Since I am still waiting on my slow a** painter to finish up a bike I started on several months ago. I decided to see what I could do on making some parts for my XC.
I am not going to use a luggage rack all the time. I prefer the looks with out 1 unless I need to carry something that will not fit in the saddle bags. Like weekend trips. So I decided to make 1 myself. No it will not have the great chrome that cycleops makes but it will look good enough to use.
I also took a look at cruise pegs that are available. I really did not see anything I would spend $$$ on. The floorboards are large as we all know. But on long rides like fuel up to fill up I like to be comfortable and be able to relocate my legs. I also do not like my feet/legs straight or my feet up like you see on most cruisers. That puts pressure on your hips and pelvis. I like have my heel on the FB with my feet slightly raised in a natural position and be able to put my feet on the cruise peg. In other words 3 positions that are usable with the same peg position.

I have a designed a mount using the kuryakyn iso pegs. Which will be adjustable and really easy to make. Or use a spare break pedal, the rubber part that I have laying around doing nothing. Almost anyone will be able to make it if they have something that will cut metal..
My last thought, I have started looking into a light mount. I really am trying to do something different here. After all the XC is different. I am wanting to stay away from a light bar look. Like you see so much on cruisers and HD's. I am doing this on a limited $$$ amount just to see what can be done and see how it looks. We are really limited on light buckets, just not much out there that is not costly.
Over all The light buckets and iso pegs will be the biggest expense on this project.
I have found some 3 inch light buckets that are really cool looking but they are pricey. I have found a set that is 3.5 inch that are $100 a pair that are thin but 55 watt bulbs. I do not like 55 watt bulbs. I like the xenon 27 watt true white bulbs. The produce as much light as a 55 watt.

Now that that is out of the way.

Even though I don't own an X bike I say, DO IT!! First off you will be unique and have the pride in knowing that YOU created what you have.

I hope you go through with it and post some pics please!!thumb up

Woo hoo! Okay, take the following with a grain of salt, as they're mostly random ideas spun as a first impression as I read your post:

1.) The rack... will it be an easy snap-on/off? If not, maybe that would be a nice challenge to add to your project.

2.) How neat would it be to somehow incorporate a light mount with the foot peg, so it becomes one dual purpose accessory? I know this sounds idiotic, but that's part of brainstorming.

3.) If the suggestion above (2.) doesn't get consideration, how about a light mount underneath the horizontal plane of the crash guards? This would give the light more height, and if the light is large enough, block more air in the leg area, again somewhat serving a dual purpose (for a more visual description, see images below).

I did purchase the pegs and brackets that mount to the inside of the forged hwy bars. My original complaint about them is that the brackets angle away from the bike so that the pegs slant the wrong way (for me at least). I found that when I angled the pags inward a bit and tightened the screws down I could get the right angle for the pegs, but then they won't fold up. The good thing about these pegs is that I have about four different positions I can rest my boots - heel on the fb and toe on the bracket, heel on the FB and foot in a somewhat natural position, arch of the foot on the pegs, ankle over the peg. The bracket is awfully close to the brake and gear shift levers tho I haven't really had a problem there. Has anyone installed the pegs that mount to the underside of the fbs?

Actually 1 & 2 of your ideas I have though of. 3 is a idea. The thumb nails you added are being considered. Except I am either wanting 3 or 3 1/2 inch lights so it will be in proportion of the bike. Placement is what I am trying to figure out. I have and will use the lower deflectors so the light would need to be more on the outward side. I only want the lights to contribute to the looks or should I say compliment the bike. So the 2 3/8 will be too small and the 4 1/2 being too large. When I add the cruise peg mounts I think your idea would contribute to the over all look and be rather easy to do.
Yes the luggage rack will be easy removable. Most likely I will use Memphis shades quick release that they for their windshield but larger to make it more sturdy. In fact this is the part I am working on in the design.
Got to remember I have a home shop so I have no milling machine. I have been bidding on a few from places that are closing. So far nothing I can afford or want to spend.
Some of the stuff my Grandson can make at tech school, like the gussets for the quick release.

I have been fabricating some of my parts for years. I specialize in making mounts that are not available and polishing: Like adding Floorboards to a bike that are not designed for floorboards.
Here are some sample that I have done

This is my VTX 1800 C which has the crobin beetle bags
AS you see I added the retro FB's with 1 of my moounts

I am taking this idea and making it more adjustable. I have not seen these in person, only in photos. By making the mount I will be able to add or subtract add angles or anything else that may be needed to have a good custom fit.
I have 2 ideas going with this right now and may very well make 2 sets to see which will work the best. The basic design will be the same except 1 will be using the Kury iso pegs that will fold up and give a little more adjustment where the other will have the peg itself rigid. The peg itself I will make and use brake pedal covers to add to the looks. If you look at the Honda VTX retro/HD ultra and others you will see it is a flat metal pedal with a cover. The cool part is it is just as easy to make to fit someone that is 5'7" or 6' 5" in other words they will be custom fitted to me for my height and inseam
That is how I do the Floorboard mounts. I make them to fit the rider. I am able to put any angle on the FB or raise/lower them.

Thanks for the idea

I've scaled down the lights, but I did not do so to reflect 3 or 3.5 inch lights - I just eye-balled them and reduced size a bit.

This is the placement I am thinking about.

I have to teach tomorrow but I may have time to cut some things out before having to get prepared.

I've thought about this placement as well but with the new LED lights; they don't need to be near this big. I'm sure everyone has seen the Clearwater "Glenda" lights by now. They even come in XC/XR colors to match. :)

The downside is the price.

These look interesting but I don't know how well they would work.

One of the main objectives is to find a good looking low cost alternative.
At $475 does not fit in this.
They are cool though.
Show chrome has a 3.5 inch chrome thin driving light for $62 each. I can get a pair for $100. This is complete with 55 watt bulbs and mounts. I can change the bulbs to 27 watt xenon blue bulbs for $30.
The mount to fit the cross bar will cost around $15 per pair including paint. I like silver metallic with several coats of clear or satin black. Both would go well with the any color. I may even find some paint that would be close to my Blue.
The 3.5 inch lights would compliment the bike design.
A total of around $145 Even adding a switch with a relay would only add around Another $15

They are cool looking I admit.

Those (pictured) are just to give an idea of what it would look like - not an actual product. I just picked some random lights and sized them down (in Photoshop) and added a little braket (barely visible) to help with the decision process.

Hopefully I can get started on my winter mods soon. I have everything except the handle bars. The design is finished for the luggage rack, started fitting the cruise pegs, got the lights (these may be temporary), IPod connector and extension came in, got my speakers yesterday evening. I should get the luggage rack back next week for the cutter, my son in law has excess to a plasma cutter. Talked to my painter today about some graphics so as soon as he gets finished my my VTX he is going to lay out some ideas for the graphics.

Once I can get started on everything It should take me about 3 days, excluding paint work which may wait until next winter. My painter is really really slow, but 1 of the best custom painters around.

dd are you getting custom bars or going with the vic bar with 2.25 inches of more pull back? Also, what kind of paint job are your doing?

At this point I am going with the Victory bars +2.25 inch

They have been on back order for over a month. If it ends up being delayed again I will go with flanders. They have made me several custom 1 off bars n the past. A good part of using flanders is you can get them made in chrome or powder coated black. I prefer them powder coated black

I am not completely sure at this point. I do not think I am going to do a major paint make over but more like some graphics, maybe a mural/painting of my Mom and Dad. I want to stay with the lines of the bike and be creative to enhance the bike's lines. My painter is capable of doing what ever I want.
My XC is new to me so I will be doing some photo cropping later on to see what would blend in with the bikes curves and lines. This is what he did on my Ultra
The detail is unbelievable. Larry has a God given talent

Finally got started, had a couple of bikes come in, Christmas, and a few other things got in the way.

This is only a template but you get the idea. I have a bike in the shop but the owner wants to be involved in the work so I have a little time to work on some of my stuff.

I hope to get started on my luggage rack next week.
Been too doggone cold to go to the shop and now they are calling for snow again.

The photo is a little deceiving but if the mount strap is as long as it look in the one middle photo I think your going to get vibration.
I'm just guessing that the bolt for mounting is like a 10mm. If so I think the brace will brake at the hole from the vibration.
Being here and you there this is all the help I can be.

Thank you for the suggestion.
I am using 3/8 cold roll steel 1.5 inches wide.
I wanted to use round cold roll but when I added the flat mounts I was afraid I could not get it to look right. That is not completely ruled out yet.

There may be some vibrations but I doubt it will break at the hole. The sandwich should give enough support/strength with the type of metal for that not to happen.

This is just a start, your suggestion is most welcomed.

I have also come up with a way to make the rear brake reservoir to really look cool. I will post up when the stuff comes in. We all like chrome, it will be almost all chrome.
