Had a long, 11 hr. day of work paving in 90+ degree heat and was enjoying my ride home. I started getting an uncomfortable feeling in the front of my right hip. Then turned into the feeling of someone pushing a broom handle into it!! Nothing I did would make it feel better! Felt like it was going to dislocate! I had to make an emergency move to get to the side of the road! Put my feet down and stood up. Pain went away and all was fine. Man, did that suck!!!

Many years ago, I started to get similar symptoms. Long story short; a disc was collapsing and pinching nerves. Thought going to chiropractors and even getting acupuncture would make it go away, but it didn't. One night, the disc ruptured, giving me excruciating pain. Back surgery was the cure. I'm not a doctor, so I don't know what you're experiencing, but I would recommend you go see one so you don't have to go through what I had to. Just an old timer's two cents worth.

11 hour day in 90 degree heat = You need more fluids. The cramps are your body screaming for mercy.

I got hit with the heat one time in Iraq to the point that I basically passed out and had to be carried back to a Humvee. One of the soldiers I was with grabbed me a Gatorade and it was like a miracle nectar. Next thing I know there was a commotion on the other side of the Humvee. When he walked back to get himself a Gatorade, he passed out and was on the ground.

Don't play with the heat.

Amen to that Billy. Happened to me once and that was a lifetime reminder to stay hydrated. When doing long, all day trips in warm to hot weather, I place a Platypus water pouch in the tank bag. That way, I can take sips while under way. I fill the pouch first with ice, then top with water. I then wrap it in a towel for insulation. That has been a lifesaver and I probably mean that literally.

I tried to stay hydrated. I drank 10 bottles of water and 2 cans of iced tea throughout the day. Then another 4 bottles of water till I went to bed. I also had a cramp in my calf while sleeping too!!!

You probably aren't gonna believe what I,m about to write, but it really works. Why? I have no idea, it just does...
Place a bar of soap (any soap) under the bottom sheet of your bed, near where your lower legs would be.
I used to get leg cramps during the night that were so extremely painful, I'd wake up with my eyes tearing. No more. dance 1

Eat more bananas. Low potassium will cause cramping. If you were hydrating but not replacing anything but H2O you're still in need of vital nutrients. On long HOT rides, I always make sure to "re-salt" by way of Gatorade and I'll keep jerky in my bag with some extra water. But Nanners are a quick fix for crampy legs.

All the above are good remedies for cramps. The hip "pointer" that a lot of us experience is more than a cramp... which is muscular in nature. Rather it is the forward movement of your hip joint that is either being caused by muscle spasms or is the cause of the spasms. Your instance seems to be heat and dehydration related, but I know that I get the same thing occasionally caused by riding position or something other than being dehydrated.

I think all riders have gotten that popping hip cramp before, and man it does suck. I have found that bananas help me the most along with fluids of course.

I think hip pointer is the correct term for what I had. My butt also goes numb but that happens no matter what I'm driving. Guess I'll have to take breaks on longer rides.
