What does the speed sensor pick-up to measure speed, the teeth on the width of the sprocket? Or is there something on the inside of the sprocket that triggers the sensor?
Having an intermittent speedometer issue, new updated sensor installed, battery and regulator wires cleaned.
Kinda wished I'd have pulled the belt and cleaned the front sprocket area. Maybe there is some grease or rubber interfering.
I plan on cleaning the key switch connections and continuing to check wires. May have to go back to to belt-sprocket if that fails to do it.
It is a 2003 V92C 10k, new battery, updated speedometer W/green turn signals.

Is it dropping to zero? Is it flying up? How long does the intermittent issue last? I assume the rest of the unit (digital readout etc) is working ok?

Went to the gas station for a fill up/spring test drive, took city streets there about 5 miles 35mph - 55mph. Then upon entering the freeway on the back trip (4.5miles) noticed the speedo at 0mph still when entering at about 55mph, came back up eventually after not quite a mile.

It was ordered for my bike so would expect the right one but I will try to find the original bag/receipt. good idea!

anyone have help on the original question about what part of the front pulley triggers the sensor.

I cannot find that information even in the service manual. That being said, it doesn't sound at all like a bad sensor or however it reads that. If it were a magnet, it would be constant or very erratic if it were say, dirty. If it was somehow counting the teeth on the sprocket, again, it would be either all or nothing.

I would start checking for damaged wiring or connectors IMHO

The replaced speed sensor is a Polaris # 4011111

I have not found any wiring problems yet, but haven't spent that much time on her because of illness. still trying to get the ignition switch connectors apart yet for cleaning-inspection.

Thats really the only worry with owning and riding a modern, fuel injected, computerised machine...
Electrical gremlins.... A lot to be said for points, coils, carburetors, and good ol fashioned Speedo cables.
At least we could maintain and fix em.
Good luck with finding a remedy, at least in this day and age we have forums for information/misinformation.
My Honda 750/4 bobber had no speedo, rode it for years, before the speed cops got hungry and radars and cameras but.
Gotta take the bad with the good I guess.
Luck comes into it töo with electrics, but if my bike stops and its not out of fuel or a bad battery. Then Im pushing.

Thanks, but was hoping for something a little more specific. is there a magnet or piece of steel in the aluminum sprocket that triggers a pulse in the sensor??...or?
If it was the teeth on the pulley, then you would never be able to change tooth count, but some have. Also, I don't believe I've ever heard of aluminum triggering a pulse, but not all that worldly (or smart)

I don't know exactly what you have but would like to contribute something to possibly help you in your troubleshooting.

Magnetism is also associated with an electron field. It's partly how we get our electricity generated.

While aluminum is not magnetic it does conduct electricity. Aluminum also has a peculiar property in that magnetism(the electron part) does have an effect but only when it's moving. That's how the Hall Effect sensors can detect the teeth of an aluminum wheel moving through a magnetic field and generate a pulse.

Here are examples to show you that aluminum in fact can have an effect on the electron and therefore the magnetism used by the Hall Effect sensor.
