my dealer tried to tell me that there are 4 important services. the first is the 500 mile which includes oil change and check suff at a cost of $300. the other 3 go up from there. the last costing $800. i can change my oil. adjust the belt. lubricate and check nut torque. my owners mentions none that has to be performed by dealer. am i wrong on this. my owners manuel says nothing about the air and oil filer number. did i over look this.

my laptop comma is dead. sorry.

Not at all my friend in fact I recently bought a lifetime billet filter that can be cleaned at every change...I was not impressed by my dealers lack of attention to detail....not to mention the cost of his services...I will be going to the self serve route for future servicing...

$300 for a 500 mile servise is insane. Cost should be a jug of oil[$40] a Filter[$10] a seal ring [$2] and an hour of labor at the shops rate

Your 2500 interval sevices should run 1.5-2 hours along with oil, grease, and cable lube.

Your 15K is gonna run 5-6 hours, and includes pulling the fork legs for service,

What it comes down to is that a service implies MUCH more then an oil change. If you choose to service your own bike then PLEASE make sure you do service it. This includes things like pulling, cleaning and lubing levers, properly lubing cables, inspecting/cleaning electrical conectors, servicing battery, and lubing pivot points. To name just a few items.

I guess you all ready own the bike. If not get him to pay for the 500 mile check up.
If your going to do your own oil then keep receipts and start a log. Look in your book and do as it tells you.
There are plenty of us that do are own.
I use oil filters from fleet farm there fram and I use amsoil. Both my choice.
Use victory oil till you have at leased 2500 so rings and other parts seat correct

I had the 500 mile service done at the dealer. Here's what they've charged me:

$129.00 - change engine oil and filter, 28 point inspection.
$35.99 - Victory Oil 5 Qt. bottle
$11.99 - Victory Oil Filter
$3.99 - Hazardous waste fee (this must be a CA fee)
$0.89 - Drain Plug Gasket
$4.76 - Tax (at 9.75%)

$186.62 was my total.

I'd say see what the next closest dealer charges, as your most local dealer seems to be on the greedy side of average.;)

The hazardous waste is $3.99 - I believe it's a state fee that covers for disposing of used oil. Welcome to California. Soon there will be a fee for taking a piss too, I'm sure. ;-)

The $35.99 was the actual oil.

They might have the oil disposal fee charged into the sales price of the new oil over there. Or maybe they just don't have one yet. Here it gets disposed for free too, if you drop it off at automotive stores. Maybe dealers have to charge it separately. Who knows.
