Hi Folks,

Just wondering what your impressions are of the build quality and fit and finish of the XC bikes as compared to the competition?

Most interested in comparison to Harley I guess since everyone seems to rave about paint and chrome quality on Harley's.

I have read some complaints about buzzing/rattling fairings.

Also, are the fenders plastic or steel on an XC?

Sorry for the questions, but the nearest dealer is 250 miles away so I can't check them out in person without a long drive.

Overall I'm happy with the quality of parts on Victory bikes. However I did take the plastic cheese wedges and thin metal cam and derby engine covers off and replace them with chromed aluminum. The plastic air intake box also bugs me so I've got an S&S intake on its way. The fenders on my vegas are metal so I would assume that they are on the XC as well.

Fit, finish and paint not as good as HD. Over-all quality of drivetrain, suspension and maintenance has HD beat hands down. Fairing rattles when going over train tracks or large chuck holes but it's not a deal breaker for me. Change your own oil on the Vic in 10 minutes, one hole and one oil for everything. That, check tire pressure, lube cable ends and ride the **** out of it is all you need to do.

How does the finish hold up over a few years (like frame paint, engine paint, etc.)? About the same as any other bike?

I have a 99 V92C. All of the chrome and paint all original. Still looks good, and in fact looks 2 to 3 times better than by buddies 99 Softail Standard. I know several guys with Harley's and most have been repainted. The paint is not anything special on them. The frame is dirty in some places but still looks good.

I agree with Bikendad. Harley has historically set the bar when it comes to fit and finish in regards to paint quality and chrome quality. Though many of their new bikes seem to be getting away from that. I actually think the paint quality on the X bikes is flat out sub par. It's not that the paint doesn't look good it's just that the durability isn't very good. Heck the paint quality on this bike isn't even close to as good as the paint on my Raider was. My one biggest gripe about Victory's is that their paint is about the same quality as sub $10,000 Japanese cruisers. For the most part fit and finish are OK, not quite HD levels but still OK. The only real problems that I see are the cheap plastic cheese wedges and the fairing on the XC tends to rattle. Other than that they are pretty good.

Of course they absolutely blow HD away in every other area so the decision was a no brainer for me. I'd rather have a very good base design and core of the motorcycle with some cost concessions on some of the smaller things rather than a really out dated and poorly engineered motorcycle with high end paint and chrome. To me, that is the definition of "polishing a turd". :)

I'd say the frame paint and engine paint are as good as anyone else out there. They seem to hold up well. I just have to put a little more effort into keeping the body paint of the bike polished to keep it looking good, thats all. Like I said, not a deal breaker.

I'd agree with everything Rajder reported. My paint is nice but it scratches just by looking at it. The bright side is that it's buffs out easy also.

As for the frame keep in mind that the X bikes and Visions have cast frames and swing arms. They clean up very easy. My swing arm was looking really bad and I just used some aluminmun wheel cleaner on it and it looks like new.

I've owned mostly Honda's with the last two being GW's so I can't really compare to the HD's. What I'll tell you is that IMHO Victory really needs to work on the attention to detail. This is my first 2 cylinder bike and all the rattle/buzz and vibration really drives me nuts. Mines a 2010 so the tranny is very loud but I've read that the new ones are better. The other thing that I struggle with the the fuel management system. I don't understand why every other manufacturer can build a system that let's you blip or goose the gas as you are down shifting but the Victory's will stall out if you do it. I'm pretty much out of the habbit now but it nearly caused me to go down several times.

On the positve side the ride and suspension are second to none and from all reports they are very reliable (I've only got 13,000 miles so far). I got a smoking deal on a repo bike and I'm adjusting to the twin cyclinder "character", I still laugh everytime I hear someone say that. Best of all it's american made so overall I'm a happy camper.

The paint is crap!!! lets be serious and not fool ourselves.I am very happy so far with my bike but for the prices they are getting for new vics they need to do better on some things.The best thing we have is a great motor as far as everything else they have to do much better like cheese wedges made out of plastic,weak paint cheesy looking license plate holders cheesy clutch cables that snap easy etc.etc .etc.I went to the dealer this weekend and the bikes are not cheap at all but alot of there parts are. And by the way that judge bike is ugly as hell and not comfortable at all seems like it was made for a kid!!!just saying.....One thing i dont get is those arleness edition bikes coming with a cheesy ass set of factory pipes are you kidding me!!! if i am going to spend that kind of $$$ i expect better stuff on the bike!!!

Geez, I guess I'm one lucky XR owner as I have no gripes about paint, fit or finish and I like the OEM cheese wedges. No one except us owners know they are plastic - BFD! If it comes back home a bit dusty, I simply wipe with a fluffy microfiber cloth I get from Griot's Garage. More than a bit dusty and I spray on some detailer and wipe with the same fluffy cloth. If I kick a case lid or go on a long tour, I use S-100 polish, it has a very fine abrasive that removes those pesky minor scratches.
Re the tranny; preloading the shifter gives you smoother and quieter shifts and is easier on all the parts involved.
When age and cancer dictated a lower seat height, I knew that meant a cruiser and I never liked them. Friends suggested I look at H-Ds and I did, but fortunately after checking out the just released Victory Cross bikes. H-D came in a distant third in every respect, after some metrics, IMO.
A test ride will be your undoing, my friend.

Nicely put. Not the first comment I have heard about paint and chrome quality going south on Harley's.

You are not the only luck one. My 2010 XC couldn't do much to make me any more happy. Fit and finish are excellent. I don't have any scratches in the paint and I ride the hell out of it. I could care less about having plastic wedges. You might tell a new corvette owner that he should complain about his cheap fiberglass body parts and trade them for some quality hundi sheet metal parts. I have 22k miles on my XC and my faring doesn't rattle. The transmission is noisy but not to a degree that it bothers me.thumb up

I agree that the paint is "softer" on my 2012. It scuffs quite easily. However, after spending an hour or so buffing (not a random orbital... BUFFING).... and then applying a few coats of Liquid Glass, the finish is both superb and durable.

I guess I am lucky. The paint is still good. Like I said most of the guys I ride with are HD guys, there's is not that good at all. I do have a friend an Cross Country, but he won a free custom paint job from a professional place in Evansville. So it look really good.

Fenders on the XC are steel. The only Victory with a plastic fender ever is the Vision I think. As far as the fairing rattle, I posted on one of these forums about how to fix that. It is very simple, almost petty. The little black piece behind the windshield that snaps on to the top of the fairing can start to rattle after the bike gets some miles on it. All you have to do is remove the windshield and put some really thin weather strip on the front side so when you re-install the windshield the windshield holds the plastic piece tight to one side. It's possible that some people don't have issues with this when others do because of the many different options of windshields we have, some may allow this to bother worse than others.

I saw a '10 XR in black where the paint looked a little rough, but my '11 in crimson seems to be holding up okay after 1200 miles and a washing and polishing, especially since my wife kicks the crap out of at least one hard bag when climbing on.

The plastic wedges are no gripe to me, and I was genuinely surprised and impressed when I discovered that both front and rear fenders were metal instal of fiberglas or composite. I did my research, and a comparably equipped and less powerful Road King will run ya at least $3k more. If plastic wedges save me $3k, I'm down with that.

I agree. To me shiny is shiny and my XR shines better than any other I've ever owned. Full disclosure: I've never owned a Harley, but I do like their bandannas.

2011 CC Imperial Blue. No problems with the paint - shines like crazy. Does not scratch easily - so no complaints there. Fit & finish seems to be pretty on par with HD. HD may appear better because of the additional chrome on the engines. Like most don't care for plastic chrome, but to be fair you won't have any rust problems out of plastic. Performance, reliability, ride-ability and handling leave HD in the dust. Love the bike, hate the prices for aftermarket mods, but what the hell - have to spend the money somehow.

Their underwear is neat too! You can watch the bar & shield logo go from white to yellow. How cool is that?!?

I agree, Saddle; shiny is good enough. I have a Chrysler 300C and the chrome you see on its wheels is a plastic cover. Good news is the spokes behind those covers are thin, making for a very light, cast alloy wheel and if the chrome is damaged, just replace the cover. I think the design compliments the car so well that I have yet to see an aftermarket wheel that will do the job better. Same goes for the cheese wedges. However, I did place a matching black insert from Barracuda on the left one. cheers
