So I tried to adjust my bars up but they don't get anywhere close to the up position. They raised maybe a few inches before they hit the fairing. I don't even have to adjust the levers. So is that it or am I missing something.

I dunno for sure. But I think they have to have some "pull back" before you can gain any up angle. Just the way the bend is in them. I got my XCT used and it already had the pull back bars on it. But I cant get a bunch of up either.

If you are too far from the bars and don't have the proper elbow bend, go see Don at Mr. Ed's Moto in Albany. He has 30 years experience doing saddle customizing. When I went there, that's the first thing he noticed, that my arms were to straight for good control, so he modded the saddle to move me an inch forward. It helped with the foot controls too. The adjustment range is form the low point, minimum clearance of the tank to the high point when the bars hit the fairing. I haven't had the stock bars for years but I do remember raising them and feeling a big difference and having to move my controls a bit. I'm 6 ' tall with normal arm length for my height.

I went from the oem bars (too short for me) on my CCT to the 2" pullbacks. The 2" pullbacks 'seem' like they can be moved up more due to the longer reach. IMHO, the 2" pullbacks made a very nice improvement over the stock CCT bars. At the mounting point, the rotation is the same with the oem bars and the 2" pullback bars. But at the grips, the 2" pullbacks will move the grips farther up than the oem bars.

I then went to the Victory apes and simply love them. I don't have them rotated as far forward as they can go due to the elbow bend Ricz posted on above. But these are as comfortable as can be for me. I'm only about 5'11" with 'normal' arm length. Having the apes rotated back towards me a bit made them a perfect fit for me. No change needed in wiring or cables on any handlebar configuration I've had on my 2012 CCT.

I thought about the Victory Mitered Mini Apes a few times but read too many posts about owners that didn't like them. I found a set of Mitered apes and 'regular Victory apes at a dealer once. I held them both on a table go get a feel for them. For me, the Mitered apes would have been awful as they're meant to move the hands too far forward.

I also like the grip angle of the Victory apes better then either the oem or the Victory 2" pullback bars.

Another option could be the Rick Fairless (Stroker's Dallas) Boogie bars. They have a very nice grip angle, bring the hands up to a very comfortable position and IMHO, look great. Like all aftermarket handlebars, they're also not drilled for the location pins of the stock clutch and brake levers.

Re those holes in the bars for locating the lever perches: One of the very first things I did to my XR was to undo the perches and grind off their locator pins. The levers were angled all wrong for me and needed to be rotated.
I was taught long, long, long ago that a rider not only needs to have an elbow bend but the wrists must be aligned with the forearm and not bent.

Which do you suppose is cheaper? Getting the pullback bars or having the saddle modded? If the saddle mod is the better and cheaper way to go, I may lean towards the mod.

Having said that, I think Albany may be a little out of my way to have Don give me his opinion, so I am hopeful that I can find an equally qualified local shop. Plus, I am not wanting to ship my saddle off across the country and not be able to ride for 2-3 weeks.

I have no idea how much work, or the cost, involved is for either the bars or the saddle. In either case, I like to be a little closer to the bars. Whether they move to me or I move to them.

Pull back bars for the XC are about $300 new. You might find some used. They can be installed by anyone who knows which end of a wrench to hold. The instructions that come with the bars are good. I've installed three sets on XCT bikes and all the installs went well.

cheap alternative

cheap way to push you to the bars IF you have a vic drivers backrest is to put it it the low/forward position. most have never tried it that way, but it works. just push it forward, then slide the bottom down over the seat lip

Vicbaggers will custom make any pullback and rise you want. They were $300 when I had my bars made.
