Note To Self: You Now Have 6 Gears Stupid!!!

So yesterday turned out to be a relatively decent day other than the fact that it was almost 90° outside. The wife and I decide to take a putt up to Oatman AZ and see the wild burros roaming the streets and possibly buy some tourist crap or have a beer.

On the way up there I'm cruising along at around 70 mph just fat, dumb and happy and I look down at the dash and I realize that there's a big "5" looking back at me from the gear indicator, OOPS!! After walking around Oatman for a couple of hours and having lunch (no beer) we get back on the scooter and head back down the hill. Once on I-40 after having the cruise set for five or six miles I think to myself, "self, does this thing sound a little loud?" Sure enough I look down at the damn dash board and there's that "5" looking back at me again.

It appears that forty years of riding five speeds isn't gonna be cured in just a few weeks.;)

Well- I think I slightly bruised my toes riding my Dad's FJR 1300. That thing needs a #6 in the worst way, and I bet I have lifted up on that thing (hoping it appeared overnight, I guess :rolleyes: ) a couple thousand times only to be denied..

He's gotten pretty tired of hearing about it by now- as all the media types continue to thrash that dead horse mercilessly.. He likes my Vic.

First time he rode it I says: Dad- (hold up 6 fingers with a smirk on my face) He says- "So friggin what?! That gear is worthless under 70!" When we got back he says "Damn- that thing pulls pretty hard.. even in 6th gear".

I've never been a big fan of those stupid gear indicators myself and I've had a couple of bikes that had them, an '85 Wing and I believe an '83 Sport Saber. I'd prefer just something like an OD indicator on the dash or something and maybe make the clock and temp guage easier to read for those of us who have bifocals.

Since I drive trucks for a living and have a habit of running around with 120k pounds behind my seat I understand the need for things like 18 speeds and two speed axles when trying to move huge amounts of weight with a small (by comparison) amount of horse power. I have as of yet to embrace the concept of exactly "why" I need a sixth gear on a vehicle that weighs only 800 or so pounds and has 100+ horse power. I asked the sales manager at the dealership what the thought process was behind Victory's decision to put a sixth gear overdrive on the bike and his response was simply, "fuel mileage at cruise."

Now that I've got just under a thousand miles on this thing I'm starting to accept that the last gear does indeed have its uses. A couple of weeks ago while going somewhere with the club I noted that my rpm at 75 mph was considerably lower than those noisy Harleys around me. I decided that since 75 was under 3k rpm I'd run it up to 4k and see how fast that was. When the speedo hit 95 mph and the tach had only reached 3,500 rpm I decided that getting nailed for reckless driving didn't warrant finding out the answer to my question. That is one long legged overdrive gear!!

This is the first bike I've owned that has a 6th gear. Three of my previous bikes were Yamaha Ventures. An 85, 87, and '06. What surprises me about the Victory is the POWER it has. This thing pulls harder in 6th gear than those 3 bikes did in 5th. I'd have to be in 4th on them to feel similar power and those bikes were no slouch.

my previous bike was a Kawi Vulcan 900, which has a 5 speed. Kawi's motor revs a fair bit higher than the 106, but at 75 in 5th it pulled over 4 grand. Felt a touch buzzy and didn't have much power left. Personally, I love sixth gear, but yeah, you almost don't need it under 70 mph.

Foto joe, to answer your question, there is a lot of leg on the other side of 95, even on a completely stock XCT :D

I forgot about the 6th gear as well. This is one of the main reasons I purchased this bike instead of staying with yamaha. So when I took it out for the first ride on friday I was cruising alone g down the road and shifted up and down thru gears then I decided to run it up to 75 to see rpms. Well i road for a few minutes then realized Hey Shift into 6th gear dummy..

Glad im not the only one.

I had a '11 Kawasaki Vulcan. What a great bike! No complaints at all. For the long rides I do now, I prefer my Victory.

I rarely use sixth gear myself. If I'm going around 80-05mph I shift into it. Our highways here are 70mph but 80-85mph is the "accepted" standard pretty much everyone drives.

I spent most of my time in third and fourth gear cruising around. Due to the 106's complete lack of bottom end I tend to keep the RPMs higher than most people do probably

And specifically what rpm's would that be?

I'll run as low as 1800-2000 unless I want to really "get on it" but it pulls decent from there on a flat.

I rode Goldwings and I've always thought it needed a 6th gear. 3000 rpm at 70 mph kicks the **** out of gas mileage and it only gets worse above that. I've even tried taller rear tires can't go tall enough to make much difference. My XCT turns the same rpm in 5th as the wing did so when I shift to 6th it reenforces my thinking that the wing needed another gear. I ride with a group of wings and when we pass a car on the hyw they down shift to fourth, I stay in 6th and just roll the throttle and it takes off. The 106 has lots of torque so will pull hard. I've had mine up to 115 mph but with the tall windshield I'm thinking it may brake at higher speeds. I will be putting on a shorter one, I like to be able to see over it.

I have had to "re-train" myself a little bit regarding the shift points on this thing. After spending the last 8 years on a StratoLiner that produced peak torque at below 2,500 rpm there's a bit of an adjustment. The Strat would typically get shifted below 2k rpm around town and almost never above 2.5k anywhere, it just wasn't necessary. The Victory on the other hand doesn't tolerate low rpm shifts as well and is a lot more pipey than the Strat.
