OK...very good thread on here about "What you should take on a trip" and some very good answers and tips. Excellent post!

But here's one that I have wondered about with every NEW bike that I have owned. In fact, I have asked that my "dealer" at the time GO OVER THE BIKE for any issues and/or adjustments and lubes the bike can use...in other words, "CHECK MY BIKE OVER FOR ANYTHING".

So for the Victory I have as of yet, NOT DONE THAT...but I am going on my 3rd season and I would like to know the things (both OBVIOUS and NOT SO obvious) that you would do either in the spring or just before a LONG TRIP is planned.

What are the "trouble spots"...things like loose bolts or screws to check, lube areas, noise issues, WORN areas, maintenance must do's, etc.

How about it...what do YOU do?

I mostly do basic stuff...and probably skip a lot of stuff that SHOULD be done.

-Check tire pressure and inspect tires for wear or damage
-Check drive belt for wear
-Check oil
-Fill gas tank :p

That's really about it. I make sure to service the bikes if they're due before we leave. We usually get 'em cleaned up too. No reason for bugs to die on a dirty windshield.

However, based on experience, I would say anything you've worked on in recent weeks should be double-checked. Lost a chin-fairing bolt last year. Might be you're more competent than me tho :D

Each winter I go through my bike thoroughly and ensure everything is in tip-top shape. After that, a thorough visual inspection each time I wash it, checking this and that and fixing/adjusting as needed.

This way, I pretty much know that about all I need to do before a trip is check tires, air pressure, oil level, and fill the tank. Basics such as my tools, rain gear, first aid kit are always in the bike.

For long runs (Trip) I go over the whole bike several months out. anything that is 50% worn or more gets replaced.
Tires
Brakes
cables
plugs
Wires

I ask the shop to go thru the bike and change the brake fluid, clutch fluid, and do a general look around the bike to make sure I have not left anything out and they have a standing orders that if it looks suspect replace it. ( yes I trust the shop).

30 Days out I change the the oil and clean the Air filter, and a good clean and wax. Before going I put a 1000 or 2 miles on the bike to make sure that all is working as advertised. If there is going to be a problem it will be with what has just been done 90% of the time.
