As promised...the following is my Product Review of the Klockwerks Windshield.

DISCLAIMER: I don't work for Klockwerks (my boss may argue that I don't work at all...but that's another type of post) and I'm not a professional motorcycle product reviewer or engineer. My review is from a 'Joe-Schmoe' perspective and I will try to be as simple and direct as possible. The photos are from my iPhone at night in my garage (is that enough excuses?) so I apologize if they don't meet anyone's image standards.

That said...the windshield came in your standard package with a plastic cover on the windshield and a plastic bag.

Hardware...

They shipped mounting hardware that I found very well thought out. They sent 4-each of: a screw (#4 hex); a metal washer with a bushing that fit into the mounting hole in the windshield; and a rubber washer (that I liked because it puts something soft between the windshield and metal mounting screw bushing...my other windshields I've had didn't have this to include the Gustfassen +4" that this windshield is replacing.

Looking good so far...:)

Curves....

When I took the windshield out of the packaging the first thing I noticed was the curve or indentation+flip on the sides of the windshield. Hadn't really heard about those (or just plain missed it) but I thought it looked good. Also noted they had added the blackout on the windshield that in the video review on the Vog.net said wasn't there on the prototype.

The top flip...and distortion...

The top of the windshield didn't have as hard as a flip as I thought it would...

The motorcycle in the picture (my beautiful 2006 T100) is about a foot in front of the front tire of the XC.

The reason I say it isn't that bad is because it's not anywhere near my field of sight when sitting on the bike...I know, here are my stats for comparison:

I'm just under 5'7"...I have a 30" inseam...the top of the Gustfassen +4 hits right around the bottom of my nose when I sit-up and I look through it when I slouch.

When I sit-up behind this new windshield it hits me around the bottom of my chin and when I slouch I still see easily over the top.

Compared to the Gustfassen +4

I laid the plastic cover that was cut to fit on the Klockwerks windshield on top of my Gustfassen +4 so you could "see" the difference. Basically the shield is about two inches shorter & has those sexy curves in the sides...which does make a differnce when riding (more on that in a bit). thumb up

Yeah...I know...how about when you're riding behind it?

Okay, okay...so here's my product review. I told you I'm not a pro at this so give a Schmoe a break.

Riding...the BLUF (Bottom-Line-Up-Front...we love our acronyms in the military)...I love this windshield!!!

Here's why...at ALL speeds up to 85 mph (that's the quickest I went this morning during my commute) there was no buffetting.

The riding conditions were great...no wind, cool temps (70 degrees), and a range of roads...going from two lane country roads that I road from 35 to 65 mph, to a VERY crowded interstate that I reached 85 mph (although not for very long), to a four lane city expressway, to a bridge that was about a quarter mile long going over a pretty good size lake.

There was very little wind so to compensate for that I used the friendly 18-wheelers that were going 65+ mph to get into some dirty air to see how the bike handled.

For comparison, I wear a Nolan 100E flip-face helmet (custom pen & ink+sharpee paint job...the top of the helmet is my avatar...just sayin'). When riding behind the Gustfassen +4 I get very LITTLE buffeting..usually from a crosswind or when I get in really dirty air around those 18-wheelers. Again, it's not much with Gustfassen (just the occasional 'slap') but with this windshield I got nada. :D

No issues at all with vision...in fact, I completely forgot about the distortion until I arrived at work and was parking...that's when I thought, "Hey, remember to mention your thoughts on the distortion."

I did my best to emmulate a tall rider by getting my head completely above the windshield along with being a 'vertically challenged' person by slouching as low as I could (although I couldn't quite make it low enough to be seeing through the windshield to the road...basically the fairing got in the way of seeing the road at that point :p). In both incidents the air remained clear...one caveat, I did this testing clear of traffic at about 55 mph...didn't want to chance doing it in heavy traffic at higher speeds. ;)

Bugs...I left home at 0600 in complete darkness. I road 7+ miles of two-lane country roads (watching for deer!) and trying to test for 'bug dodging capabilities'. With our drought we don't have the normal flying insect population but from those that fell into my headlight trance only one actually hit the windshield...all the others were 'pushed' up-and-over from the shield and the bike.

Those sexy side curves...I liked the way they look and I believe they are a big part of why the air stays so clean and the bugs get pushed away from the sides. I'll be watching to see if the other reviews note this too, but from my inital ride I'd say they serve more than just good looks...kind of like my wife...curvy and for good reason...;)

That's about it for now...if I note anything else when I my ride home or when we're riding two-up I'll add it!

Now I am even more excited to be getting mine. Just checked the projected arrival date and it's not to be here until the 21st (coming all the way across the country via FedEx) so until then I will have to live vicariously through you.

On a side note, did you sell your Guft on here? I am trying to understand if anyone might want my Victory original off my '11 XC and if so how much should I be asking for it?

wind shield for a tall GUY

I'm 6' 3' inseam 34 ". the victory tall windshield is right level with my line line of sight and I get a lot of distortion. I tried 18" Cee Baily dragon and seems to help, but still getting the marble head from buffiting.
any suggestions?
maybe some lower air deflectors?
Cee baily shield is better, but still having problems with the buffiting.
I'm exchanging my 18" for taller shield maybe 20", no problems with ee bAily
maybe I'm too tall for the bike?

Thanks! Not to get your hopes up but my windshield arrived a couple days EARLIER than the projected delivery date. Hopefully yours arrives early too...looking forward to your review to see if you feel the same about the wind protection.

Until then...I'll do my best to enjoy it and try to send happy riding thoughts your way...thumb up

I haven't tried selling my Guft +4 yet but plan to post it in a few days. I told someone on here that I'd give them first shot at it so I'll need to find that post and shoot him a PM.

I'm sure someone will want your shield...so many folks like to have original equipment to modify...or have tried to modify and need a new one that's cheaper than OEM to correct their 'modification'...so if you price it right it should go to happy new owner.

Not sure what to tell you on price...but I'm sure there will a few that will chime in and let you know what a fair price should be :ltr:

I have Memphis Lowers on my bike. They came with the bike and I've never had them off so I occasionally...okay, always...forget to mention that part when doing reviews (especially since this is my first review)...:) From what I've read they are definitely a key componet in cleaning up your air space.

The Dragon was my second choice because of the reviews on it...I just didn't care for the way it swept back. The Klockwerks is much shorter and appears to have the same wind protection. This shield may work for you because the air was pretty clean when I poked my head up over the shield. Can't explain why but it seemed pretty close to how it felt when I sat normally (at least at 55 mph). Maybe your Vic dealer will have one that they will put on your bike to try before you buy...I read on another post that Klockwerks has offered this on some of there other products.

Hope you figure out a good set-up...:cool: RR

No way you could be too big for this bike...I've met a couple of guys your height and better and they've figured out a wind management set-up that works...you just have to send the question out to the whole forum and the 'giant riders' on here will chime in!

About the flip at the top of the shield. You mentioned it wasn't much. On the 13" 7Jurock I'm currently using; I put a 1/4" rubber spacer under the shield at the top mounts. It moved the air flow at 80 mph a good 2" higher so a little goes a long way on the angle of the shield.

I'm waiting on the one I ordered too along with a bunch of other goodies. :D I spent way too much money but since this is my keeper bike; I think it's worth it.

For this test I just lifted my head to different levels above the shield. I'll try the hand test to give you a better idea of wind. It might be Monday before I can test it...I have some other commitments my wife says I must complete this weekend. :mad:

The shield is 11" from the top of the indent (where the air comes in at the bottom of the shield) to the top of the shield. Basically, if you measure just the plastic right in the middle of the shield it measures around 11 inches.

I hadn't thought of using spacers but that makes sense. I don't think you'll need them once you put this on if you're around 5'10" or so...but then again, I'm not too picky about wind, just the slapping you get from buffeting.

I know what you mean about this bike being a keeper...I love the way it rides and touring two-up is so much nicer on this bike versus the others we've tried.

On another note...got caught in a real nasty rain and wind storm on the ride home. About 30 minutes of rain pounding me from the left with gusts strong enough to push me around my lane like I was riding a scooter! Even with the heavy cross-wind I didn't notice any buffeting...of course the sound may have been drowned out by the pelting rain. ;)

We're planning a ride to Arkansas in October to see the colors and check out the highly acclaimed routes around Hot Springs...now that's a ride report I look forward to posting! :D

Can't see it real good but from what I do see I have a windshield that the dealer put on my bike that looks a lot like yours. After I got the bike I had to do something IMMEDIATELY because of the wind and buffeting. I got my shield and also added the front lowers, which I think did as much if not more to reduce the buffeting. But I still get a little at higher speeds and I sure would like to eliminate it. Don't even know the brand of my shield; I think they called it a "flip". Anyway, can you tell me how tall your shield is from the center top of the opening. Thanks in advance.

It depends on when you bought your bike but this Klockwerks shield has only been available (to dealers) for about a month and a half (they were rolled out right before Sturgis this year) so if you bought your bike longer ago then that you most likely have the "Ness Flip" which was the only flip available prior to that time. BOTH measure 11" from the gap so the measurement won't tell you which screen you have.

If you see the earlier pictures in this thread you can see that the new ones have a Klockwerks logo. if you don't have the logo, you have a Ness Flip

Backup review

Just received my Klockwerks Flip today. Here are a few pics and my observations after a quick bike night. In one of the following pictures you will notice that the 11" Klockwerks screen is under the stock 9" version. The in the dark pics show the sight line from my head position. That bush is about 5 feet in front of me so it's not in my sight line. The blue reflection is from the dash lights and "just happens" to show up right where the old screen used to end (2" short of this one).

In normal riding the new screen "feels" like it's about the same height as my old screen and it's well below my sight line. I noticed the reduction in wind off the screen immediately. Interstate traffic further emphasized that head buffeting from wind at 70MPH was basically eliminated. Of course, wind coming from below the fairing was not restricted but the difference in screens was significant. My old 9" factory screen is now available for sale. Message me if anyone is interested in it.

In the past I could "stick my head into the wind stream" @ 70MPH but in order to do it with this screen, I have to extend unnaturally up about 5 inches in order to get that same airstream hitting my head. Taking the bike up to 80MPH exhibited that same wind stream reduces but I still have to raise an unnatural 3" in order to get into the wind stream. Even though I am 5'10", my torso (butt to top of head) is similar to most guys that are 6-foot (I have short legs, a 29" inseam). This tells me that a 6"3 guy would probably like this screen but guys over that height may want to consider going for one of the touring screens.

Great review dude! You explained about everything we all would ask. Only one question; do you look thru shield while riding or over it? I like looking over and I don't want to be looking thru the distortion unless riding in rain or something.

Grant...thanks for the kind words...now to answer your question.

I look over the shield...to look through it I'd have to do a major slouch job. The shield hits me around the lower chin/throat area. It does an awesome job of throwing the air up and over my head. I can open my palm and put my hand on top of my helmet (looks like I'm trying to give myself antlers) and then raise it an inch or two before I hit full force wind.

I'm sold on this shield...the distortion area isn't in my field of view...optics are great when I do look through the shield (like in parking lots)...looks great...and has a minimalist (as much as any decent shield anyway) look. Highly recommend this shield...if you get one tells us your thoughts so I don't look like I'm getting paid by Klockwerks for a review. :ltr:

What about two up?
I bought a touring shield because my wife felt she was pushing the wind with her shoulders and face. Not so much now, but I'd like some of my cool points back.
