Well I took the plunge in replacing the fuel pump on my Vegas a few weeks back. I had bought it from a guy that said he had it in storage for not very long. I guess he put a lot of additives to the fuel because when i drained the tank the fuel was green/orange and potent as hell. I had taken my bike for a ride with my brother in law on his Road Star and it ran rough. I couldn't cruise at low speeds , had to be using the throttle and clutch at the same time, Revving every so often. Only ran somewhat ok at highway speeds. When he was behind me he would say my bike was blow out 6 inch flames and smelled like raw fuel. I had called and Ill give a shout out to Rylan @ the Vic Shop to order a seal kit since i wanted to clean out the tank. I went and rented at fuel pressure tool.... BAM 0 psi but it would still start and run. I thought it was the gauge so i bought a new one and still 0 psi. I would prime the pump a few time to see if it would build pressure and nothing, just sounded like liquid swishing around. Took off the tank which kept throwing the remaining fuel out ...knew the pump or regulator was gone by this. I opened the tank since the weather here was in the low 40s one day and found the filters were dry rot and falling apart in the tank. I also notice the connecting rubber hose from the pump to the regulator was cracked. Whoever though that was a good idea is off their meds. 100% part to fail especially with the fuel now a days and no clamp to save it. To top it off its a push to seal cone type rubber hose . Nothing to completely seal it against the pump housing or the pump nipple. I was able to make one and forced it in and tighten the clamp holding the pump. Put everything back together and primed it ...50psi. Fire up right away and idled nice. It runs smooth at low traffic speeds. All i can say now is i thought it had power before ...now its something else.

Good for you U12! I sometimes have to remind myself my 04 is turning 16 years young because it runs so good, rides so nice, and handles so well. They really got the steel frame Vic's down pretty good right from the start. I guess their learning experience with the first couple of years paid off.

Sometimes we just have to get our hands dirty though. I just replaced a $10 gasket under the engine on one of my Ford's that's 20 yo now. Went ahead and changed the coolant and engine oil at the same time. If I paid someone to do those 3 things I'd be looking at a $2-300 bill. Next up; change the auto trans fluid and differential fluid. With a 104k miles on it; it's probably due. Only had the car for a couple months.
