Went out for a nice ride today took the back roads to the beach. On my way back home ended up having an incident. I was coming to an intersection where the roads meet at about 30 degrees. I was going to make a left turn .... here's where everything went to sh**. There is a turn off to go left which I missed. No problem, as there is plenty of open area to pull into, out of traffic a little ways before the stop sign. I pulled up there square to the road. Look both ways the only thing that was coming was a van a good distance away who just started to proceed from a traffic light. So I went wanting to get going down the road. I failed to turn the steering a bit left before going, totally failed to look left up the road and next thing I was target fixated on the curb on the right. Instead of getting my head up and leaning or at least just stopping the bike, I thought I was going to just make it. NOT. I caught the curb (tar) and clipped the metal guard rail with the engine guard which got bent back to the floorboard and over the brake pedal. I was fortunate to keep the bike up. I escaped without a scratch, Guess the crash bar did it's job, Just my pride and confidence a bit scarred.
When I got home I checked for any more damage, front wheel, forks, and fender, all were spared.
I was hoping to save the crash bar. The top is mounted with a clamp to the frame which just spun. The bottom has a metal bracket which bent, not the bar itself. I pulled up to a lolly column in the garage, tied both brakes down and used a ratchet tie down around the pole to pull the crash bar back into place. One would never know it was bent. Even the scrape is small and not deep at all. I just can't believe that I did that.:crying

You threw the dice and lost. But you came out even. A lot of lessons learned. Glad you dodged the bullet.

Thursday I made a worse mistake than that. Thrown off bike and got bike scratched up with a tank dent. Mechanically fine just doesn't look pretty. I'll be fine too but sore for now.

The bike can be fixed (as everyone always says) but as long as you're okay; that's what matters.

Only two kinds of bikers. Those who've been down and those who are gonna. Been down a few times myself but still riding.

Yes, our mechanic at work wrapped a bike around a light pole. Broke his neck and back. Fused back together. This was all before he hired on with us. Point being he still walks, and still rides his M109R.

Stupid happens. My case I just need a new helm, new windshield, and some cosmetic work. Could have been much worse for me and bike but when got it up rode couple hours to dinner and next day rode the 9 hours back home.

Sorry to hear about the bike, glad your ok and hopefully not too sore.I was going pretty slow when I hit and was nearly parallel to the guard rail. After, I was thinking my leg could have gotten pinned between the bike and the guard rail, guess I'm lucky the crash bar took the hit.
It only takes a second for cr*p to happen as we all most likely have our share of close ones and usually we can avoid a crash. I know I had a couple where the out come would not have been good and one time thought I was a goner for sure. But it is the risk we all take.

@rojo154 I'm glad you and the bike are okay. But the crash bar is compromised...It might look okay, but chances are its not going to hold up if you have to "test" again...

Yeah definitely replace the bar. Once metal has been bent you can straighten it but it's far easier for it to bend the next time with less force.

I was thinking the same thing. I might see what it will cost to make up a new bracket and get it welded on and re-chromed. Should be cheaper than buying another crash bar, ..I hope.
