I've been a Kawasaki Vulcan guy forever. Never had any problems and one of the many things I like about the bikes is there is next to no maintenance other than air in the tires and oil. Anyhow thinking seriously about the 2012 Victory Cross Country. Any insights into what it takes to keep them running? Does it require many trips to the dealer like our Harley friends? I'm good with a hammer but that is about it. Any other opinions about the Victory would also be appreciated.

I traded my vulcan on a cross country- pretty much the same deal on maintenance.
If you don't mind me asking, what Vulcan did you have and how does the Cross Country compare? You're the perfect guy to ask!

I have the Vulcan 1700 Voyager abs. Up for sale. I now own an 11 Cross country

I can tell you that the CC is easier to ride. Has better handling, Lighter steering, and more power. The CC sits me lower to the ground (5'8"). Two up riding is better on the CC as well. The CC is more controllable with my wife on the back and she has more room to slide around back there. I have the optional lock and ride trunk for the long haul and pass back rest for local rides. I like this versatility about the bike. Expensive options but worth it.

The Vulcan is a good bike and I did enjoy it. however the drop dead good looks of the victory won me over not to mention the great deal I got on an 11 model (last one). Thats the only reason I made the move otherwise I was waitin till I sold the Vulcan and would have to settle for a 12 model.

The Vulcan did have ABS which saved my hide a few times and the wind and rain protection was superb compared to the Vic. Now Vic has the Tour. The Vulcan had more guages on the dash and 1 1/4" handle bar that was pretty cool. All in all the vulcan looked old school compared to the more modern style of the CC. Better lookin wheels and better tires on the CC. I had to change the seat on the Vulcan to a Mustang $639 and install risers to get the bike to fit me.


The Victory won me over the Harley streetglide and road glide as well. Price and again overall ergonomics was the factor there.
The Cross country is tough to beat and it is AMERICAN!! thumb up

Thanks for all the info Slickvic! I've had four Vulcans and loved them all. Most recent I just bought in May, the new Vaquero. Gorgeous bike in my opinion but.....it is a beast at close to 850 pounds and top heavy. One time I was in a dirt parking lot and almost dropped it. I was in that awkward position where it wasn't on the ground but I couldn't get it upright. Luckily my wife just came back from a hike and helped me get it all the way up. I sat on the CC and it just pops right up from the kick stand. I'll lose a couple grand if I go for it but the low center of gravity and the 2012's all have ABS seems worth it. I haven't taken one on a test ride yet. I won't be getting another bike for a long time for sure. Just have to convince the wife that everyone is entitled to one mistake! cheers Thanks so much for all the info.

Sorry -didn't answer the whole question. 2008 vn 900 classic lt. I needed a bike that my feet could set flat on the ground and when I bought the 900 it fit nice. I thought it would of had a little more power being a rider of some old 900 kawasakis from the 70's. Was way wrong on that. Shopped bikes from around october of 2010 and ran across a vic dealer when I was in Austin texas. Sat on the cross country and was very impessed. Researched them and even asked a buddy of mine that has his own bike mechanics shop. Works on mostly harleys.He told me I could not go wrong buying a vic. Well bought a cross country in april 2011 and 9000 miles later I am very happy with it. A few wind management issues on this bike but there are many options for taking care of that. As far as maintenance pretty easy to take care of. As far as going from the 900 to the larger bike-no problem.

No problem my man. The vaquero is gonna be hard to give up but like myself you will get over it pretty quick. Your wife hopefully will also.

Well one saturday I pulled in the Driveway with mine and that was one of the toughest explanations i've ever had to make. My wife knew I was looking at them but she thought I was crazy and never satisfied. I could'nt loose the opportunity (discounted price) and just put my tail between my legs and rode it home. If looks could kill I would'nt be writing this today. I have more respect for my wife than this and love her more than anything but that was the longest weekend of my life Well as they say time heals and now she loves the Vic more than the Voyager.


You will love the Cross Country and if you are thinking of doing alot of 2 up and touring, you might as well go for the tour or save a few bucks and get the CC. Remember the option of "Lock n ride". It's sweet! Best of both worlds.

I have on order a set of D&D slip-ons and a Stage 1 down load. That will be the extent of my performance upgrades as this bike does perform well out of the box. I just gotta have the sound now to with it. A Clockwerks windshield is on now and made a noticable difference in upper wind management. I'm researching lower wind deflectors for the forged engine guards and pretty much decided on Bakers products. Other wise thats about it.
The voyager was very good at wind management and rain protection. IMO the best. That bike kept me warm and dry. The vic needs help with this but thats where the tour comes in.


I put alot into my Voyager to get it to perform and be comfy. Cobra tri-ovals fi2000r & Thunder air kit. You know about the mustang seat with backrest and the rest is just a bunch of Chrome stuff and a couple of different windshield heights smoked. Upgraded spkrs and an amp in the trunk fixed the sound system.

A 200 lb difference in the bikes was very noticeble also. You do have the difference in fairings. Frame mounted (Vulcan) and handlebar mounted CC. Unlike the Streetglide the CC is unbelievably light on the handlebars and out handles everything I've test ridden. Even though the cruise control pod and stereo pod looks cheap and after mkt on the CC it is still functional and simple as compared to the Vulcan and Harley. The Stereo is decent on the CC and if I upgrade anything it will be the front spkrs only to a 6.25 and a small amp. The trunk with spkrs is'nt on the bike enough to mess with it.

The only maintenance Ive ever had to do on the Vulcan was oil changes and after 2000 mi the Amsoil went in. I'm hoping for the same simple maintenance on the Vic although I do plan on staying with Victory oil.

Again good luck my man and remember sometimes it is better to ask for fogiveness than permission although I don't recommend taking that route. :D

Great story.....good news for me is my wife is starting to be okay with it. I tried selling it with the better balance, seat height and ABS. She basically just said 'It is your thing....I'm just resigned to it as long as I am a good husband.' I'm an okay husband :D
Anyhow hope to go for a test ride this week and if all works out....

Dealer here in California said it was Victory sponsored program and when December ended the offer would end because the dealership could not afford it by themselves. Not sure why you didn't get it, but worth asking I'd think.

Just FYI, I'm about ready to go for the CC so I double checked and Victory(Polaris) is doing the waranty. The offer it good until December 28. There is also an additional $250 off as well. You probably couldn't get that but I'd think you have an argument for the warranty. Good luck.

Went on my test ride today....all set but only thing that bothered me a little is guy told me you bring it in every 5000 miles for maintenance?! Hopefully that is just oil which I'll do myself? He said the 500 mile break in check is $300! Not sure I want to spend $300 every 5000 miles. Sounds like a Harley! Any opinions/comments?

The every 5,000 maintenance is oil, filter, and numerous other items to be inspected and lubed or adjusted as needed. Many people can do all of those things by themselves.

I took mine in for the first 500 mile break-in maintenance because that was more likely (I was guessing) to need a belt adjustment, and also I just wanted that one to be on the Vic dealer's records.

I plan to do oil changes myself. The dealer will get to tension the belt every time the rear tire is changed. I don't change my own tires.

Works for me. I will take it in for the 500 mile checkup and then do the rest (except tires) myself. unless it is some other major change. I guess I'll have to wait to get the owner's manual. Thanks for the reply man!
