Polaris Celebrating Victory With Hardcover Book. Victory Motorcycles 1998-2017. The Complete History Of An American Original.


One year ago I announced the demise of Victory, an American brand of stylish heavyweight cruiser, bagger and tourer motorcycles. The number of loyal buyers was quite high for a new brand, but after a 20-year ride, not high enough for Victory to survive. So, parent company Polaris decided to pull the plug and to focus on its other brand, Indian Motorcycle.

One year after shutting Victory’s operations, Polaris is celebrating Victory with a 192-page Hardcover Book, telling the complete history of the brand from the first original prototype showcased back in 1997 and first model in 1998, the Victory V92C.

Not only this book includes never seen before sketches of prototypes by Senior Industrial Designer Mike Song, displays superb photography of all released models (even the Empulse TT electric bike concept), but also contains unheard information about the company.

The co-authors, Michael Dapper and Lee Klancher, have a connection with the American motorcycle manufacturer. Michael Dapper was a Polaris employee since the beginning of idealizing the company entering into the motorcycle business. He was present at the time when a pre-production model was showcased to the world. I have this pre-ordered through the publisher but I really hope the story of the murder of Victory Motorcycles isn't the one sided silliness as dictated by Polaris Industries.

I want to read what really went on with Polaris going after Indian. Not the Polaris spin and lies, but the real motivating factors from an inside perspective. Nearly everything they say they want for Polaris Indian they either had or cld easily make from a Victory motorcycle. What are the actual details of how and why they spent so much money on so many very poor Victory Marketing rabbit trails. (Pikes Peak, the 156 bike, Brammo, drag racing, Isle of Mann etc). The Octane being stolen at the last minute and changed in to the Scout.

I know what I clearly saw from the outside. If this book comes out with the same lying bovine excrement spin of "we tried but we just couldn't sell enough" blah, blah, blah. I'd then rate the book as a simple CYA fantasy spin piece from Polaris senior management.

Polaris essentially gave up on the Victory line after about 2010 or so. Certainly after the Boardwalk and the Judge fizzled in the showroom. Wheels, audio and paint do not really make a 'new' model.

In all fairness to any bike or car manufacturer; it's financially impossible to come out with a whole new model every year or even every few years. They make one then if the market likes it then next year they sell the same model with improvements. Now that is something everyone expects; an improving line of the same product.

Victory did that with the Magnum and variations of it. ABS was an upgrade. Apparently there were some electronic upgrades in 2016 that I don't fully understand because the old PC-V MAP's don't work with them.

I think a hybrid Vision front (solid frame-mounted fairing) mated with an XCT rear would have really sold well. Too bad they weren't bold enough to try.

It was getting time to come up with a water-cooled big twin as well. So many opportunities lost. I would have considered getting an Indian one day if Polaris had proven itself to be reliable with Victory. The irony they can build a reliable and dependable motorcycle (Victory) but are not a reliable and dependable company is not lost on many of us.

Great post BBob!

Though I don't think they 'needed' a water cooled engine. The Polaris Indian and the new Yamaha's seem to point in that direction as well. But a refined and improved 106" turned into a 117" with Nikasil lined cylinders would have been awesome. As would have a refined transmission, electronics and a power windshield.

Redesign the IMHO awful (Bozo) front end of the Vision and install the CCT sides, back and add the reverse they also already had. Then yes, they would have had a world beating/leading touring bike. They literally could have stopped making the CCT and the Vision they gave up on years ago for an actual new grand touring model. The entire 2018 Cross bike line up should have had the 117" engine and refined transmission etc as well.

But: could a, would a, should a doesn't apply. They're gone. I still love my CCT orphan.

I think a lot of people have that same sentiment. I'm looking forward to hearing what Mark has to say about it. If I bought it I'd go through it one time then it would just sit somewhere collecting dust unless it was a good reference book as well.

I have the original which was interestingly written by the co-authors of this new one.
Could be its saving grace....time will tell...and a free read.
I agree with the comment under the Cyril Huze article that those of us still riding a Victory should get a free copy.
the first chapter of the new book will be a condensed version of the book I have already.
Ill get my local library to order a copy of the new one then I can read it and it can sit on the library shelves after.

maybe we can just wait a year after this hits the local barnes and nobles and look for it in the discount bin... for $55, i can think of a couple better ways to spend it than on this drivel. i would love to see the photos and some of the designs, but not enough to justify giving polaris any more money... specially after the lackluster response i got from them regarding my speedo issue...
