Two days ago I did some maintenance on my XCT. One of the things I did was a belt tension and alignment and this worked really well to get rid of the squeaking/chirping. But this good news is not why I need your help.

Another thing I did was attempt to clean and lubricate the clutch lever in its perch and the clutch cable ends. I noticed there was a lot of gunk on the cable where it went into the sleeve so I sprayed a bunch of solvent down in the annular space between the cable and sleeve. I think I used either carb cleaner or brake cleaner. I sprayed it from the top and it came out the bottom. All seemed good.

Now it is two days later and I have not ridden the bike in the interim. I just got on it and tried to pull in the clutch lever. It took all my strength to pull it. When I let go of the lever, it returns to its normal unpulled position but does not return briskly. There is a noticeable lag.

I suspect that I have ruined the clutch cable. The solvent probably swelled/dissolved the plastic cover that goes over the cable or maybe it swelled/dissolved the black plastic sleeve. I removed the cable from both ends and the cable moves okay in the sleeve but there is some drag. I suspect that with tension on the cable, the swollen/dissolved plastics drag.

Anybody else experience this? Were you able to fix the problem or did you have to get a new clutch cable? If the latter, any advice on where to buy one? Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

Sorry, editing this to ask one more question. I just googled "Victory cross country clutch cable" and the OEM ones are $145 to $155. There is a new one from Barnett for $81. Does anyone have experience with the Barnett clutch cable for a Victory bike in general and a XCT, specifically? Does it fit and work well like the OEM ones? Thanks.

Yep ruined :( I've been running a Barnett clutch cable for the last 30k miles with no issues. I changed from the stock to find out if I'd get a better clutch feel and I was worried the stock one might break because the feel was getting very heavy. The Barnett does feel better and lightened up the pull, nothing drastic but it has felt consistent over the years and has not given me any trouble.

Yep that stuff will dissolve the liner inside the cable meant to keep the cable sliding freely. One only needs to clean the very ends of the cable and add a little grease to where the ends spin on the both top and bottom levers.

That really sucks. Put a Barnett on the Cross Country I had after the stock one broke.

At 65K I'm still on my original clutch cable. I bought a CCT Barnett clutch cable from Pauilie before he left Honda East. And yes, $85 delivered sounds about right.

The (CCT) Barnett Part Number on the package is: 101-85-10010

The (CCT) Parts Unlimited Part Number on the package is: 0652-1947

I have a Save-U-Ride cable in my saddlebag and the Barnett cable is hanging from the closet door knob in my office. If not needed beforehand, I plan on installing the Barnett at 90K.

Yes, it really sucks but I have only myself to blame. I wasn't thinking and that momentary lack of thought will cost me just shy of a Benjamin. In truth, this is a pretty cheap lesson :) So let my lesson educate any who read this. Do NOT spray a solvent based cleaner into the annular space between the clutch cable and the sleeve. I suspect that nothing should ever be sprayed in there but I don't know about non-solvent based materials like Teflon sprays.

I have ordered a new Barnett clutch cable for $75 with free shipping from a dealer on ebay located in east TN. It should be here early next week. This weekend I will prep the bike to gain access to run the new cable and then put it on when it arrives. In the meantime, I plan to ride my wife's almost identical XCT. Fortunately, she is gone most of the week participating in a golf tournament so there will be no fighting over who gets to ride her bike.

FWIW I made a similar mistake early on with my XC. Instead of using a cleaner though; I used a "Dri Slide" cable lube before we found out these cables are teflon lined with no need for lube.

I got lucky I guess because at first it felt gummed up but it got looser over time until it felt normal again. I'm running that same cable today. I did use a cable lube Kevin X recommended and a cable luber device. Maybe between the two I flushed the bad stuff out and there was enough teflon coating to still work. Like I said; maybe I got lucky. I wouldn't be surprised if it wore out prematurely though.

Does the Barnett cable have the Teflon coating as well?

Barnett is a beefy cable. Large ball ends and very well made. I bought one but didn't need it. Sitting in my office in case I need in future.

This is what I use on my coated Harley Cable on the Buell. With the Mueller clutch assist ramp my clutch effort is laughable.
