Ok, so next weekend when the last of my wife's riding gear arrives, I will be taking her out for her first ride on my Hammer S.

Since it's only been ridden solo (and will be 95% of the time) I realize I might have to adjust the rear shock for the additional 125lb weight on the back.

Do I need to make any adjustment?
HOW do I make the adjustment?
DO I have to keep re-adjusting when I go back and forth from pillion to solo all the time???


Thanks for the advice. I just don't wanna get 2 blocks away and bottom out on a bump or have the belt rubbing and shredding.

I don't have a hammer but I think my jackpot is pretty close for comparison. I also do most riding by myself but have never had any problem riding two up with the wife. I will say I've bottomed out once or twice but they were some nasty bumps I didn't think were as bad as they were. In my owners manual it says mine is set up for a 230lb operator and a 165lb passenger. Never any problems with the belt and I don't adjust the shock preload. I'm pretty sure you need a spanner wrench to adjust it.

There is a special wrench for adjustment that you can get from dealer OR, use a rubber mallet and a long straight screw driver. Release the locking nut (one on top) and turn clockwise the bottom nut all the way down then lock the upper nut. Best if bike is lifted so you get the least resistance as you compress the shock.

That how mine is setup permanently (maximum compression). Even though I do 99% solo riding, the one percent is enough to just keep it as is. Makes for a stiffer ride when solo, which I don't mind as it keeps the suspension compressed and gives better handling (IMHO).

If you hear any rubbing (whistle) of belt, then it's too much weight, which won't be a problem if you are at max compression and combined weight is within 400 lbs. Be gentle on first time out on bumps, the bottoming out noise can't be missed and check your tail light wiring if you do bottom out. I learned the hard way.......
