So yesterday while cleaning the motorcycle while its raining outside I notice that the drive belt had a little nick with some thread showing on the outside of the belt. The nick DID NOT go thru to the inside of the belt but it is towards the edge of the belt.

I took a pic and sent it to my service dealer and he said he still couldn't really tell from the pic if it needs to be replaced right away so I thought I would make the 20 min drive over there since the rain stopped.

While 10 minutes into the ride, while accelerating from a stop light going into 3rd gear all the sudden, SNAP!!; my engine goes straight to idle. I pull over to the side of the road, get the bike to a parking lot to take a look at it. I quickly find out that my throttle turns back and forth but is real sloppy and it wont spring back. Turns out the "accelerator" cable snapped somewhere in the middle. The cable looks to be a little rusted.

So needless to say, it was a kind of a crappy day and of course there isn't one dealer in California that has a throttle cable in stock.

So with that said, my first question is:

1. Has anybody had their throttle cable/s break on them? There's two cables: push-pull set up.

2. I have included the pic of the DRIVE BELT where the "nick" is. Can you guys tell me if this needs to be replace immediately or at my next service interval which just happens to be another 2,500 miles cause I just had it serviced.

The bike is a 2005 Vegas with the 92c.i. motor with 12,300 miles.

let me know what you guys think of the damaged drive belt below:

Replace it now. The alternative is riding 2500 miles of worry. The fix costs the same worry or not.
On the cable side, replace both of them. If one is worn out the other isn't far behind.

I agree with Pop, replace the belt and both cables.

Barnett has a set of replacement cables, too, for our bike and gives you to option to customize. IF you go that route, might I recommend the HE (high efficiency) ones, the cable is coated in a plastic and slides inside the cable as opposed to being drug inside. Also, check out Witch Doctors for an emergency cable, if you want additional peace of mid.

Ride safe.

Call around to your local independent shops and ask if they make up their own cables. I have at least one shop here that does that. Good luck with that.
Re the belt: do it now or do it later with a lot more drama. :(
