I noticed a hesitation or stutter in the 3000rpm range recently. It happened a few times and always in that range. I figured I'd just do the usual bit and took the opportunity to change fluids filter and plugs. Since then the issue has gotten worse. The bike is stalling and hesitating/stuttering in all RPM ranges. I figured I'd pull the tank and clean the throttle bodies. Not a big issue, have done it on a friends kingpin. Trouble is that the convenient access panel does not exist on my airbox. Has anyone had this issue? If so. What was your solution? How much time did getting at the throttle bodies take? Thanks in advance for all of your help guys.

There is no need to clean the throttle body cause there is a different breathing system on your bike not like the kingpin.
If your getting hesitation your lacking gas. Your fuel pump might be going out. You can rent a pressure tester at the auto store for next to nothing. You should have 50psi. You can save your self a lot of time by doing this now.

There is no need to clean the throttle body cause there is a different breathing system on your bike not like the kingpin.

If your getting hesitation your lacking gas. Your fuel pump might be going out. You can rent a pressure tester at the auto store for next to nothing. You should have 50psi. You can save your self a lot of time by doing this now.



I checked my fuel pressure probably thirty times and everything seems to be fine with my pump. Tested waited tested again. Went for a ride then tested etcetera etcetera. I did decide to give sea foam a shot and it seems to have helped the situation. Very little and much more infrequent stuttering. I'll keep you informed as to what the end result is.

I do have a question and I am admittedly just being lazy and haven't looked for the answer yet.
How does the new airbox design remove the need to clean your throttle bodies?

They changed the breather system after 08 so there is no need to clean bodys.
Funny if you check your fuel pressure you would of said what your read out was.
Have you checked the battery cables with a wrench to see if there tight.
Your IAV could have a slight vacuum leak or maybe not working right

Sorry that my reply was not up to your standards VJ. I figured that stating that everything seemed to be fine with my fuel pump was clear enough. I have checked all of my lines and connections including the battery. The issue is all but gone now so I'm leaning towards it being an issue with bad fuel. I will obviously keep an eye on it.

Have you checked the battery cables with a wrench to see if there tight.
Your IAV could have a slight vacuum leak or maybe not working right
after I cut my airbox out of my 2010 Vegas to fit the Ness unit I cleaned the throttle bodies as I now had access as there was a reasonable amount of crap came off them.
not that the bike was running rough or anything just while I had access I thought Id do it.
They still get dirty, maybe not as much as the previous models , Ive had no experience with them.

You don't have to clean your throttle bodies on 2009 and newer Vics, like visionjohnny said. That's not the issue here.

Check battery terminals and make sure they have not worked themselves lose. Certain vibration at certain RPM can cause quick power interruptions, enough to cause the hesitation you're describing.

Do you have a fuel controller on your bike?

I do not have a fuel controller. Other than pipes I haven't done any modifications on the mechanical side.

I have checked my electrical connections and as I said earlier I believe it may have been an issue with the fuel itself. I have run a tank with sea foam added and most of another tank without any additives. I haven't had the issue happen at all today and I have put nearly 200 miles on her today. The issue has slowly been diminishing since treating the fuel so I'm confident that it was bad gas. Thanks for your advice. I truly do appreciate it.

Now if someone can explain how the new design negates the need to clean the throttle bodies I would love to hear it. I haven't found any information so far.

has a 100 " motor where the breather hose went into the air box.

On 106" motors the hose runs up into the frame so there is no oil blow by going into the air box.
So there is no mess in the the air box's on any 106" motor and no need for cleaning.

Don't take our word for it spend a day and rip into and find out were telling you the truth.

You say you checked your fuel pump but you new did say what pressure your getting. Just pushing on the sharder valve and getting gas out proves nothing

Am lost you say a 2010 model so that would be a 106 motor not a 100 you have listed

The pre 2008 bikes needed throttle body cleanings because the buildup would cut down the idle air opening getting around the butterfly. This would cause idle rpm to drop, which would lead to plug fowling and stalling. The 2008 and up bikes use an air valve to control idle rpm, so it maintains idle rpm regardless of how much buildup is in the throttle valve area. And on my old bike, I had good luck simply raising the idle with the stop screw when the throttle bodies were getting dirty. Only if I had the tank off, would I bother doing a cleaning.
