Dealers are saying on the new bikes you are suppose to replace, not inspect and replace if necessary the belt. Why? same material as the Harley isn't it, and if an't worn, broken, cracked... why replace it?

To make it even worse they claim the pully needs to be replaced too for worn teeth that won't match belt. $1,700!

If true makes doesn't it make more sense to replace belt every 10-15k so teeth don't wear down?

Harley mechanic claims that even on the Harley, when the belt gets well over 30k and wears out, they often, but not always, have to replace pully as well.

im pretty sure i'd just go aftermarket then.

$5-600 for the rear. $350 for front and then a new belt is $260ish?
(i just took a quick look at conquest customs for #'s)

so $1200 and your customizing instead of maintaining...and that always hurts less to dish out $$$ for.cheers

Not sure about Victory but Harley rear pulleys are aluminum and should be replaced at the same time the belt is replaced. The front pulleys are steel and should last the life of the bike. I'm thinking the same goes for Victory. If you don't replace the rear pulley you will most likely have accelerated belt wear on your new belt.

Finally a spot where I can speak with some authority....Harley belts.

Since 2003, I've ridden Harley's part time for a motorcycle escort company. Some of our spare bikes (like the one I have in my garage right now) have as many as 140k on them. All are either FLHTPs or Road King police models. They are ridden hard year around with the exception being ice on the roads. I average about 15k a year on mine.

We break belts on an average of about every 50k miles. I can only remember one time that the pulleys were changed out over the years and that was due to a rock knocking the heck out of it. I'm not saying this is the right way to do it and certainly not what the Harley dealership wants, but our average of 50k miles is pretty consistent whether it's a pulley with 50k or 100k on it.

When it comes to belts, one thing to keep in mind is that it will NEVER break in a convenient spot.

I just saw a post on another site stating Harley ALSO suggest the belt be replaced along with pully at 30k. Difference is since the also have a chain in primary, total belt and pullys are $2,500! Prmary has to be torn into also for replacement.

So back to origional question, will replacing in sooner prevent having to replace pully?

go to 75 thousand and then think about replacing the belt.
harley tells you to inspect the belt and pulley they say and victory should to clean and inspect and then maybe replace. In your manual they show what to look for on a belt. Sold my one road glide with 140 thousand on it and it had the same belt that came new with the bike.
BS you have to replace at any thing under 75 thousand. thumb up

I checked through the service records of the bike I have in the garage right now. It was ridden by one of our smoother riders for 110k until the belt and belt only was replaced.

So back to your original question, if you replace pulleys as preventative maintenance, your dealer will love you.

The belt on my sportster let go this summer at around 45000 kms (rock damage). I did a little search and noticed that a fair number of belts that just broke, no obvious reason, were around 30,000 (+/- 10,000) miles. When my new bike gets up around that milage I'll probably check it more frequently. There was no mention of replacing the rear sprocket when I replaced the belt.

10,000 miles? What bikes were these breaking on, Sportys or Harleys in general?

The belts were going at 30,000 miles (+/- 10,000). It was on a sportster site and a harley site (sportster forum and HDforums). The mechanic that fixed mine said it was rare for a belt to just let go. Many of the respondants to the posts said they had never broken a belt and some of them had many more miles than 40,000.

On a trip with my HD the belt let loose on the expressway going 70mph at 50k~55k miles. The belt had been squeaking for a month and though it didn't need an adjustment I tried tightening it and when that didn't stop the squeak I loosened it and it made no difference in sound. Looking back I think it was rotted out as much as worn out. The squeaking sound was a warning that it was time to change the belt. It was about 16 yrs. old as well. While traveling down the thruway I got a sudden pronounced vibration through the entire bike. When I pulled over to check it out I found that only every third tooth was left on the belt. The rest must have pealed off and went around the pulleys causing the vibration. I continued on another 60 miles(taking it easy) to an HD dealer en route to my destination for a repair. After telling them I was on a trip, they took it in right away and pushed it to the front of the line. It was an expensive repair as it was the first yr. belt drive EVO. The inner and outer primary had to come off as well as pulling the clutch basket, starter and the swing arm just to slip in a new belt. They did have all the parts in stock and I was back on the road in 5 hrs.. My credit card took a beating but I was glad to be back on the road again. The HD dealer network is very good I must admit but I should have caught this problem myself and saved a few bucks but aside from the squeaking there was no other visual indication the belt was expired.

He gave a range of + or - making in 20,000 to 40,000.
THanks MTVic. The company I work for has had two of our 2010 FLHTPs hit 20k and needed the front wheel bearings replaced already so I'd believe almost anything when it comes to the product HD is putting out recently.
