It should be, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well you know. LOL



BTW, say what you want, and I know I've been lucky, but the slime $10 digital has been great for me. Within a pound according to local tire shop gauge and car dealer gauges. YMMV

I've also found the Slime digital gauge to be very close. The gauges we use in the tire shop have to be within 1 PSI of actual, and the Slime digital gauge typically reads within 1 PSI of those gauges.

I'm not above spending $10 or more on a good pencil-type gauge tho, and have one I've used for years. Still accurate.

Actually the reason I started the thread is that it never crossed my mind until 1 that I never use gave a reading that was way, way off. I was not smart enough to grasp that it was a bad gauge and rode under inflated and knew something was wrong. 2 of the 3 were freebies and the third was a Harbor Freight special.

Anyway, the Accu Gage may be off--- but I will be consistantly off from now on. :D

In my experience the actual number is irrelevant. It's the resulting ride that matters, the number is just a reference point. Does the bike handle better now that you've added another 4 lbs to the tires and shock? If so, great, if not, go back to where you had it previously. Excessively low pressure in the tires is obviously dangerous but lower than factory specs is not necessarily, especially if you're running other than the OE tires. My honda calls for 38/42 f/r. I will say that it does seem to run fairly nice at those pressure. Unless I have take off tires on it, or it's really hot out, or I'm at the track, etc. etc. My pressures vary greatly based on what I'm doing with the bike. Frequently I run those tires 8-14lbs below what honda suggests because given the tire I have on it at the time and what I'm using it for, their pressures would put me on the ground while mine give me optimal traction. It all depends.

I have a shock pump and put my shock at 40 psi. I then tuck my tire gauge nd checked it and it was right on. At a friends house and used his Kuryakyn digital tire gauge and it was at 40 so I believe what I have.
When the temps get over 95 degrees you'll find you'll loose at least 2 to 3 pounds every two weeks.
With the price of tires any thing one can do to get longer life out of them is money saved
