Guys I have a question. I put plexiglass lowers on the forks. I am getting a lot of engine heat on my legs. Do the lowers cause air to not flow over the engine correctly and instead cause engine heat to rise up and cook our legs? The hot air is definately coming from the engine.

Really long review, sorry.

Well John from JTD called today and told me that he was ready to install a test set of the hard lowers that we have all been waiting on. Today was the third time that John had worked with his product on my bike. We started months ago by making a card board cut out.

Clips and other fasteners in hand he went about his install. Using the bolt at the bottom of the forged bars and the two bolts at the top he installed a clip in each location. He then installed a third clip in the highway peg threaded receiver on the inside of the bars. Then the lowers are installed onto the clips and bolted into place with locking nut. It took 15 minutes. Not bad for his first official fitment.

The lowers are going to come unassembled to ease the process of painting. The storage box has a locking lid and is adhered to the lower. Very simple and the adhesive will be included with the kit. With the speaker option the locking lid will not be utilized and the 4 x 6 Polk Audio marine speakers will be installed in its place. They fit, as my employees says, like a finger in a butt.

More about these lowers later let’s get to the ride. After the install John headed out saying that if I ended up running to the dealership about 40 miles away, which is near his house to let him know and he would meet me there. Two hours later I called John and told him that I was on my way. The lowers, as many of you have seen are concaved shaped, have an open vent similar to that seen on a F1 race car on the outside and an air directing vent near the inside. The storage compartment is straddled by these vents.

The day was perfect for my test 97 degrees and windy. I headed out riding on in town roads, county roads and on the expressway. I rode with the vents at complete open, half closed and completely closed. I even rode with one open and one closed. I was able to open and closed the vents while underway which I don’t think that they are designed to do.

Here are my observations:

With the vents closed and heated grips your riding season is going to be extended. There is no air reaching your lower body. I mean none. Like I said it was 97 and certainly too warm to ride that way for too long. But in March or even February they will be amazingly comfortable.

With the vents completely open the wind from the vents completely ventilated my legs from the knees down causing my jeans to flap wildly similar to riding without and lowers installed.

With the vents half way open a gentle breeze flowed across my legs from the knees down but my jeans were not flapping wildly more like a gentle waving flag on a pole. I believe that you would have dry feet in this position in a rain storm.

Heat? I noticed warmth from behind my knees and the underside of my thighs to where the seat comes into play. It is not hot just warmth that is not there when there are no lowers in play. My legs from the knees down completely block the air from going behind them. The air coming thought he vents splashed across my lower legs, continued across the area where the passenger floor boards are when they are in the down position and exit around the bags. The stream of air is defined and directional as there is a void of air further out from you legs behind the storage box/speaker location until you reach the F1 vent where another defined and completely direction blast of air travels completely away and around the bike.

This brings me to the really incredible characteristic of these lowers. I have only mentioned the air from my knees down because that is the only place that there is an air stream that is definable. From my knees to my waist my jeans laid flat. There is a noticeable lack of air across the top of my legs that was there when I took my bike to the shop earlier in the day. In fact there is no longer a blast of air on my chest either. I felt around the tank area as I rode and above the tank the air is still. On the sides of the tank a stream of air can be found at a dimension of approximately 1.5” away. Inside that the dimension the air is still. This stream of air follows the tank to its widest dimension and then continued out and around my waist. Air no longer follows the tank and dumped air into my lap and up my chest

For most of my ride today I wore a tour master mesh jacket and a full faced shoei helmet. I am just less than 6’1”tall, have a 32 inseam and weight 225 pounds. I have a 13” klocks flip windshield. I have not been bothered by the buffeting as much as others. But I can tell you that what I experienced today was better. In fact it was gobs better. Prior to the install I could move my knees away from the tank and blast air onto my chest and create some buffeting. I could not do that after these lowers were installed. There is no air to redirect in this fashion. Like I said before the streams of air moving through these lowers are defined and completely directional.

I arrived at the dealership and John was waiting for me outside. He was anxious for my report. I have now put 50 miles on the lowers at speeds up 90 mph. The first thing that I told him was “The aerodynamics of these lowers are brilliant” and they are. I went on to say that I was playing with semi’s trying to get pushed around by turbulence and found my self disappointed at the minor pushes that I got. I was waiting for the feeling I get when my soft lowers are in place. I guess the best way to describe that feeling is pushing an open umbrella into the wind. It never happened. John thought that I was #$%@ting him so I told him that the key is in it take it for a spin. He returned 20 minutes later with a #$%@ eating grin on his face. His comment “that is amazing. I never dreamed that they would perform like this.”

Guys I have no qualms telling you if something sucks donkey dick. I have nothing invested into this project with the exception of letting John use my bike as a lab rat. These things are unreal. I truly believe that the bike is more aerodynamic and better behaved than without them. My 85 mph ride home into the 20-25 mph head wind was completely uneventful in fact I forgot about the head wind entirely. The bike simply cut the air. It has to be something to do with the way that the F1 vent works.

Ok the XC buffeting issue that many, especially shorter than me riders complain about. Are these lowers the holy grail of buffet relief. Well I was determined to find out. The worst experience I had with my bike and buffeting was at the SE meet last year and our ride for dinner. I decided to wear my half helmet. I had left my riding sunglasses up in my room so just decided that I would wear my regular eye glasses. During that ride, once I got above 55 mph my glasses were blowing off my face and the wind behind them were watering my eyes so badly that I could not seen. So I tried that set up tonight, with the same glasses, and the same half helmet. Let me just say, at 70 mph the amount of wind that I was getting in my eyes was equivalent to me waving my hand in front of my face. I could have ridden all day at that speed with that setup. I also noticed that my tee shirt was not flapping behind me. The back of my shirt was laying flat, my shoulders were in the wind and the front of my shirt was actually slightly creased and doing the gentle flag flap toward the windshield. I then wondered if I could light a cigarette while riding. I set the cruise @40 mph, cupped my hands and tried to light a bic lighter leaning slightly down toward the tank. I could not. I now think that I could if I cupped my hands in the opposite direction. I normally don’t smoke when I ride but I wondered what I could figure if I did. Interesting enough the ashes when flicked from near my mouth or at my chest level traveled forward toward the windshield and then went around the rear view mirrors and then back and away from the bike. The lowers are actually creating a very slight negative pressure in front of the rider. But I could not feel it; in fact I told John that I considered the air between me and the windshield to be completely neutral and almost still. So do these fix the buffeting issue, you’ll have to be the judge but I think that they are going to shock a bunch of people.

The stereo is much louder and with the volume at level 12 with a half helmet is almost too loud. At 85 mph with a full faced helmet into a 25 mph head wind I could hear ever lyric clearly at that level.

I am not trying to blow smoke up anyone’s ass here. I was expecting to get baked and blown all over the road. It didn’t happen. In fact, it was better than it would have been with no lowers at all. John described it as a bullet cutting through the air. I agree. I only have about 125 miles on these things and I will update as I get some more miles on them. I also plan on shooting a go pro video. Once it rains, I will be in it. Yes I have picture but I will have to up load them from my office tomorrow.

great read thanks for the info. Mine are on order, just waiting for them to come in. My biggest concern was the aerodynamics and if they would cut thru the air with a smooth ride or push thru the air with a turbulent ride. You've answered that. Cant wait to ut them on!!

My thanks also for the review post. Everything I've read so far about these lowers sounds awesome.

I managed to get in on the pre-oder a couple days ago, so I'm still a few weeks away from experiencing them myself.

Can't wait to hear reports from a few more people who have ordered them already.

I currently have Vic fork lowers and some home made lexan lowers in the forged bars similar to Cee Flectors and that does a decent job of wind management, but sounds like these lowers will be even better. I'm hoping to be able to remove the fork lowers as I think the bike would look even better without them.

I started the JTD posts and sent a lot of emails while never really considering buying a set. After reading the reviews I may have to order a set once my XR gets out of the shop!

AMMO JTD needs to give you a huge discount. I think he got alot of customers due to you due diligence in getting info out to the different bds. I for one would probably not be getting the lowers had it not been for your updates.

If I do decide to order I'll do it via an email asking how orders are coming and sneak in a question about pricing. I don't expect anything but it's tough to pass up a good deal when you know it's a good product.

I hope they work out well for you and hope you can get some pics up once they're installed. If so try to get angles that were missed on other photos.

I seem to understand I have to get them painted, and i presume the factory fairing mounted wind deflectors won't work, since they hit the forged bars (these deflectors are actually important).

Factory lowers. all inclusive are about $1200 (painted, and including the round crash bars and wind vents) from Honda Toledo. I would presume these are quite a bit less??
