Hello All,

I have a new 2012 Victory Cross Roads in Red. Overall, very happy with it. While not as fast as my prior bike (Triumph Speed Triple), it is infinitely more comfortable to ride. I live in Midwest and the handling and power of the Triumph were just wasted here. The Victory is much better suited to the riding I can do, wandering around mostly straight but scenic backroads.

I do have three questions I did not see in some quick searches.

-I am not sure if my bike has the oem or stage 1 exhaust. Is the exhaust marked in any way to tell for sure? I saw in a search if you shine a flashlight in the end and see a baffle its oem, if it goes straight all the way down the length its stage 1. But is there any easier way to tell other than trying to look through the small 1" hole?

-I love the way the bike looks sans shield, but like most, the wind pressure is a bit much on the interstate with the bolt upright riding position. I wondered, can a backrest help support one's body well enough to not have to resort to a shield? I see many folks get back rest for extra support on Cross Countrys, but I never read in my searches people using it for more than lower back support, but to help hold you up against wind blast when riding a Cross Roads without a shield.

-My bike came with the mid height shield. I added the lower fork deflectors and that helped with buffeting but its still there enough to be uncomfortable at 70mph. When riding with a shield, I am debating between going to a much taller or much shorter shield. I see cee bailey makes 15"-23" versions. My oem one is roughly 20". Does anyone have experience with a super short 15" shield? Does it get your helmet into clean air, or still rough? (I am 5'10", 195 lbs). I think the 23" has a better chance for reduced buffeting, but at my height, I fear a 23" is just tall enough to put the top edge right in my field of view. I almost need a 25", but no one makes one. The 20" oem one I can easily look over, I have to hunch quite a bit to look through it.

Congrats on the purchase. I think if you had a Stage 1 you would know it. The OEM non-Stage exhaust is very quiet.

I am 90% sure its the OEM. It is quiet at idle, but when you rev it up it has a nice and seemingly loud sound. People talk about the stage 1 being so quiet, I was wondering if maybe I have it. Probably not, just curious to verify. I think I just need to go to my local Vic dealer, I'm sure they have an X bike there with the stage 1 on it I can listen to to verify.

More then likely you have stock exhaust. Stage 1 will coast you around $700 bucks so if you paid no extra money you didn't get it.

There are all kinds of shields out there you could find some on craigslist just type in Victory in parts and see what come up. Yes a back rest might help you

I too have the mid height windshield and am 5-10. I also have the fork mounted deflectors and am very pleased with the aerodynamics. I have great protection and no buffeting, so I can't give you any advice. The only times I remove the windshield is when its hot out and I'm just doing city riding, no highway. I'm old enough that i don't volunteer for discomfort anymore.

I bought the bike from a car dealer that took it in on trade. So while I have the 1st owners paperwork, I have nothing on any accessory's he/she put on, and I can't talk to the original owner. I will try to look in the exhaust hole tonight and see if I see that baffle. Sounds like its likely stock if the stage 1 is notice-ably loud and I'd know.

Those lower deflectors did help a lot. There is still just a little helmet bobbing that I'd like to fix if I can. Maybe I'm just not used to riding a bike with a shield. I've been riding since 2005 but they have all been sporty "standard" or "sport" bikes. Suzuki SV650, Triumph Daytona 675, Triumph Speed Triple. On all those bikes, my full face helmet is well above any body work or shield and in clean smooth air. My chest would be in air too but the forward lean counteracts the wind pressure. It was very interesting to ride the Cross Roads the first time shield-less and feel that sail effect I always read about. :D Hence I think I may have to stick to a shield-on set up. I guess maybe I just have to cough up money to try a super short one, see if it lowers the dirty air to my chest below my helmet. If not, return it and a stocking fee and order another as tall as I can and hope that will push the dirty air up over my head to reduce the bobbing.

I had the mid height shield as well and went with a 16" shield from cee baileys for my XR...its enough to keep the "sail" effect in check and very little buffeting. With the 20" shield it would blur my vision:):)

Did you get it with the built in 2" lower extension? Or do you use the Victory lower fork deflectors? Or both? This is the outcome I was hoping for. Smooth air at the helmet, and a clear view ahead.

I have the forged bars so I bought the original style windshield..it measures 1" shorter than the oem vic short windshield...ill try to get a pic of it for you. Its short enough to not be noticeable but enough of a shield to be able to ride all day. I just rode to key west from ATL just a few weeks agothumb up

I really really like that short shield. Your bike looks just like mine! I also have the RAD III mirrors, but I picked the cast stems instead of the tubes. You also have the new Vic badges I have sitting on my table soon to be put on. And you have the painted chin piece I want to get someday.

I think 15" will be short enough to put my head in smooth air. The only way to know is to give it a try, so I will shoot for a 15" first. If that doesn't work, I will go for a barn door tall one and maybe inquire about one of those Goldwing vents to alleviate back pressure on such a large shield. Thanks for the help and feedback everyone.

I have lowered my bike 2".. And i can tell a difference the air flow if i have the rear shock pumped way up...buffeting is hard to get right as every rider is different..but if u start out short you cant add to the windshield..however you can always take a taller shield and cut it to what fits you..just a thought. Good luck

Thanks, that is good advice. Maybe I'll call Cee Bailey and see what they think. I'm ok with getting the super short, and if that doesn't work, pay to return and go tall and then cut the tall one down if needed. I also want to know if they can put one of those goldwing vents in the shield. They put them on CC shields, so I assume they can, its just not shown on their order page for CR shields.

What I really want is for someone to make for the Cross Roads what Harley intro'd a year ago for their Road King. This short screen looks nice and with the unique shape and vent, supposedly has no buffeting but takes the wind pressure off. I believe Harley worked with some University students and used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing to design a buffet-less shield.
