Rear Shock Replacement

26498 Views 61 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  depot picker
Rear Shock on my bike is done, holds air but oil is gone so its a terrible ride to say the least. I've got 44,000 miles on the bike.

Are there any alternatives out there or do I head for a used one E bay? I thought of Traxxion but they don't show any listing for Victory on their webs site. I've heard they carry something for our bikes but if they cant take the time to list it they obviously don't want the business.

Suggestions?

OK, heard from Traxxion. Pretty interesting. Penske tells me they don't know if they have one that can be adapted and traxxion uses a Penske shock set up for our bikes. Cost 650. When I asked about a remote location control he said they have it well dialed and it hasn't been needed for these bikes. Only down side is time to get it made up and sent to me. So I also found a new OEM from a trike shop for 160 delivered. Gives me a back up for when I have to take out the Penske for rebuilds.
Last summer I talked to Racetech when I was dealing with some issues on my rear suspension and asked about a shock for the wife's bike. They said no problem that I just needed to fill out their form with weights and dimensions and they would put one together. I guess something changed once they got a good look at what Vic had going back there. I'm going to give them a call the next day or so and see if I can find out what changed ?

I usually talk to Louie who is in the Tech department when I call.
Glad you found someone who can get you back on the road.
That shock from the trike shop sounds like a good deal. Most of the higher end shocks need to be rebuilt every few years when the oil degrades. Having a good spare means no down time while it is out getting the oil changed.

Oil?..dont the high end shocks use nitrogen?
Thats whats in my Progressive brand shock.
the penske uses nitrogen
DTMMIL... Ok you taught me something new, Thank you. Any idea what the approximate range is between rebuilds? Obviously in this case I'll have to send it in for a rebuild, glad I bought the new trike take off for a spare.
no idea, i just installed mine this fall, bought it used, no idea how many miles are on it, and actually it wasnt suppose to fit my bike, but i made it fit. its off of a vision, according to conquest its a bolt in swap, but its not, the lower clevis is different. so i had my bushings machined so it would fit. so far so good. and if i need a rebuild, thats what winter in MN is for! haha plenty of downtime

that is a great question though. hopefully Dan gets back to you soon
Ok heard from another at Race Tec. They responded to one of my emails. This one said they don't have one but if I bring my bike by they will see if they have something that will fit. Needless to say I've written them off.

Dan from Traxxion got ahold of me again. They are swamped and I can understand why when they seem to be on top of things much more than the others.

Regarding costs. He said that the warranty is one year, 12k miles on the Penske shock. I should be able to get around 40k or more between rebuilds. Rebuilds are $175, and essentially make the shock brand new, so you can rebuild them indefinitely.

Dan said Penske markets the shock as “user serviceable” but in his opinion most people don’t have the skill, tools, nitrogen etc, and are better off sending them in for service.

Don't know about others but in my case that would be true.

Mines on order

Cool!! im assuming from traxxion?
DTMMIL Yes, they were on top of it, had the answers etc so I didn't bat an eye and ordered. Cost was 650.00

The nitrogen pressure reduces the tendency for the oil to foam and change viscosity. Keeps the dampening more consistent as the temperature increases as the shock works harder. Or so I have been told. Something like that. All my suspension books are at home and I'm not.
I'm looking forward to trying this new shock, I've never had a high end shock on any of my bikes. I'm curious if the hype that they improve the ride so much is true. Although maybe that's only if you do the front as well.
i noticed a smoother, less harsh ride, then the air shock, and i have my preload turned up some from where it was when i got mine.

put a Progressive on the rear of my Vegas and its chalk n' cheese!
prompted me to change the fork oil quick-smart though as improved rear showed up the deficiencies at the front.
Though at 30,000 miles I was way over the service point for the forks.
All Good now though!:)
penske direct

when i wanted a Penske for my 13 hammer i called Conquest Customs, but he was in Sturgis so i called Penske directly in Reading PA, they manufacture there. told the tech my specs + what i wanted + under 2 wks it was built + delivered, they do not stock complete units but quickly build to your specs. very pleased + $$$$ well spent IMO. they make what ever adjustability you want, also remote controlled for baggers where access is not easy. read where a Vic bagger guy had one installed + was very pleased!!
Needing Updates

This thread is over a year old. Is there anyone with any new information? My rear shock blew and am needing a new shock. Can we get an update and quality, cost and performance. Thanks
For the cross bikes there was 1 member who disassembled and repaired his shock, that saved some big bucks.

If you want to rebuild your shock send me your email and I'll send you the photos and tell how to the best I can.

Otherwise look on ebay
Racetech

I received an email from Racetech and they do not have the specs for our bikes. Jeff from Racetech told me if someone close to CA can drop off a bike and then they will make a shock for us. So as of now, they dont have anything.

contact Penske. they will make a great shock for you, seen one rider ordered the remote adjuster + plus for quick + easy adjustments. not cheap but you get what you pay for!!
Penske Traxxion

I received an email from Penske Attached. Price $699.

Yes, we have a shock that will give you a much better ride than the stocker, and it is rebuildable unlike the stock shock:

Let me know if you have further questions.

Best regards,
Dan
