Do I have to ride one to want to own/own one? The answer is a definitive N O. I went on (from my front door and back) about a 200 mile ride with the local victory owners (polaris west in katy texas) There were a couple of visions, couple of cross roads, a kingpin, a hammer, a vegas, a triumph t-bird, a kingpin, and a v92. I was there on my 1200 sporty. I can honestly say that I have NEVER had to work so hard to keep up with the group. They were extremely good sports, watched out for me and were very patient with me.

I had myself and my wife on the sporty and for the start of the ride we were holding up extremely well I'd say. It was when we got into the twisties and the bouncies that I started having a very difficult time and having to row the bajeezus out of the transmission. When we'd hit a severe bump, we'd bounce off of the seat and have to back off and wait for the suspension to settle then I'd have to throttle the heck out of the bike to catch up.

At our first stop I was doing alright, but I was starting to feel the butt burn. We got even more into the twisties on the second leg of the ride, I was scraping pegs, fighting my suspension and just fighting like hell to keep up. We made it to the gas station and it was time to tank up, for me, by this point, the stop wasn't long enough. That h-d "touring" seat.....NOT!!!!

As we headed on to the main event restraunt, If I had the money to buy a vic, I would've traded in my bike and done whatever inappropriate prison act would have been required to have secured said cross bike. The food was awesome, my wife made some new 2 up friends and I got an earful about "why can't our bike do that" and "yeah you should get him to get a crosscountry/roads/vision" I'm sitting there realizing exactly how much of the harley davidson kool-aid I've drank in my life. but as we all know when you've drank so much, there has to be a hangover tax to be paid.

We start to head back home (I would've been happy hanging out at the restraunt for a couple more hrs while my ass stopped whining like a virgin that just got back doorered in a camaro on prom night). and there's only one word for what I was feeling.

My butt was hurting, my hands had been vibrated to numbness, my legs were cramping and I was falling behind the pack. I just didn't have the mental on enough to keep up. I'd worn myself out physically and mentally. The owner of the dealership that was hosting the event fell back behind me, keeping an eye on me to make sure we got back to the dealer safe and sound. He never left me behind and made sure that me and my spouse were safe the entire way.

I saw the sign for katy tx 9 miles and got that massive OMG we're almost there and pushed harder then I have on any other ride. To see that sign with the victory logo and the wings I was so happy to see it. We pulled in, my wife hops off like nothing had happened (curse you butty buddy) and the parts manager and dealership owner made sure that I was physically okay and alright to ride home. I didn't even have enough left to hop onto the freeway for the final 11 miles back home. I took the feeder all the way back home.

When I got the bike back into the garage, I got off the bike and wanted to kick it over. My harley davidson, my national icon, my american legend had not only let me down, had not only aggravated me, but just left me feeling empty, upset, and pissed as hell. I'm done with harley-davidson. To be a "legend" is fine. Right now I just want to be able to ride to ride in comfort, to be able to enjoy the ride, to not have to apologize for not being able to keep up, Take me home Victory, take me home.

When finances permit, I'll be in the market for a kingpin or a crosscountry. I just cannot support harley after this ride. On the 28th, I'm going for a victory demo ride. I want to see things from your handlebars. I'm sick of seeing taillights and apologizing.

Great post!

We had a young HD rider with his girlfriend in our group of Vic's on Saturday. He's coming back to the Vic shop on the Demo day too. :ltr:

Most dealers offer $1K off on demo days so be ready to make a deal.

Thanks for sharing your HD perspective. I understand the "finances permitting"' all too well. My suggestion is a 2008 Kingpin or newer. Victory made a significant improvement going to closed loop ignition in '08. They improved the transmissions in 2010 or at least changed how they machined them. Enjoy the factory ride. I did that for 15 months until finances permitted (and the $9995 purchase price came along).

dont bash HD to hard, a sporty just isn't made to do that. its a smaller lighter weight cruiser that really isn't made for 2-up riding for any real distance, my Hammer is no touring queen either, fun in town and shooting to close by towns but that's about all care to do, i leave the long trips to my KP now . a kingpin is a huge improvement over a sporty for what it sounds like you are trying to do with your motorcycling tho.

sell the sporty outright and your probably getting close to older kingpin prices with just that. the 92in. motor runs good and even with just the 5 speed model you'll be head and shoulders better trips bike than the sportster. you can ride it several years and probably not loose much when you sell it to maybe go to a cross bike or newer kp. seems like the older kp's have bottomed out in price at around $5k i dont see them devalueing any more. i could always be wrong tho.cheers and good luck with your decision.

Ride with Ratpack.

I went myself last weekend for a ride with the AzRatpack, Triumph riders. Before my CrossRoads I had a Speedmaster which is/was a good bike. Showed up for the ride, a 400 mile ride through Salt River Canyon,etc. in Arizona. I must admit I got a good workout through the canyon with the CrossRoads. My Speedmaster I would not have been sore,but I had also done a lot of modifications to it so it fit me. My Victory did very good. The more I ride it the more I am glad I got it. When my wife rode on the back,could not even tell she was there. Now on the Speedmaster, half the displacement of course I new she was on the back. Also I can carry plenty with the huge hard bags I got on the Victory. If I had the money to spare,yes I would have kept the Triumph also,but it would have been tore down and again modified,this time the engine. The Victory is a lot of bike,but also a lot of comfort. Hope your new ride comes soon for you to enjoy.thumb up

Well, I've been doing my research, (primarily chopper exchange) and I've noticed that v92's can be had for the most part under 5k. Early vegas (vegai?) and kingpins can be had for around 5.5k and up. This puts them right in my budgetary limits. I've got around 43k in debt right now. I simply don' have the money available right now to do anything other than to pay the insurance and gas on my h-d. For around town stuff, my sportie is fine so long as I keep the ride under thirty minutes. Right now it's just pushing as much money into the bills until I can get the free cash and on the plus side the more newer models come out and the more time lapses, the less espensive the used models get.

So, according to my calculations, pay off my six thousand dollar credit card bill, trade in or sell the harley to the next sap....er suck...um....harley initiate (yeah that's the ticket) and that should more or less take care of the down payment or if I happen to find a good deal, then it'll be time. Do I have buyer's remorse, yeah you could say that, but I made my bed, I'll lie in it until the time comes to make a new move. Right now, I've seen firsthand what those bikes are capable of. I WANT ONE, I WILL HAVE ONE.

Sounds like you ride a fair ways If I were you your gonna spend the cash you might as well spend it youll be alot happier on X country that way you get the best of everything a touring a bad ass bagger and a kickass cruisier. My 2 cents

Just a thought. Next ride see if they'll let you ride one of their demo bikes or used bikes so you can really get a feel for the bike you think you want. I hate to tell you but if you don't ride often butt burn will get you regardless of what bike you're mounted on. The real benefit the Victorys had over you were age, technology and supension the seats on those bike were manufactured in the same manner as your Sporty seat so they may have treated your bum the same.

I should also mention that I am very proud of the Victory riders that you rode with and really glad you gave them the credit you did. It sounds like they are a bunch of good guys. You bit about the owner also impressed me as much as he impressed you! I really like hearing about people that go out of their way to help others mostly because it doesn't happen anywhere near as often as it should.

Hopefully luck, karma, or whatever you depend on will bless you with a better job and more money so you can clear up your obligations sooner and get the bike you deserve!

Comparing your sportster to any of the bikes you mentioned that went on the ride with you is unfair. It is a sportster dude. My sister looks big on them and it is nothing more than an entry level bike. It is NOT made for riding any significant distance. With that said I am looking into the vic's myself. I think they make a good product. Right now I am between the Road Glide and the XCT.

Yeah sportys are meant more for around town. So to even try and do what you did i will give you props. My friends have them and if i was short and skinny would be great. Well since i an not i got the hard ball. Already have 1100 miles on it. Look into an older model of any x bike. Or a left over. Nothing else check ebay or Craigs list.

No doubt that sportys are intended as buzzabouts, but I HAD to try. In so far as the short and skinny....yeah.....I'm six foot, about 240lbs. My wife? 5 foot 4, and about 230. So yes, my sporty was at a disadvantage from hades. However, I thought that I would be able to at least keep up well enough to be able to handle myself. I was doing fairly well, but the load was just too much. I did have a lot of fun on the ride, the only thing is that given my ride, I won't be doing it again until the upgrade goes through. Budget says kingpin, heart (and wife) are saying crosscountry. Time will tell when things get back into perspective. The people I rode with were second to none, the victories that I saw were just gorgeous (I'm still surprised that victories don't look that well in photos). It's just the distance for my bike and the type of riding is just too much for the bike.

Admittedly, I brought a knife to a gunfight. But, I was never once told to hurry up, get a move on, or go home. The group I was with, took care of me as if I were one of their own. The restraunt we went to, mostly harleys. I was acknowledged with nods, waves, and various other greetings. The victory riders were more or less looked down on. I may enjoy the harley's looks, but I'll stick with the victory crowd. I seem to fit in better with the crowd of riders that I was with.

Glad you had a good time young bro. We were looked down on at the Chill??? Never noticed, maybe it was just envy???? As far as the rides, your always welcome.

I haven't had the opportunity to ride a Hammer or Vegas yet. Rode a Kingpin and it rode nice alright. I really like the lines of the Vegas and Hammer. Buddy of mine had a stock Hammer for a while and hated how it handled. Another buddy was in the same position with his Hammer until he got a new rear tire...says it's an entirely new bike now and handles like it should. :)

i don't have a Victory, but ride with many who do. If you're on two wheels, you're good with me. :)

Honest to God, my Kingpin is more comfortable than my '06 Road King ever was, and it even had the "cushy" touring seat.
My Vic solo is the first ever stock seat that I have not had any interest or need to run out and replace it with an aftermarket unit to make rides longer than a couple of hours bearable.
I still fail to see what all the talk was about HD touring bikes and their air-ride suspension. I tweaked mine several times, and never found a happy place.
I think that's what most of the HD stuff is... just "talk".

LOL, love the initial post ! Talk about painting a good picture. You should be a writer ! I too am a recent Harley convert. I had an 06, and then an 07 Wide Glide. Both were good bike, and served their purpose, but when I was looking again I wanted something different. I found my 09 KP as a left over model, and got 4k dollars knocked off of the sticker, and rode it home. best, absolute best bike I have ever ridden. Any hard core HD guy who hasn't ridden a Victory yet, hasn't because they're scared that they will see how blind they've been !! Good luck, and best wishes to the o.p. until you can get on the bike of your choice. And take some advice from a guy who just never bought the right bike..... Buy what you really love, and don't settle. Or, it'll end up costing you more in the long run.

Awesome post. I came over from a VTX 1300R to a 2011 Cross Roads just before a 4 day, 2000+ mile ride up through AK from CenTX and have to say I am really, really glad I made the switch before the trip. The VTX would have kept up just fine, but the butt burn is almost unbearable after an hour with the stock seat.

If you're going back and forth between the Cross Country and the Kingpin, maybe look at the Cross Roads. It's the same bike as the Cross Country without the fairing so it has more of a cruiser look with all of the handling and comfort of the touring. I absolutely love it. Though, admittedly, once this one's paid off I may get myself a Vegas or other, smaller bike for running around town. The Crosses are a lot of bike.

I love Sportsters, I rode a '73 XLCH for 18 years. Not a great bike for two up riding, but mine went to 49 states and 4 Canadian provinces. It's not a big cushy geezer glide, but don't think for a second you can't do a full day in the saddle.

Not a fair assessment, 1200 Sportster to a 1731 which weighs 300 pounds more. Look how much longer Harley has been around with that Sportster. Look at how all the other companies have tried to IMITATE . So yes it is a old school type of bike made for a certain type of ride. But it is not fair to compare apples to oranges when you have most of these guys on this forum that only owned FOREIGN bikes before they bought their Victory.

Agreed. That'll happen every time when you bring a knife to a gun fight. Sportsters are good bikes, but when you have it loaded down with 500# of riders.... Not so much.
