Before removing the tank, check the MDF switches on the hand controls...

Use a good contact cleaner (NOT WD-40!) to clean them up - DeOxIt from Caig Labs is excellent. (I think Radio Shack carries it...)

This would be a good time to look at other switch contacts in the housings, as well.

Good call. Will open the hand controls and inspect and clean. Thanks.
Thats all that was wrong with my TC when I bought it (used), I guess the PO didn't use the MFD because much because he had a NUVU on it and it was the right MODE selector that was the culprit for my MFD inop. Simple clean and excersise and works like a champ. Will say that first 1000 miles it was still a little sketchy and didnt cycle through too easily but after constant use it cleared up and works like a champ. Also had problems with the trip reset/select on the left grip but it fixed itself after constant use. Good luck...cheers
