This week I posted about my CCT dyno tune nip and tuck. Also that the next day, I had a small (2") puddle of oil under the shifter shaft seal. I'm not due for an oil change for another 1500 miles or so therefore I thought I'd hold off until then to replace the seal.

Today I removed the shifter arm lever from the shifter shaft and used a socket to tap the seal all the way back in. To stop the seal from coming out again I installed some aluminum crush washers between the lever and the seal. When I replace the seal at the next oil change, I may just leave those crush washers in place to prevent the new seal from coming out.

The aluminum crush washers I used were left overs from my Moto Guzzi bikes. They have an ID of 14mm , an OD of 22mm and they're 2mm thick. I think I used 5 of them to take up the room between the seal and the bracket.

Mark when replacing the seal, use red loctite on the outer rim of the seal after a thorough cleaning of the case bore with alcohol. Works pretty good on other bikes in places where seals want to pop out. Should work on a vic also.

On some bikes (Honda VTX line, for example), the shifter seal is a "safety valve" which is designed to leak if excessive pressure builds up in the crankcase due to blockage of the crankcase vent line. If that is the case for the CCT, then it might not be a good idea to prevent this seal from popping out. If this is not the case for the CCT, then nevermind :)

Well, the crankcase certainly could have built up pressure a bit on the dyno. Since that first 2" oil slick, I've only lost a single drop.That was before I installed the crush washers.

I will certainly clean the area well prior to putting in the new seal. And yes, I like the idea of a drop or two of Locktite.

They only leak when it is on the side stand. I tried to change mine last summer because the new one came in a gasket set. After screwing around with the new for several hours I put the old one back on. Works fine and easy to install.

Although I ride a Vision I've had this seal leak before... So what's the seal size and where can ya get it?

When my clutch was changed a few years back the seal leaked. The Tech tried to find a replacement from his stock but, it only leaked worse. He advised me to find one when I can and have it replaced. He then glued the seal back in and it hasn't leaked since. I've searched online and can't find the part. One thing the Tech did say was that the seal on the shift linkage was the same as on the shifter (which is what this thread's 'bout). So, if I can find that part I could use it.

Attached is a diagram of my shifting mechanism... #3 is a seal, #4 is a bearing, and #5 is a bearing. I believe #5 is what I'm lookin' for (not #3)... is that right? Is #5 a sealed bearing and not simply a seal?

What say ya who've had experience with this problem? What's the size and where can I get it?

The Polaris Victory item number is: 3610154. It's a fairly common oil seal that's sized 12mm ID x 22mm OD x 7mm Thick. I know I posted a corresponding Honda item number once as well. But these aren't expensive items to purchase and shouldn't be too hard to find.

When I replaced mine I put the old seal in front of the new seal between the new seal and the shift lever, it'll never pop out again.
