Interesting indeed Dill. I interact with people from the UAE every once in a while because of work. They have this tendency to look down upon those in the Service industry jobs. Really made me wonder why, but I never felt the need to ask, but I see it now. How'd you stumble upon that article?

I think I was on yahoo and came across LifeDaily link it had some images which are the ones I included. I can't find the original link though.

The link I have is one googled... doesn't make me want to live there however, if I had plenty of $$, I'd like to be able to visit. The pics I've seen are mind blowing.

Been there and believe me- with our lifestyles now we could not cope living there- 6 months of the year its too hot to ride, and anyway ride where? Straight lines with sand on the road? No thanks. Most neighbouring countries are unstable and dangerous. War everywhere. And soon, nucs nearby!

That is one part of the world you want to stay well away from.

Seems like I recently read about a British guy was arrested for having a bottle of booze. Apparently a very serious offense there.

As a rider; I don't think I'd like it very much there but as someone making a living, it could be an opportunity to sock away some good money for a house or a toy later on.

If you read the link, this is not a place you would want to call home for very long.

You have to be very courageous just going to work, school, or the store. Not because of crime which is virtually zero, but due to the traffic and the way everyone drives.

I'd only want to go for the awe factor because I'm sure it is beautiful.

I've not been to Dubai but I was in Abu Dhabi (neighboring Emirate in the UAE) on business for a week several years ago. It was not really very beautiful. There were some gorgeous mosques some nice looking hotels, some attractive office buildings, and a nice looking convention center (in which I spent much of my time) but other than that, the natural scenery was ugly sand stretching for what seemed like forever.

I stayed in a large hotel catering to international guests which contained several bars that served alcohol. Interestingly, the international hotels were very popular with the actual UAE citizens mostly because these hotels had alcohol and women in western clothing.

G'day,

Vinish

My last boss just moved there about 2 months ago. Before he left, he told me that when he had to come back stateside to sell his belongings, he did not want to get on the plane, even though it was only for 10 days. He and I discussed some of the cultural differences. I heard enough to say "No thanks, I'm good here", but he seemed to be ready for the new adventure in his life.

Beautiful in a crazy artificial way- it wasn't even there 50 years ago!

But Vegas is way better, in so many ways........

Honestly I just dont get why people would go there, even as a stop over while flying long routes as happens alot from Australia- there are so many nicer places and its so artificial and the fact it's all OUR oil money that's paid for it- Nah, I'll pass thanks!

Dubai hmmm you could write a book about expatriates discrimination .... Been to all these county's so so many times .... Not a happy place if you look further then your nose ....

A sample ....

Norwegian woman was originally found “guilty” for getting raped. (Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23404042)

In Dubai, a Norwegian woman was arrested on adultery charges for reporting her rape. She was lucky to only be sentenced to 16 months, rather than to death. However, after a media firestorm, she was pardoned. Had it not been for this, she would have served time in prison, adding insult to injury after being raped.

Just think what you would do if your background was a tribal one living off of the land and had no experience in dealing with money. All of a sudden you have more money coming in every month than you know what to do with. So much that the longer you hold on to it the less it's worth. Pretty much like some new rock star or sports playing kid who just got into the majors and signed a contract for an outrageous amount of money. Or winning a huge lottery. Your're going to spend foolishly.

Also take into account their class system where many think their blood is better than others, any others, and money just magnifies the situation. Workers are treated like slaves and because of the oil and money, the rest of the world permits it.

And don't even get me started on what influence all that money has in a place where religion has a major influence on the people and their government. I'm sure we all know. Again, foreign governments permit it because of the oil.

When the oil is gone and the foreign governments have no interest in this part of the world they will revert back to their tribal existence. By then though they will have bought up and live in different parts of the world and taken their beliefs with them.

...There were a couple of other paragraphs here that I erased. I listed some of the problems being encountered in Europe and elsewhere with some of the people, both rich and poor, from Asia. And there are so many problems. Some readers might have considered it slightly racist so I removed it all. The troubles on a society surrounding immigration, social programs, multiculturalism and what happens when political correctness prevails is all there for the looking.

For the most part, wide expanses of ocean have limited the effects on some parts of the world. But it has begun.

This is America!

The problems of the world have always existed as you describe and they will always be with us... we are simply much more aware due to technology.

I'll be riding down some less traveled road in the freaking middle of nowhere and miles and miles away from the nearest store or gas station. I'll see a home and I'll think, those folks are either really backward people or very very smart people.

I have no illusions about living somewhere that looks like this side of heaven on the outside but is just as dirty on the inside as every other place on this spinning globe.
