Hey guys and gals,

I own a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic. I am looking to upgrade to a larger bike. I have been comparing the Yamaha Strat Deluxe and the Cross Country. I really don't know a lot of history about the Victory bikes. Can anyone give me some history and how well they hold up.

Victory hasn't been around long but it has a awesome track record. Read through the forums and you'll find a few people have had problems; read through forums for any brand and you'll find that they have problems too -- the difference is their problems are normally worse. Most Victory dealerships will tell you they've never had a bike in service for a failed engine. The only time they've opened engines is to put in larger pistons. This may sound like a story but it is entirely true.

Read the comparisons between the Stratoliner Deluxe and the Cross Country. The Stratoliner won in power but lost in every other category. I went through the same research; I looked hard at the Stratoliner too -- it just could not compete with Victory. My situation may have been different, I wanted a bike I could carry my wife around on. The Stratoliners drivers seat was uncomfortable, the passenger seat was like sitting on a bandaid, the suspension was terrible, the bags were way too small for trips, and it was a beast to stand up. I was also confused about where Yamaha decided to put the key -- why would they stick it in a hole in the fairing?

I was set to buy a Cross County but decided that I didn't have much use for a stereo. I chose a Cross Roads instead and have zero regrets.

Research hard and choose well; don't set yourself up for disappointment! I highly recommend test riding everything you are considering buying, don't just rely on looks, price, or other peoples opinions.

My first bike was an '06 Vulcan 900 Classic, the reason I bought it was that it felt like it was "custom" made for my size. Low seat height, comfy bars, great handling, etc. When it was time to upgrade, I looked at several other makes and couldn't find the same fit.
Until I looked at Victory. The Vics are quality built, modern technology most of all, but at least with the Kingpin, I found the same ergonomic setup that I had in the Kaw. Low seat height, comfy bars, low center of gravity, handles great with plenty of "go" when you need it.
Find yourself a dealership and go visit and take a ride. Yes...they will encourage you to take a test ride on a new bike! Depending on the model, you may be able to find a new '09 or '10 and save some $$$

I too 'moved up' from a Kawasaki Custom 900....but I purchased a Victory Vegas 8ball... Love it, would never turn back.

I am 5'6" and the Kawa fit me well...I know that the Kawa was only 550 pounds or so and was a bit hesitant about seat height as well as poundage when moving to another bike. My Vic has a low seat...and doesn't weigh that much so it fit in all respects.

I know before I bought the Kawa I thought long and hard at a Victory then but didn't just want a 100ci engine...since I hadn't been riding a bike in 30 years and returned to it. But I didn't find that much of a difference to be honest and should have bought the Vic earlier.

I looked at a Harley Fat Boy lo and this victory. After riding them and looking at em, the Vic won out. I love the styling...everyone looks at it. The Harley, well...one would hate to say it now but honestly, the Harley has become the 'norm', right? It is just a Harley, nothing more. But the Vic has styling and appeal as well as it just appears to be a better engineered bike all around. Also, drive a Harley and drive a Vic..you will see a difference.

You won't go wrong.... excellent service at the dealers, a better bike, it costs less....(than a Harley...although I see you are looking at a yamaha).

I love the idea that it is US made too...I wanted that but that is just me.

Kawi to Vic

The majority of my time riding has been on the medium "naked bikes," but in 09 I entered into the cruiser world via a Vulcan 1700 Classic.

I rode the Kawi for a year, and then traded it in for a Ducati Monster - totaled the Ducati last summer, and now I have a cruiser again, my 05 Hammer.

The Star cruisers are very nice, just as the Vulcans are very nice, but for me there is a distinctly different feel to an American bike, and especially the Victory bikes - and this time around I wanted an American motorcycle, because it would offer an experience I have not had before.

It really is all about what looks and feels good to each rider, and about how and where they like to ride, and the performance, handling and such that they desire - for me I deeply enjoy the "muscle cruisers." The look, the feel, the performance and handling, suits me very well.

I'd have to agree with what's been said, more than just looking at bikes, it is better to test ride them and try them out. Likewise, it is good to take one's time until one finds the bike they really like.

I've ridden a lot of different bikes over the years but I have to say that I'm really enjoying my Victory - I'm pretty impressed with my bike and am finding it to be an awesome machine. From everything I've heard it should also be very dependable.

Some disagreement with an above post. I own a Cross Country. I traded a Roadliner that I owned for three years for the XC. The Roadliner has wonderful suspension but you need a $750 after market Ultimate Seat to enjoy it. If you are not very long armed you will need Baron Rizers. Strato Deluxe fairing is hollow/empty. No radio or gages. You will need to look at your tank. Both bikes have great engineering but the Cross country is fully gaged. Better dollar value in the Cross bikes.

I have a 900 custom and love it. i also have a cross roads. The difference in them is night and day. I love the cross roads so much more every day it is a fantastic bike! Two of my buddies and i went to the ride and compare deal today 2 Harleys and 2 victorys. dyna vs. Vegas, Street Glide vs. Cross Country. No comparison Victory is so much better. I do like the new trans better than mine but its just fine. Oh and by the way, I will be getting a jackpot someday to replace the 900 custom! omg what a difference!!!!! my02

I empathize with you, as I had concerns about the dependability of Victorys. So like you, I went on the forums to see what problems were being discussed and found NONE, NOTHING, NADA. Victory mechanics must be today's Maytag repairman. Oh, I did see one problem being discussed; there are some who don't like the way the gas cap is hinged because they want to fuel up while sitting on the bike. Easy fix - fuel it off the bike. I came from the world of touring rigs, not cruisers (hated cruisers) but in my mid 70s needed a lower seat and CG. So glad Victory came out with the Cross bikes when the did. Now go out and get a test ride. If that doesn't convince you, nothing will. thumb up

I know your not looking at a harley but this does give some in site to the vic's motor

Thanks for all the input. I will test drive and make a final decision. I am sold on the victory on paper but need to put the bike to a riding test. Don't think I will be disappointed.

I gaaarnteee you will not be disappointed. My test ride involved some really twisty (not curvy) roads. That bike made a convert of this long time cruiser hater. Another thing I will promise you: The more you ride it, the more you will like it. I have owned many bikes in my 59 years of riding, but I have never been so smitten on one as my XR. Be sure to have your check book along with you.

If you live where the temperatures get below 70 degrees, the lower wind deflectors are a must do. They also keep rain and bugs off your legs. While on the subject of add ons: when bargaining the price, show the dealer a written list of all you want on the bike. That way, everything gets discounted along with the shop time. Put off non essentials for future purchase. Good luck and tell us how it all goes, cheers

It's true, Victory bikes are addictive - they ought to come with a warning label! As soon as I got on a test rode mine, it was a done deal. It's also true, the more you ride, the more the love affair deepens - once bitten, and that's it. It's just a matter of finding the model and look that suits you.

I test Rode a Harley and it was Agricultural in comparison to the Victory. The Triumph was better. But the Victory just hit the spot for me. So I got a new UK spec 2011 Vegas 8-Ball and it is just the business. I didn't look at any of the Jap stuff because they seem to be copying Harley and often don't put their name to their Cruisers. That said a lot to me.

The Victory's styling and build quality was just spot on....

As the Triumphs are build just up the road from me in the UK, 24 miles. It did not go down to well with the Triumph Dealer when he didn't get his sale. The Triumph Thunderbird felt to heavy in comparison to the Victory's low weight distribution. The Triumph Speedmaster and America did not have enough guts for my liking.

But it is what ever floats your boat. I wanted the best bike, most styled bike with good reliability. The Triumphs were very close but the Victory stole the show for me.

Oy! Cheers to ya and yer choice of the best Yankee bike made. I'll lift a stout to ya next time I'm at the Horse Brass Pub...so Brit that my ex pat friends get homesick. I'll be having bangers and mash with that beer. Seriously, I'm a first time Victory buyer too and to say I'm favorably impressed is an understatement. Many happy miles Snapper. The wife and I have Jolly Ole England on the top our list of must see places. Been to the Alps and the countries contiguous to them - on motorcycle, of course. Probably will do England by car - too many wet scenes in the Midsommer Mysteries and The Two Fat Ladies series. cheers

If ever you want some advice on where to go and what to see when you come touring in the UK, drop me a line and I will give you some help and advice.

For me the West Coast of Scotland, Parts of Wales and its mix if inland and coast, London for the sight seeing are the biggest touring musts...

you will not be disappointed mate,I traded in a fazer for a vegas 8 ball, true the riding style is totally different,got 1000 miles on it now and really feeling at home with it,smooth ride,lovely sound (2-1 st 1) and 50+ mpg,needs a small screen for distance riding though and a clock would be nice,other than that no regrets at all.

One thing that's a little puzzling is that only the touring model comes with ABS brakes. Their other models should come with ABS brakes, after all, we're talking about an issue that pertains to life and death. To be fair the same thing criticism can be directed at several other manufacturers. I don't know what the designers are waiting for. Does anyone? ABS brakes are far superior and christ we are talking about a persons safety for pete's sake. Go to Youtube and you'll find some really good videos that demonstrate just how advantageous ABS brakes are in a panic-stop, hold on for your dear life situation.
