Ok so I've had my 175/60R16 Dunlap winter sport run flat tire on for over 1,000 miles now and I want to share my observations. Plus I'm hoping for some advice from other dark siders.

For back ground info I replaced both tires at the same time. I had about 11,000 miles on them and they were shot. I'm talking cupped and bald really bad. It was driving really terrible, pretty dangerous actually. The front tire I used is a factory E3. My first impression was really good but then again anything would have been better.

First the positives. I LOVE the extra traction when accelerating and especially braking. I have this loop I do for practice when just messing around. Part of the loop is a practice emergency stop. The CT beats my best MT stop by 6-8 feet (from 55 mph) easy. Doing a burn out results in a sweet tire squeal but that's just for fun. It hooks awesome! The low speed parking lot turns are good and the higher speed sweepers are good.

Now for the not so positive. Honestly I'm having trouble adjusting. After the initial improvement over my shot original tires I'm struggling. There are tolerable issues around town with uneven roads as it tries to pull the back end. Pulling up parallel to a small curb or threshold it wants to push the bike over when you cross the transition but this to is tolerable when you begin to expect it.

Another tolerable but disappointing observation is the tracking. With a MT tire I used to tell people that the XC drove like it had power steering. With the CT that is pretty much gone and the back end follows the front end more like a pre 2009 HD dresser with a bit of a delay.

What I'm really struggling with is normal cruising on lower quality state routes and back roads. I don't know how best to explain it but the bike now seems to "hunt" for a line. I find it more difficult to hold a line than with the MT. I tend to feel like a drunk driver weaving in my own lane. Not that I do it often but there is no way I'd ride side by side with someone right now in one lane. I can't hold a good enough line.

I've read other CT reviews and have not heard this sort of problem. From what I've read most are happier with tire pressure down as low as 30 - 33 pounds. but for me the lower the pressure the worse the problem gets. I'm at 38 pounds right now and it's better but still aggravating.

For those running a CT do you have any suggestions? I can live with the "tolerable" observations but this line hunting problem has me on the verge of going back to a MT.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running the same back tire and occasionally feel what you describe but it's so rare that when it does happen; the road quality is to blame and I'm fairly sure the same thing would have happened with a standard E3.

It might not hurt for you to go back to a MT for a while or even permanently if you feel you aren't getting the benefits that many are with the same tire. I certainly can't explain it without riding on your local roads.

I've noticed an increase in feel of the tar snakes but soon realized that they are just warming up and will soon settle into the road as they liquify.

Lower your pressure down to 32-33lbs, if its a run flat 38 would be to high, I had car tires on my goldwind for about 78,000 miles and never ran more than 33lbs, as far as the tracting in the ruts of the road that is the nature of a CT being so wide and flat. once you know what to look for on the road you will avoid the ruts.

I ran two dunlop winter sports on my wing and the last one was a Michelin , now on the XCT I have a michelin also and it doesnt have alot of th same issues as the dunlop. It rides and handles like a motorcycle tire , here is a link to what I run on my XCT

I don't have a run flat just a normal CT Yes the crown in the some roads moves me around but when my head is not in the clouds I just relax and its fine. The less you fight it the easer it is.
It sounds to me that your not use to the CT yet. I have 9 thousand on it and run 38psi. I have played with the air pressure from 34 to 41 and for me 38psi is the best.
Yes you'll find place the a MC tire works better but you either have to be passion or go back.
Try different air psi and give each setting a good week before you change it.

I experience that odd sensation when stopping at a light on a crowned or tilted road. It wants to turn down hill. After 8,000 miles on it I have learned to watch and react much better.
That's my only beef, and I see it as minor. I don't burn rubber or ride 2 in a lane, so the other things are non-issues.

I saw several CTs on touring rigs on my little trip down south this weekend. Seems like the idea is gaining traction so to speak...

Yeah all the items I listed a tolerable I've either gotten used to or learned to avoid those situations. I was only trying to be thorough.

I've been working on a Bronco project lately so I've not been riding to much the last couple weeks. It's done and up for sale now so I'll be back on the boke more. I'm going to try going up another pound or two and see how it feels.

just ordered a michellin primacy alpin 195/55/16 ZP for the Vision rear and a BStone G709 front. Should have both mounted up next week and a few weekender trips shortly thereafter. Hope to have positive review for here.

Looks like there are 3 more tires to choose from in the 175/60/16 size at this site. Cool beans!! Lowest price is $86 for a Federal tire.

I like these narrower CT's personally. They don't have that stand up feel and they don't track the grooves nearly as much. Maybe because there simply isn't as much tire on the pavement. The 60 height keeps the speedo honest too.

Not that I am in favor of dark siding but having sold tires for a while in my past let me offer this in choosing. Look at the amount of "sipes" near the sidewall, these are the little cuts and grooves that are not as deep as the normal tread. The less there are of these for a motorcycle the more stable the tire will be in a turn. The next tip is rather common sense, look for a symmetrical tread pattern so your traction is identical side to side.

For example the Federal tire mentioned has the tread as different from side to side, which would result in uneven handling. The Michelin listed in the link above is the ideal tread pattern but does have a lot of sipes which is not as good as others but not the end of the world. You want the outer edges to have the same tread pattern.

It must be my birthday or something. I got my $99 drivers backrest sorted out, I finally fixed the cruise control on my old Bronco AND I put 40 pounds in my rear CT.

Holy crap, I can't believe what a difference 3-4 pounds of air made!!! I did about 40 miles tonight on the roads where I was having my wondering problem and low and behold it's gone!!

I no longer look like a drunk driver weaving back and forth. It feels much more sure footed and much more confident in where it's heading.

I'm not saying that I won't ever go back to a MT but I no longer feel I need to make a change any time soon.

Seems to be the magic with a CT, finding that perfect pressure. Most run well under the rated cold max especially on a Run flat.

Keep us posted.

Mine is mounted. Waiting for some miles now.

Bob, I wonder if the CT on front could be exacerbating the issues? I have a CT onthe rear of my GoldWing, and rode it cross country before I got the sidecar added. Never really noticed the issues you describe, but of course it is a different bike
