My "service engine light" is coming on and concerning me. I commute around 50miles a day to school and work on my bike and have still benn riding with this light on at times. my first question is how big of a deal is this?

i will try to explain best i can the circumstances. i first noticed this probably 500 miles ago. the light started only coming on every so often(every few times i rode) and around the same time i noticed than when i was riding home from work in the dark with my high beam on i would notice them start to dim at cruising speeds the lights always dim at idle with the lobe of the rpms which i found no problem but when i noticed them seeming to dim briefly at cruising speeds i was concerned. i first credite4d the light coming on to this as that was the only "problem" i was having with the bike. When i would go to turn or come to a stop i would shut the bike off and the light would not return for a few miles and sometimes not at all. It continued at aboout the same consistancey for close to 350 miles.

in the last few days the light has seemed to come on much sooner when riding and once even just when i started it it never shut off. today the bike has done something else and i am not so sure of the light dimming issue being the cause. the bike seems to hickup or briefly cut out for a second and then return quickly to the same rpm it does not do this alot but a hadfull of time enough to have me worried. the light also turned off for a whileby itself and then came back on which i had not seen it do before possibly by coincdence it seemed to cut out when changing from on to off or vice versa.

the bike has 86xx and i have only owned it since 45xx so i am uncertain of all the maintence but since i have owned it i have changed the oil. any ideas on what this could be? how corcerned should i be should i quit riding it right away? is there any commo cause for any of this or the light dimming as described? can the shop just read a code to decide what it is if you guys have no answer (I do not have the deepest pockets right now). I was considdering putting the bike for sale but if someone came to look at it and that light came on im sure they would pass.

any help is appretiated i tried using the search and i thought there used to be a sticky on the light that i cannot find i will continue to search the forum but in the mean time any direct answers are welcomed. thank you

i relize that was a long thread but i could describe the issue any shorter

also bike is a 2006 vegas 8ball and i did notice my front brake fluid is low but shurlly im not lucky enough for that to be the issue right?

I would think the first thing to check would be the battery connections, and voltage at the battery while the bike is running. I think a weak charging system could cause the light to come on.

i read around and see that my volts should read around 14 am i right here? whats the normal range? also i have heard a squeak from the ear every now and then the pads probably are ready since riding season is coming to an end here in illinois before to long i wasn't to worried about it at this point but could that be a cause?

Someone correct me if I have this wrong. To perform a voltage test. Start with volt meter on battery and key off meter should read 12 to 12.5 volts. If lower charge battery. Aftrer charging if still below 12 volts battery is bad. If holding the 12 to 12.5 volts turn the key on voltage will drop to 10.5 to 11.5. Then engage starter voltage will drop to about 9 volts. After bike starts voltage at idle should be 13.8 to 14.8.volts. If less than 13.5 volts voltage regulator/ rectifier or stator may be bad. A test can be performed to tell if it is the ststor or rectifier. You should check that your wires and battery post are clean and tight a bad connection will make your light come on. Also dont let your pads wear so bad that you waste the rotor I think a new rotor is about $300.00 good luck I hope this helps.

Static battery should be above 12.6 key on or off
Loaded battery should not dip below 11
Minimum charge rate is 13.25

You are dead right on the idea of checking the terminals. They are not clean or tight unless you pull them, clean them, and reinstall them yourself

still having the issue with it cutting out thinking about selling it and need to fix the issue.how could i tell if it was the rectifier or stator? would a bad battery do all this and still start?

I'm surprised no one suggested an Oxygen Sensor as the cause. You got one on each pipe right near the engine. The O2 sensor detects how well the fuel is burning. The brain box uses this info to adjust the fuel air mixture. It will not get better on it's own and eventually the way the engine runs will be affected. You should go to a dealer and have them read the codes. Good luck...
