Greetings all. I've been lurking for some time now waiting for me to make up my mind on what new bike to buy. Obviously since I'm writing on this forum, the Victory is the choice. XC to be exact.

Before I can purchase the new toy, I need to sell my current bike, which is a VSTAR 950. To get the most out of it I'm looking to sell it myself. My question is about letting someone test ride it. They must have a motorcycle endorsement, but what else can I do to protect myself?

Has anyone sold a bike that can give me some pointers?

When selling a bike my rule has always been cash in hand before they ride. Its not a promise to buy the bike but security for you if they wreck it. it's the ole" you break it, you bought it" motto.
I understand its hard to expect someone to make the purchase without a test ride.....I know I would never buy without a test. So, with the risk on you by handing over the keys, ask for something in return. Although I've never done it maybe you can write up a small "contract" stating you will hold the money as insurance until the completion of the test ride. It is NOT a promise to purchase but merely collateral?
Also maybe check with your insurance carrier as you may not be covered for something if they caused harm or damage to persons/property. Just a thought.

Good luck on the sale and congrats on the decision to buy a Vic....you won't be dissapointed.

Thanks. All good points.

I am planning on calling my insurance tomorrow. Writing a contract is a good idea, and holding some funds is a great idea. At least I have some collateral and something in writing.

I have been agonizing over what to buy. I narrowed it down to the Victory XC or HD streetglide based on the functionality and type of riding I want to do. Without ever riding one it all came down to price and the question was... is the HD $3000 better than a XC? $3000 is about the price difference between the 2. The answer, just looking on paper, is NO!

Most state laws require insurance companies to cover anyone you give permission to operate the vehicle and if you have full coverage insurance on the VSTAR the most you would be out is the deductable. That person you turn away because they didn't meet your ride requirements might just well be the person that would have bought it on spot if you would have let them. I also agree with sofakingblue, the XC might be priced $3000 below the SG but is probably $3000 BETTER bike.

You read his post backwards. He stated that the SG was NOT worth the $3+ needed for the RG. As to comparisons on the two, the OP can look up my "Cross Country vx. Road Glide" comparison thread. I was actually able to get the price of the SG closer to $2K more than the XC but IMHO, the XC was/is still the better bike. My thread covers a multitude of factors so I think it's still a good read for anyone balancing these bikes.

PS - I went with the Ness XC for obvious reasons (once you read my thread).

I recently sold a bike, and my insurance company said that as long as the person taking the test ride had a motorcycle endorsement, and had permission from me I was covered.

Friend of mine let a guy try out his Suzuki GSX b4 buying. He never came back.

Insurance tried to claim that since he gave permission, they didn't have to pay. After a long hassle they finally did.

Best rule: No cash, no ride.
Second rule: Meet at a public place, preferably your bank. Hold the cash inside the bank until he returns. Conduct business inside the bank, where you have a notary and other conveniences. Deposit the money before you leave.

Many people have been ripped off after a sale.

I carry a pistol Whenever someone unknown comes with the intention of cash changing hands. Can never be sure lot of crazies out there maybe I am one of them.

I'm paranoid enough about letting people drive my car!!! I can't imagine letting someone ride my bike...lol...
Even with all the legal stuff covered it would be the emotional "detachment" that would be tough to get past! Lol...

Thats pretty good, insurances companies will try to worm out of paying a dime... they rate right up there with politicians and ambulance chasers. lol

at one point i was considering selling my bike to get a new one. thanks for the info

dbrock950: I'm in almost the exact same position as you. I'm picking up my new Jackpot in about a week and then will need to sell my VSTAR 950. I have been wondering the same thing about whether or not to allow test rides. I plan on following the advise of no test ride unless the buyer is ready to buy & willing to put cash in my hands in advance.

This is my first post here. But I interested in a XC or VV soon. If/when I sell my current ride I am going to take his/her pic and I do want a copy of there drivers licence, or have them bring a copy.
I belong to many different motorcycle forums and this question does come up from time to time

Well, I might not get the chance to experience letting a potential buyer test ride my bike. The sun has finally come out (albeit for only a couple of days :mad: ) and I'm getting the serious itch to get my new ride.

Tomorrow I'm heading out to the Vic dealer. I've drooled long enough. Time to take the plunge.... 2011 XC. What color? I have no idea. VSTAR is going to have to a trade in.

Just to make sure... I stopped by the Harley dealer today and questioned the salesperson about the bike that is comparable to the XC, which is the Street Glide. The entire time I could not get over the price... $23459 for a new street glide. Except for the throttle by wire and ABS brakes, this bike has the same if not less functions than the XC for... $5000 more!!! I get the whole Harley image thing, but there has to be a point where common sense takes over.
