Well figured I report up how the new Triumph Speed Twin is doing for me. Personally I think it is a good looking bike, maybe I should have got the silver one,ha,ha. My camera on my phone does not do the paint any good. I actually like the red color or what ever Triumph calls it. Went to the dealer today and got the plates. So I had to look around some. Picked up a cruise control or throttle lock for it. Yes I miss the electronic cruise on the Victorys. Tried to get a service manual for it,no they do not offer one supposedly yet. Also no Haynes manual so far they told me. I will have to research a little for a manual. So when I was younger man I would have put the first 500 miles on the bike the first weekend, did not happen this time. Just now close to the 500 miles so later this coming week I get to take it in for its first service which is suppose to be done at 500 miles. Now get this the wrench on the dash is suppose to come on at 500 miles telling you it needs serviced, that is fine and dandy, but get this you have to use the Triumph service tool(computer-service tool) in order to shut off the service light(wrench). To me there ought to be a way to reset the wrench or shut it off, just like in a car when you service it yourself. So Triumphs reasoning is it only needs to be serviced every 10,000 miles. Yes 10,000 miles, so just bring it in to Triumph to change the oil. My problem is I do not like letting other people change my oil on my vehicles & or service them. They also recommend a 10w-50 Castro motorcycle engine oil. So after I get it serviced the first time by the Triumph dealer just like they like for warranty then the next oil changes will hopefully be done at my house by myself.
So back to the bike itself. The bike handles great, brakes are dual disc Brembos, brakes work great, good power, lots of torque. Engine is rated at 96-hp, but mods will begin once I get some money again to play with a bit. As I said the bike handles great, but it does ride very stiff even on the lightest setting for the shocks. I put some small saddle bags on it and had maybe 20 pounds of stuff in them, the bags having weight in them made the bike ride much better. So I guess I could gain 20 pounds or down the road buy some better shocks. With my short legs when I do get new shocks they will be one inch shorter. The seat feels like it looks, it is hard and the edges are square, so yes if the seat does not break in better it may get a different seat. My wife no longer rides with me(back issues) so I do not need a bike for a passenger anymore, this new bike is so much lighter, easier to handle and just ride I believe I am going to really enjoy it. Oh yes the engine is very smooth and the trans is a six speed and shifts very easy and smoothly. Now so far on the gas mileage it has been getting 46-47 mpg and then I filled up today and got 50 mpg. So as it is breaking in it is getting better on gas, hopefully it gets better mpg at a steady cruise on a trip I hope. So no bike is perfect and it seems a new bike is a new project. The fun begins again. Hopefully this was a good report.

Sounds like a winner, glad you're happy. You have any mods in mind?

I use Castrol Power 1 in mine, Triumph and Castrol are partners. They stopped the partnership with Mobil 1.
Castrol isn't stupid expensive and must be good if they recommend 10,000 mile services. My Rocket is also 10,000.

You have a great bike that you'll enjoy for many years.

Broken in finally

Well back again about the Triumph Speedtwin. Yes Bbob I will try and break it up with some paragraphs. Never did very well in English at school. So here we go. Took it on a three day ride up north and ran the Route66 from Winslow,Az to Laughlin, Nv. Good trip to me. Round trip it was 729 miles from my house in Buckeye. Bike has over 1000 miles on it now, so according to their mileage chart it is ok to take it up to redline.
So first thing of I missed compared to the XR was the luggage capacity of course, which I new I would. I had mounted some small Triumph bags on it that I picked up used. I do like the look, but they do not hold much, which I new. So just like when I was tad younger I had strapped tank bag on,and backpack across the back seat along with a couple of other bags. I kind of had fun with this, looked like an old horse loaded up.
The next thing I badly missed and I knew would was a windshield. Yes I should have bought one before the trip, but I had already over spent my budget this past month with buying the new bike. My neck muscles are much stronger now after this trip. Got up north and going west we were fighting a head wind from the south southwest. Small bikes blow around a bit easier,ha,ha.
Gas mileage, so I know some do not care, but I even figured it most the time with my XR. I guess it is my inner penny pincher coming out. So the worst I did on one fill up was an average of 38 mpg. The best fill up was 56 mpg! So I was actually happy with the gas mileage. Oh and the operators manual recommends 87 octane, which is even better. Bike runs good on regular.
So riding along you get to think about things and little things you want to change come out on a trip. My list of future mods: Seat, maybe a gel insert which I can do. Rear shocks, I weigh about 180 to 185-lbs, and the shocks on the lightest setting are still to stiff even loaded with luggage. So when the money flows a little better a seat mod and then maybe new Hagon rear shocks. I know the bike is set up to be sporty, but my flat ass and old back do not appreciate the very stiff rear end. So time may change things up a bit.
Performance mods: I have read that a few different companies offer a pipe that does away with the cat under the engine. The pipe is sort of like an x-pipe and fits in place of the stock cat without any mods. Triumph puts the O2 sensors up by the head on the exhaust header so they say you do not need a fuel programmer(ok-maybe). Benefits of this are suppose to be better performance, loss of weight of the bike, and it is suppose to make the stock mufflers sound much better without being to loud. Now the only trouble to the mods is going to be the loss of green out of my pockets. So let the mods begin......again.
I say no bike is perfect and every bike I have had ends up getting tweaked some way or another. So time will tell what I do with it. I will try to post up pictures if people want.
So got me thinking on this trip also maybe I should see about some of the Victory stuff I have. Got to look through it and maybe see if anybody would be interested in it. An example is that Penske shock, it needs a reseal kit put in it, but I have a total of three springs with three different spring rates for it. The oil does leak out of the seal around the rod though.
Hopefully my writing skills were better this time.

They put very smart ECU's in these bikes, take advantage of it.

Thanks Vindex. Also I did try separating the paragraphs by moving the first word of the paragraph over like on an old type writer. Computer moved it all back to the left. I guess I will try putting a space between the paragraphs next time. Oh yes washed the bike for the first time since I had it, looks much nicer.

Lets test this paragraph thing, ought to work I hope.

SO life happens I bought the bike, had paid off some bills, etc. So this week my wife ended up with an abscessed tooth. She went to the dentist today. Looks like a root-canal again for her. Very painful. Looks like another four grande on the old credit card. The dental insurance she has will not pay on a root-canal. She is going to change insurance again. Fill bad for her I have been through it a few times.

So back to work next week to pay for everything. Thankfully I do have a credit card we can put the dental bills on.

ouch painful for the wife and painful for the pocketbook....man 4 grand ouch...

Yes painful for both of us. She will not go to Mexico for dental work. I know lots of people that go down there. There are good dentist down there and much more affordable.

wow really just had one of the guys that rides in the southern cruisers with me up here in Canada...just permanently move to Mexico...partially for love but partially for the price of housing and the medical care there...he says it's all free provided you take permanent residence prior to turning 72 and the care is excellent....although I have been to Cancun many times I had no idea of the level of their medical care...interesting....

SORRY but WTH 4 grand for a root canal? You need a different oral surgeon/dentists. Heck you can drive (or fly) to Dallas and go to Baylor Dental College where year 3 dental students with oral surgeons and dentists perform the surgery...literally its like $500!

Yeah, that price is at least 4X what it costs almost anywhere else.
