How in Hades Does One Remove Scratches From Victory Black Paint

I have 23,000 (+ or -) hard miles on my CCT. Unfortunately the condition of the BLACK paint reflects the miles. I have done pretty good taking care of the finish… kept it clean and waxed, only ever used the best microfiber cloths. This has sufficed for all of my previous bikes. But for some reason this bike has not kept it’s shine like the previous rides. There are several places where bug guts have amazingly stained the black paint and there are a billion minor scratches all over it.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided I was going to do something about this problem. I got some 3M rubbing compound “Scratch Remover 2.0” and a 3-step Tutrlewax kit especially for black paint. The 3M rubbing compound has a cutting scale of 3, so it is moderately aggressive. I already had some Maguire’s “Ultimate Compound” that is basically a chemical paint cleaner and some Auto Klass that is an acrylic paint sealant. The Klass does a good job sealing the paint and making is super easy to the bugs off.

I started on a Monday by washing the bike thoroughly. Then I used the Ultimate Compound to remove the old wax. Rubbed the whole bike down twice by hand over a couple of days with the 3M rubbing compound. Hit it hard a third time concentrating on the areas that had the most visible damage. Unfortunately the scratches and swirls would not rub out. Most didn’t even seem to be affected. I was tired of rubbing already and was getting nowhere despite all my efforts, so I moved on to the Turtlewax. Used their detailer spray to remove any rubbing compound residue, then applied “Step 1” the glaze, buffed that out good, and let it cure for a day. Next evening I started with “Step 2” which is the detailer to remove any glaze residue, then applied “Step 3” which the wax, and buffed. Let that cure for a day and buffed again real good before using the detailer again. Last coat was the Auto Klass sealant. Then buffed and buffed to get all that stuff off.

As one would expect after a 20 step waxing process the shine was awesome. Rich, deep, black super shiny abyss of almost mirror black from 5 feet. But if you get close or the light hits from just the right angle you can still see all one billion little scratches, accompanying swirls, and bug stains. :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

Damn, what gives? Is this just futile with black paint? Maybe I need a custom paint job that is not black?

I had a few black vehicles and found that to be a problem with them... 2 flat black bikes and they are the worst cause it's unpolishable.

My 2014 XCT is Black and Goldrush - the damn black shows every little scratch and bug entrail! The Goldrush looks like new and doesn't seen to be bothered by anything? I am wondering if the Black isn't clear coated properly ( as thick) as the Gold?

Yep, this one is a keeper. Riding the snot out of it and loving every mile. Had cams, timing wheel, and PC5 installed a while back. That was a kick in the pants.

The last XC was that awesome dark blue metal flake. When I turned it in there was 25,000+ on the clock and the paint was flawless.

Thinking about custom paint in another year or so. This is just another reason to go for it.

WHEW! I ducked that bullet. I was dead set on getting a black XR back in 2010, when on the test ride, I was riding a black one and my escort was on the midnight cherry one. We stopped for a breather, the bikes parked side by side, gleaming in the sun. I took one look at the red one with the light bringing out the gold flake and no way was I gonna buy black.

I recently came across an acronym that fits my thoughts on cruiser color, ABB - Anything but black.

I would make an exception for this one.



Prolly because it has just enough red contrast to make it interesting, but also because it reminds me of bikes of yore when I was but a long tongued wannabe.

this is great stuff to prevent rock chips and scratches. Yes in the right light you can see it but what would you rather have.
Napa and auto zone sells it.

Just liken the scratches to little badges of honor, They ain't coming out..
Remember an unscratched bike is an unridden bike......

Unfortunately, you are probably stuck with them.

I use a mild buffing compound, 3M scratch and swirl remover and a good carnuba wax with a polish on top. Works well and I was able to get a scratch painted with touch up and blended with this and some sand paper. My wife nearly freaked when I broke out the sand paper. LOL The trick these days is knowing when to stop, and it is much earlier than years past.

Black is a tough color, followed by white of all things as hard to keep. If you aren't good with a buffer, leave well enough alone. With the thin paint these days, that may not be a bad idea anyway.

The swirls may be in the wax and if so are removable, but it sounds like a clear coat is in your future to get rid of this, sorry to say though, it probably won't be permanent. A close look at most black vehicles will show this sort of character.

Let it go and love the ride. Sounds like you may be as good as you can reasonably get.

I'm a recovering BBB...black bike buyer. Oh, I can see having a basic cruiser or standard in black, but not a bagger or tourer.
