Hey guy,

My 08 hammer hit 18k miles so I replaced the rear brake pads when I had a new tire installed. After installing the new pads the pedal does nothing to stop the bike. After pumping and about 100 miles of riding I have brake but nothing like the old pads did and now the are squeaking. Anyone wanna help with suggestions on what to do.

Yes they are in correctly I have made sure of it 1000 times.
And no I did not add brake grease to them because dealer said no need.
Fluid level is good and new about 5000 miles ago.

Sounds like they got in a bind or something. I'd pull them again, clean the piston(s) really well with brake cleaner, and check to see if the piston is moving when you push the brake pedal. Careful with this part because you don't want the piston to come all the way out. Be sure cap is off and not spilling fluid all over the place as you do this. Put it all back together use one of those $8 one man brake bleeding kits to make sure you've got good fluid with no air in the line.

Sometimes going back to the beginning is the only way to solve these kinds of issues even though it can be a bit of a pain to do so. No shortcuts.

DOT 4 brake fluid replace every 24 months or 12,500 miles I have a vacuum bleeder that works great if you do not have help to bleed the brakes. I highly recommend that you put new fluid in. Moisture from sitting over the winter months gets into all oils. Sometimes on bleeding brakes you have to do it 2 times to get it right. If you do not have a firm brake when applied , you have air in the system. Just keep bleeding till you get it right. New pads should feel like new factory brakes with new fluid.thumb up

Update guys.

Took wheel off checked the caliber and piston cleaned it all very well. Reinstall bleed brakes and everything was looking great feeling perfect, then took a test ride same damn thing. It goes down to the floor to start biting but won't give me very much stopping power at all. I did check to make sure piston worked fine with no leaks. I'm truly dumbfounded now.

Pistons are not working or master cylinder is not working .
If you unbolt the line from the master cylinder to the rear break and put your finger over the hole and push on the pedal you should feel pressure on your finger.
If you have pressure at the master cylinder then its the caliper.
Unbolt the caliper from the carrier and with pads in place stick a large screw driver length wise in between the pads and have some one push on the pedal. You should see the pistons come out. If not the square O rings inside the calipers are bad. Replace them don't cheat.


Auto parts store sells a brake fluid test kit for $3.95 break fluid should last for 4 to 5 rears. Your waisting your money if you do it every year.
