A bunch of us were talking in the parking lot tonight before we went in to the Nashville Resue Mission. We (BFC M/M) preach their the third Sunday of the month. Anyway, someone made a comment of how Polaris shot themselves in the foot by killing Victory. This guy was a big Victory fan until January of 2017. He now rides a H-D and also works at a H-D dealership. He was telling us how the trade in for a 2017 Polaris Indian is really bad. He was trying to work with someone trading in their Polaris Indian for a Harley. That's when he made the comment about Polaris shooting themselves in the foot.

He asked me what I thought so I said this:"If you're dating someone who murdered their son. Would you trust them to babysit their adopted son?" I then added "Polaris Indian shouldn't even be a thought until they go over 18 years."

Anyway, I think that's a pretty good comparison between Polaris murdering Victory for the name they bought.

It used to be HD was a true motorcycle company but then they got really big after everyone could be a part owner by buying stock. I know people who bought $500 worth of HD stock then 7-10 years later took the profits from the stock splitting so many times and bought a brand new Harley with it.

The Twin-Cam engine was the worst designed HD engine ever produced. It pissed a lot of people off due to it being a sub-par engine but they still charged a premium price. No other car or bike had to have the engine's bottom end completely rebuilt before it could be relied on. I went through 4 of those until I said enough. I couldn't trust them to not grenade under me. That's when Victory came up on my radar.

Polaris is NOT a motorcycle company but they are a good motor company. They have the know-how and the talent to design and build good stuff but they don't have the heart it takes to be a great motor company for one simple reason. They are run by bean counters.

I'll never buy another Polaris product but I'm also planning on keeping what I have. I'm banking on good maintenance keeping these two bikes on the road until I'm done riding.

I like the Polaris Indian bikes but there's just no way I could justify buying one now after what they did to Victory on principle alone.

Resale was just as terrible on Victorys back when they were in production so that is not much of a comparison to the Polaris Indians. HD resale/trade in is not much better, that is what got a couple of my buddies off the HD bandwagon when they went to trade that $20k plus street glide that was a few years old and they were offered $8k to $10k for it with the mandatory $2k worth of extra chrome and performance parts on it.

Funny you bring this is up Mark because I was talking to one of my in-laws yesterday and he was thinking seriously about trading his Kawi tour bike in on a Indian Chieftan. I said you mean Polaris Indian don't you and he just stared. He had no clue who even made the new Indian which I suspect most people don't or just don't want to know just as long as they get that "nostalgic" feeling.

That is a brutally apt analogy indeed. I just paid off my XR, which is quite an accomplishment for me because when it has come to cars I drive them till I start to wonder if I'm going to have to start fixing things on them or until I get bored and trade them. I have said to a friend or two I did as much, and they ask, "oh, what you gonna trade up to?"

Ha! As if 1) anything exists than I consider to be an improvement, and 2) I'm not fiercely in love with this machine. "Well, what about Indian?" To which I reply: "screw Polaris." I think your line is better, though, Mark, so I hope you don't mind if I use it lol.

If I were gonna get another bike, it'd either be a Triumph Rocket III or a BMW K1600B. But I'm not, so that's just day dreaming. Besides, the cash outflow for the bike payment has already been reallocated to the payments on the Ford Focus ST I just bought, because I stopped maturing psychologically 17 years ago at the age of 19 :ltr:

However, if you own a set of forged crash bars, you can double your money on those things because I've seen used ones going for a grand. So, silver lining, I guess.

Billy brings up something I have been marinating over ever since the murder of Victory, and that's what do I do if something happens to smite my XR? I wouldn't want a bike that's any heavier, or requires more muscle to get it off of the side stand. The only candidate to date is an Indian Scout, but like many here, I'm scared spitless to throw money at Polaris. What to do?
I could go back to revisit another love; sport cars. From the late 50s to the 70s I was was deep into them, having a ball racing, slaloming, rallying and touring. SC clubs are similar to MC clubs in many ways, so the transition will be painless. Another benefit is Pretty Wife can participate - she no longer rides with me, but can ride shotgun in a two seater.
What sport car would I get you ask? Easy. I find the basic Fiat 124 Spyder 6 speed very appealing. One can be had for well under $20K new. And you get doors, windows, folding top, wipers, heater, AC, radio all tossed in on the bargain.
I still really enjoy riding, and I'll hang in there as long as I and my XR can. But there will come that day of reckoning.

I don't want to give up my Victory, especially when I got it just where I want it.

If I do have to replace it, however, I'm giving serious thought to the new Yamaha Venture. I haven't sat on it yet (let alone taking it for a ride) but so far I dig it.

My wife and I spent many years when we lived in Southern California with the Rear Engine FIAT Club. I think we ended up with about a dozen different Fiats over the years. My favorite was my 1987 Bertone X1/9 that I bought brand new (7 miles on the odometer) in 1999 from an Alfa Romeo dealer. That was my final X1/9. I loved it for about 4 years then sold it to a company that sent it to Japan. I think I got way more than I paid for it. The 850 Spiders were fun little cars but the 124 Spyders were wonderful cars. As were the various 131 and 128 cars we had. I think I still have a couple Fiat model cars still in their saran wrapped un-opened boxes.

Anyway, if you were need a replacement for your CR, another CR fits the bill perfectly. And it will cost less as time goes on. Same for me and my CCT. I'd get another CCT without hesitation if my CCT were to somehow become toast.

I also like just about everything about the new Yamaha Venture. Except the price. I just can't justify going their when perfectly fine Victory's can be had for (way) less than half the cost of the new Yamaha. I'm know I'm squarely in the demographic for the Yamaha Venture, but, no way. No way am I'm spending that kind of money again for a new motorcycle. My well appointed company car, a Ford Taurus costs less, much less. I'm fully aware of the economy of scale that builds well over a 3000 (5000?) Ford Taurus cars for every Yamaha Venture. That's fine, but I'm still not going to play in the new motorcycle arena.

Mark...replacing my XR with another one is a consideration I forgot to mention. BTW, I have never owned a Fiat, but I have had 4 Alfa Romeos - great cars those. I'd love to have a new Giulia, but two things stop me; no manual and the price. I can buy 2 124s for one standard Giulia and have money left over.
If all goes as planned, Pretty Wife and I will be in your neck of the woods the last half of June at Tim's Ford State Park near Winchester. We're taking the cage, a Chrysler 300C wit da Hemi and intend to linger in that part of the county for a while. Incidentally, the reason for being there is a gathering of the remains of the old VTS (Venture Touring Society) of which I have been a member since 1984. Had a first year (1983) Venture then, which I put over 160K trouble free miles on before selling it. Very entertaining bike.

I'm also a fan of the Saturn Sky. However, I'm not really built for the small sports-car scene. They's have to build the car around me rather than get in/out of it.

PS - the latest Toyota MR2's were awesome cars and even came with a Supercharger. Plus when the Subaru SVX came out it was also quite a fun vehicle.

I have yet to ride the Venture, Broggy, but I've plunked my butt in one. And I do mean "in" not "on." Very comfortable, nice ergos, and approximately the size of a Fuel Crisis era Toyota Corolla. But man, it's a sharp looking bike.
@RICZ the ST i bought met my go-fast, price, and practicality criteria. 252 hp/270 tq FWD turbocharged, direct-injected I-4 crouched on a 6-speed manual. No, it's not he RS. I didn't feel the RS is a good value for the money, which is good since I couldn't afford. If I had been able to, I'd have made that bad decision and loved every second of it I'm sure :ltr: . My concession to practicality was it being a hatchback, which edged out the Subie offerings of the WRX and BRZ, thought I would've liked the the AWD or RWD respectively of those offerings. And all that fun is wrapped up in an unassuming plain white.

Good choice Billy...I'm with you for all the reasons you mention. If money was no object, my dream car dujour is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV cuz it doesn't give up a thing in the performance and handling department over the Giulia sedan and its a cargo hauler. And they are all wheel drive to boot. While I'm at it, I might as well spring for the 505 hp Quadrofoglio model. Hey, it's only money.

many new Indian buyers actually think they're getting an Indian made by Indian Motor Co.
or they want to believe that.
