Rough idle and surging

Hey all, first post here. I have a 2010 kingpin that I just bought, the bike came with 280 miles on it. I drained the tank of the old gas which fortunately had a ton of stabilizer in it. Changed oil, brake fluid and had new tires put on. The original plugs and battery are still in the bike however. I rode the bike for about 100 miles and it ran perfect. Yesterday I get on the bike and after about 15 minutes of riding it starts idling rough and almost dying and sometimes about halfway through the rev range the engine will lag and then suddenly surge. The bike is bone stock, only modification I have done is a drilled 6 half inch holes on the back plate of each muffler to get some more sound from the pipes as other on this forum have done. I did an IAC reset which didn’t correct the issue. I have a new battery and plugs arriving tomorrow and we’ll see if that corrects the issue. Any other suggestions as to what might be wrong. Oh also the throttle body boots are in good shape.

I knew when I got a 13 year old bike that had spent most of its life sitting that I would have issues.

What are the voltages on the battery? Off, starting, idle, 2000rpm. Check them when there's a problem.

Try some injector cleaner as well and really check the vacuum lines.

I’ve been running Lucas injector cleaner since I got the bike, I’ll check the battery voltages before and after I swap batteries today. The new battery should be here today, my trust in a 13 year old battery is pretty minimal.

Fresh spark plugs and a new battery seems to have sorted the issue out. That said I think this coming winter I’m going to go through the fuel system and then it’s done.
With only 280 miles on it, I would say that it wasnt a spark plug issue. You changed the battery, and as was pointed out, checking the voltages was a first step trouble shooting suggestion. 99.999% it was the battery that was the issue.
